Raoul Walsh (1887–1980) was known as one of Hollywood's most adventurous, iconoclastic, and creative directors. He carved out an illustrious career and made films that transformed the Hollywood studio yarn into a thrilling art form. Walsh belonged to that early generation of directors―along with John Ford and Howard Hawks―who worked in the fledgling film industry of the early twentieth century, learning to make movies with shoestring budgets. Walsh's generation invented a Hollywood that made movies seem bigger than life itself.

In the first ever full-length biography of Raoul Walsh, author Marilyn Ann Moss recounts Walsh's life and achievements in a career that spanned more than half a century and produced upwards of two hundred films, many of them cinema classics. Walsh originally entered the movie business as an actor, playing the role of John Wilkes Booth in D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation (1915). In the same year, under Griffith's tutelage, Walsh began to direct on his own. Soon he left Griffith's company for Fox Pictures, where he stayed for more than twenty years. It was later, at Warner Bros., that he began his golden period of filmmaking.

Walsh was known for his romantic flair and playful persona. Involved in a freak auto accident in 1928, Walsh lost his right eye and began wearing an eye patch, which earned him the suitably dashing moniker "the one-eyed bandit." During his long and illustrious career, he directed such heavyweights as Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Errol Flynn, and Marlene Dietrich, and in 1930 he discovered future star John Wayne.

Fascinating, In-Depth Bio of a Golden Age Director

I first became fascinated with Walsh before I knew his name. My favorite moments from childhood were connected with watching his films. Be it HIGH SIERRA or THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON, Walsh's bravado and daring always managed to come through his action and the actors who portrayed his characters.
One of the popular by-products of 1970's era television was a series called THE MEN WHO MADE THE MOVIES. One of the segements that made a huge impression on me was Richard Schickel's interview with Walsh and the accompanying review of his career. It was a mesmerizing moment when I saw this feisty old man talk about some of my favorite movies and his approach to film making which was focused less on the cerebral and more on telling a compelling story that aimed to be exciting.
Author Moss has done a magnificent job of researching Walsh and committing his life and art to paper. If his marriages, sort of hard-living ways and his personal and professional relationships with his actors weren't as interesting as they were, his movies alone would be enough to hook this reader. For all the artsy commentaries that film directors are known for today, coming in contact with the rough-and-tumble Walsh even in book form is a treat. Walsh and so many of his contemporaries made it up as they went along and laid the foundation for great storytelling on many scales. Walsh has been dead for 31 years or so and is buried under an unassuming marker in the Simi Valley. It's great to know that he has not been overlooked or forgotten.

Biography at its very best

I have always loved Raoul Walsh's movies ... "High Sierra," "White Heat," "They Died with Their Boots On," "The Roaring Twenties!" I've loved them since I was a kid. And I've always wondered about the personal side of this director. Well, finally I know about him from reading Moss' book. This biography does a super job of telling us all who Raoul Walsh was when he was away from the camera. He was a great teller of tales, especially the ones he told about himself. Moss does a great job telling the reader about every aspect of Walsh's life -- his marriages, his relationship with his actors and actresses, and how important his movies still are in American cinema.

This is biography at its very best. Moss digs in and comes up with a vivid portrait of Walsh. He's right there on the page -- on every page of this book. She has researched her subject extremely well! If you finally want to know who Walsh REALLY was, look no further than this fascinating biography of this fascinating man!

Behind the Camera, behind the lights

The films of Raoul Walsh have always stuck out in my mind as exceptional. His 'classics' such as "Gentleman Jim", "Robin Hood", "High Sierra", "They Drive By Night", "Roaring Twenties", and "Dark Command" are memorable. I have seen these, but came on the film scene in the early 80's and discovered a cinematic trove on late night TV.

I was very surprised to find out that Mr Walsh was behind the camera for over 150 films from 1915 to 1976! That is amazing, and speaks to a work ethic not often seen today. That also speaks to a different time, when directors, not only actors were placed under contract for multiples of years. However, whatever the reason, Raoul Walsh was a force to reckon with. His overwhelming view of any production, and ability to get the best out of any actor was well known. His friends, who were difficult for others, like Mr Flynn, Bogart, and Barrymore, knew him and worked with him.

The resulting body of work is only part of the story. Behind the camera, he was a complex man who, during his creative peak, was untouchable. Just like John Ford, and Howard Hawks, they had their say, and their way. But then, the industry was different. He was a compulsive gambler. He was very organized, and intelligent. He loved his family, but remained aloof and disconnected from his children. Film was his world, people sometimes got in the way. His wives, all three of them, put up with a certain amount of avoidance while he gambled and traveled. He was restless, yet longed for companionship, which he attained with his friends.

I love the intimate look at Raoul Walsh, with rare insights gleaned from a variety of first person sources and photos rarely seen. The filmography is welcome and will soon grace my 'must buy' list.

Once you understand the man behind, the influences that made him the director he became, you can appreciate themes and shadows in all of his work.

Highly recommended and another winner by Marilyn Ann Moss.

Perfect book for learning MicroStrategy BI on a Kindle

The author leads the reader through a series of bona-fide workshops that will give you a strong understanding of the sophisticated and robust data warehouse/business intelligence environment of MicroStrategy. If you have already used MicroStrategy tools, the labs can fill out your knowledge set. Either way, the Kindle and this book together are the perfect application for investing your time in the labs - and you SHOULD go through all the labs - because you not only can read through the directions on the Kindle, you can EASILY navigate to the URI links provided in the book without losing your train of thought in your extant lab. Either way: go through the book, and the author will have opened a door of BI knowledge that is difficult to penetrate: the MicroStrategy BI environment.

About the Author
Timothy Masters received a PhD in mathematical statistics with a specialization in numerical computing. Since then he has continuously worked as an independent consultant for government and industry. His early research involved automated feature detection in high-altitude photographs while he developed applications for flood and drought prediction, detection of hidden missile silos, and identification of threatening military vehicles. Later he worked with medical researchers in the development of computer algorithms for distinguishing between benign and malignant cells in needle biopsies. For the last twenty years he has focused primarily on methods for evaluating automated financial market trading systems. Poor Self-Publishing Effort -- Many Better Resources Available

I really wanted to like these books but the quality is just too low. TM thinks that just b/c some C++ code is included that the writing doesn't matter. The explanations of core concepts are terrible. There are many typos and confusing sentences and even whole paragraphs that just don't make sense. Much of the content for the other two books just copies content word for word from each other. There is very little in the other two volumes. Literally, whole sections are copied and pasted into Vol 2 and Vol 3. There a very few diagrams of anything and the diagrams and graphs that are included are of such low quality as to not be useful. I really want to support self publishing but these books are basically C++ code documentation. With all the DNN frameworks available such as Caffe, Torch, Theano, TensorFlow, CNTK there really isn't much point in studying this guys C++ code. Not to mention there is cuDNN with many of these core operations implemented.

There are many good resources on the internet that are of much higher quality. Checkout Michael Nielsen's free on-line book, also deep learning dot net has many good resources. Additionally NVIDIA offers self-study course for deep learning (just google) and also their deep learning institute (again just google).

Deep Belief (Learning) Networks Are An Important Advance in Machine Learning

First, I must disclose that I have known Dr. Masters for 20 years and have collaborated with him on various projects including a book we co-authored.(Statistically Sound Machine Learning for Algorithmic Trading of Financial Instruments). In addition he was a crucial adviser on my book Evidence Based Technical Analysis. He is also a friend.

With that said, Dr. Masters is a person of integrity, humility, intellectual honesty and competence. When he became interested in Deep Belief Networks, also known as Deep Learning Nets, I took that as a signal that this was a truly important development in the field of machine learning and I’d better get my admittedly slow human intellect exposed to DBNs.

Amazon allows you to look inside the book so I won't reiterate the table of contents or outline what the book contains. Interested readers can do that themselves.

The key point for interested readers is this: deep belief networks represent an important advance in machine learning due to their ability to autonomously synthesize features. Feature engineering, the creating of candidate variables from raw data, is the key bottleneck in the application of machine learning to any field. If feature engineering is done well, even a relatively weak model, such a multiple linear regression can produce a useful predictive model. If done poorly, even the most powerful machine learning methods will fail. Thus feature engineering is the "without-which-not" of success. Of particular importance is that the feature engineering conducted by a DBN is performed in an unsupervised fashion ( no reference to the target variable). Thus if it takes a DBN numerous layers to self-organize the critical problem features, there is no risk of over-fitting was would occur if the target variable were to be considered during this phase of model training. The target variable is only considered by a DBN after feature engineering is complete. Of course this threatens the key role currently played by "domain experts" upon whom the feature engineering task currently falls. These people may find themselves on the same unemployment line as truck-drivers put out of work by self-driving 18 wheelers, and tax advisors whose job has been usurped by IBM’s Watson computer.

What this book does is bring you up to speed in this very exciting area of machine learning. Background material is written in an intuitive fashion that allows the non-expert reader to grasp the big ideas. But then there is in depth discussion of theory, application and actual code for the expert.

This book is absolutely amazing. There are people that use prebuilt machine learning libraries and then there are those that actually make those libraries. As a result from studying this book my machine learning models have not only dramatically improved in accuracy but they have dramatically improved in execution speed as well. This is an absolute must have for any machine learning / artificial intelligence practitioner.

So good I had to finish the last book before writing a review.

Definitely better than Promise of Blood and a great action packed free-for-all.

***“One man always makes a difference. Sometimes it’s a small one. Other times, he tips a war.”***

I’m not huge on loving military campaigns and since this had 2 character PoVs with military type campaigns I should have been totally bored with this story and yet I wasn’t.

Tamas is behind enemy lines cut off from the world and thought dead trying to get his smaller portion of the army back home to meet up with the main body. He is totally outnumbered by the Kez and in completely hostile territory but he shows us every step of the way why he is such a great military leader and how he became the man he is today.

***“Let the Kez come,” Tamas roared. “Let them send their greatest generals after us. Let them stack the odds against us. Let them come upon us with all their fury, because these hounds at our heels will soon know we are lions!”***

Taniel on the other hand has just recovered from the coma he suffered at the end of Promise of Blood and with KaPole’s help they are off to kill a god. If only they can find him and figure out how to kill him. I will say the KaPole is really a fun and amazing character. Sure her magic is still pretty mysterious to me and I want to know more about how it works. But while we get some hints there is always an air of mystery to it. I’m not sure how I feel about the burgeoning relationship between her and Taniel. I like Vlora and have this semi-hope that they work things out. But I’m torn since I really like KaPole too and whatever magic she has wrapped Taniel up in seems to be changing him into something….more.

The final PoV was Adamat’s. He is trying to find where his family is being held and rescue them. He decides that he will need some major help if he is going to be able to save them. Bo seems like just the thing since he is one of the only privileged in the city.

“You call torturing a man ‘festivities’?” Adamat asked.
“I’m not a good person,” Bo said.”***

Bo might not be a good person but he is definitely one of my favorite people in this series. His wry humor and interesting flexible morality just does something for me. He isn’t a good man but if he is your friend he is the BEST man. He and Adamat as a team go very well together.

I really enjoy the blend of the war with the politics and a few of the Gods just wandering around. Adam reborn is probably one of my favorite gods in a book. I loved his approach to trying to help and yet not trying to be too involved or overly godly.

***“God' is a funny word, it implies omnipotence and omniscience. Let me assure, I am neither.”***

Overall, I found the pacing in this book to be better than the last and the coherence of the overall story seemed to be better than in Promise of Blood.

This has been a really good fantasy series thus far and I was so excited to carry on with the series that I finished the last book before every writing this review. So I can say that it carries on in a great way and finishes spectacularly

fast-paced and the writing has improved compared to book 1

You'll want to start this series with volume one, Promise of Blood. There's a fair amount explained about the magic system, religions, countries and governments, and other aspects of worldbuilding there. And without that background, there's a lot about this book that won't make sense -- the author avoids repetition here, and I love that. This way, more time is spent on the story, on action. (Key character relationships were also developed in the previous book and that information remains important here, as well.) If you haven't read the first book, the level of technology here is pretty standard for fantasy, with the exception that gunpowder is known and used (generally single-shot weapons, however).

We have the same POV characters in this book as we did previously, with one addition towards the end. Field Marshal Tamas is attempting to defend a city from an invading army. Something goes horribly wrong with that early in the book and he's forced to change his plans. Tamas's son Taniel is recovering from severe injury suffered at the end of book one and is reluctant to get back to his duties (though he does eventually join the war effort). Former Inspector Adamat is focused on his family, but his quest to rescue his wife and children is tied into events at large. We also have some scenes from Nila, the former laundress, and at the end of the book, we are finally rewarded with hints of information about why she is important. And the Privileged sorcerer Bo (Taniel's best friend) is the new POV, mostly interacting with Adamat and Nila.

Tamas, Taniel, and Adamat are the best-developed of the characters, although I'm pleased at some of the complexity we see in Bo in this book and hope that trend continues. I'm hoping Nila develops some of this complexity in the next book (which thankfully is due out pretty soon). I really hadn't been all that invested in Nila before, but I think she will prove much more interesting in book 3. Also, I have to say that I really want to know more about Taniel's companion Ka-poel. She has some amazing powers but I'm still not sure why she's so attached to Taniel. (Thankfully, her amazing powers require some effort to set up and she can't solve every problem she encounters.)

For what it's worth, Adamat, Bo, and Nila are largely in the city of Adopest for the majority of the book. An election is about to be held and there's a lot of political maneuvering that they get swept up in (and that relates to their personal problems). Taniel and Tamas are both in a lot of battles, but on different fronts.

Because the main characters are, by and large, separate from one another, it's interesting to see what sorts of things they are motivated to do, acting on old news. There is NOT an instantaneous method of movement or communication in this book and I rather enjoyed reading about the complications that caused. Different characters think other characters are dead, injured, missing, etc.

In the last book, Tamas wanted Adamat to root out a trader on the council of people who overthrew the king. In this book, Taniel suspects there are traitors in the military and he is severely hampered in his efforts to root them out. Complicating matters is the fact that a character he thought he killed in book one is not dead, though Taniel's magical shot has made the character go insane, which causes problems for people on both sides of the battle. I appreciate the incorporation of the idea of unintended consequences/unforeseen results. Taniel took the best action he could in book one, based on what he knew. Then he had to deal with the results of his action in book two. (He will have to finish the job in book three.)

Family relationships were important in book one and they are again in this book. I like the relationship between Taniel and Tamas. They clearly care about one another as father and son, but they also don't get along sometimes. And Adamat has to make an absolutely heartbreaking decision regarding his own family. I didn't see it coming. But you really feel for him and his wife (and the author gives them an "out" at the end of this book).

I think the writing has improved over book one. A lot of the early parts of book one were choppy, as if an overenthusiastic editor cut out quite a few sentences. I didn't notice that here. So that's good.

There's a fair amount of violence and gore in this book, some adult language, and sexual situations (but nothing explicit). Still, probably suitable for mature teens on up (all of the main characters seem to be in their 20s or older, for the most part).

If I had one criticism, it's that Tamas's besieged army has an awful lot of success considering their lack of resources. On the other hand, people in desperate situations can be motivated quite a bit by fear of something even worse. And tempers fray appropriately as the situation gets worse. Overall, I enjoyed this book and am definitely looking forward to the next one. Glad I don't have to wait too long!

Promise of Blood, the first book in the Powder Mage trilogy was one of my favorite books of last year so I was anxious to read the sequel. And once I started reading, I was hooked and couldn't stop till I finished it. Crimson Campaign was a non-stop adrenaline rush of action. Tamas, Taniel and Adamat also face dire challenges, from the Kez attacking to more diabolical plots within the city. The god Kesimir is back, and apparently on the side of Kez. But you can't count out the Chef. Secres of the past are revealed, as well as revelations of the present. This is a well-written fantasy, with an intriguing setting and cool magic systems. I highly recommend this book, as well as the first one. And once you read this book, you will be eager for the next book.

Not Good

The CONTENT of this book is very good for an introductory level text, and is covered somewhat adequately. However, the book is horribly written, edited, and organized, making it ultimately more frustrating and worthless than useful. The reader who pays even the slightest bit of attention will notice, on average, a very glaring typo on just about every single page (perhaps a slight exaggeration). Some pages have none, some pages have 3 or 4 obvious ones. Not always just little mistakes, either - sometimes very, very serious mistakes that one wonders how anyone could have possibly typed. For someone not already familiar with the material, these blatant, and often times just plain stupid errors detract from any educational value that can be hoped for. As a college/graduate level textbook it also fails. It has no problems and no examples to illustrate any of the concepts beyond the mere fundamental aspects or statements.

How this book was released with such a poor editing job is beyond me. Any student who might make the amount of errors in a class that are contained in this book would surely fail. Find a better book and buy that one. Unfortunately I can't recommend a better one, I can only honestly comment on how poorly done this one is.

Note: If later volumes are ever released (and perhaps they have been; this is a review of the first volume)then I hope that the errors have been fixed, and perhaps some examples and problems added. If this is done, then this could become a very GOOD book.

It provides a good picture of the meaning of these fundamental recent discoveries

The book provides a bridge from undergraduate and classical math and physics courses to more recent research at a beginning graduate school level. It provides a good picture of the meaning of these fundamental recent discoveries. The book contains several diagrams. I especially like Tabor's intuitive description of the Kolmogorov-Arnorld-Moser (KAM) theorem. The book was published in 1989 but I think this covers the most recent knowledge, although I read math for pleasure so I don't keep up on all research. At the heart of this is some serious and difficult questions about the stability and precision of solutions to the famous n-body problem, which includes our planetary system. Those questions stretch back to Weierstrass and have perplexed mankind where these are the deepest answers so far.

This is a very good book. Has a lot of relevant stuffs covered and it's at least light years ahead of similar books in terms of digestibility. Tightly-written yet not patronisingly simple. Check it out.

The Anti-Socialism Anti-Revisionism of Martin Malia

Two theories--totalitarianism and revisionism--have emerged in Sovietology, attempting to define what comprises the correct application of socialism, and the particular aspects of Soviet socialism. Martin Malia, in his text The Soviet Tragedy-A History of Socialism in Russia, 1917-1991, contends that the Soviet regime was logically totalitarian because totalitarianism is the natural outcome of any attempt to realize textbook Marxism. Stalinism thus represented the peak of the Soviet experiment. Malia argues that later regimes were merely watered-down versions of either Stalin's "hard" war communism or "soft" NEP-style market reforms of the 1920's. He focuses the argument on socialism's inherent flaws. Malia therefore opposes various revisionist claims that Russia, her leaders, and their faulty interpretations of Marxism led to the demise of Soviet socialism. These revisionist arguments imply that under different circumstances full integral socialism could have worked. Malia organizes his book around the major trends of the Soviet experience, while consistently attacking each revisionist claim. He clarifies points, separates utopianism from sober reality, and examines the political and economic costs of socialist policies. Because revisionism views the Marxist ideal sympathetically, Malia's anti-socialism arguments are essentially anti-revisionist.

Would not buy again.

His website here: [...] already has most of the useful information from this book. It's sort of like watching the trailer to a movie that has a lot of good parts, but you know it's a trailer, so you get real excited. But when you watch the movie, you realize all the good parts were already in the trailer. Very disappointing.

A true treasure

In this little manual Higgens has given us a real treasure. But you have to know what you're looking at to really appreciate it. If you are a beginner this is not a "how to" manual for how to become a great illustrator. This is as described "an honest account of the substance of his teaching" referring to Frank Reilly as he taught "picture making" at the Art Student's League. Inside this slim volume you will find the nuggets of knowledge that are "truths" in the art of realistic portrait and figure drawing and painting. What is in here is all you need if you have the fortitude to digest it. It is presented as fragments, like class notes, so there is no flowery text or background, no personal anecdotes, no opinion. This is the School of Frank J. Reilly, right here.

If you are serious about drawing and painting you must grasp everything in this book.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK

Doug Higgins has published his notes taken from his days as one of Frank Reilly's students. He has not made any effort to present this information in a clear and concise manner. In fact some passages (a lot of passages!!) are completely baffling and make no sense what so ever! Honestly, it beggars belief!!

I can only assume that he (looking back over these notes) does not understand them either otherwise I'm sure he would have attempted to explain the various concepts he try's to put forward.

Advanced students may be able to take something from these notes (possibly) but I'm certain that the majority of artists out there will be angry and disappointed to find that they parted with good money for this excuse of a book.
