Excellent book in the field of dermatopathology
By A. F. SHERIF
I usually prefer the book that had been written by one expert author over than that multi-author ones. This book is divided into 30 chapters. The first one is the most fruitful one. It illustrates 150 diffenetial diagnoses. The headings of these differentails are sorted alphebatically. They include histopathologic parameters such as spongiosis, papillomatosis, acantholysis, ... etc; and also include clinical findings like comedones, painful lesions, ... etc. The author considered that the approach for accurate diagnosis have to be guided, in certain situations, by the clinical information from the start rather that a certain histopathologic parameter, so that the pathologist should be aware about some clinical differentials.

The author explained the meaning of each heading in this chapter. "What is the meaning of spongiosis ?" before mention the possible differential diagnosis. Not only the meaning is given but also the differences between that finding and similar looking ones are justified. The differences between spongiosis and acantholysis are demonstrated before mentioning the diagnositc possibilities of spongiosis.

Each one of the diagnostic possibilites is written with a reference to its location within this book chapters. For example, within the list of differential of spongiosis I found "Pityriasis rosea (2.4)". (2.4) means I can find the details of such disease within chapter 2, heading 4.
The details of pathogenesis, complications, and treatment as well as normal skin histology are not included in this book, the author said that "the reader can readily find this information in some of the major
textbooks listed at the end of this book".

The illustrations are very technically excellent and expressive.
The other book chapters are named as any textbook "Malanocytic neoplasms, Subepidermal vesicular disease, Vasculitis, ...". The details are concise and easy to read.

The included CD contains all the images within the book for their use in electronic presentations.

This book makes the way to be a good dermatopathologist easier.

Go to Derm-path book
By Deron E. Arnold
This is the first derm book I go to when I have a challenging rash. In the inside front cover I have a copy of Ackerman's algorithms which I also frequently use.

The best thing about this book is it's practicality. You see a feature on the glass slide (e.g. neutrophilic spongiosis) and then you go to the first chapter which lists all the conditions associated with neutrophilic spongiosis. Each entry in this list is indexed to a discussion of the disease elsewhere in the book (see below). These features are extremely easy to find and are well-organized. It acts almost like a specialized table of contents/index.

After the first chapter, the book is divided into a fairly standard pattern of organization. Each disease entity reveals short, pithy entries about a surprising number of diseases. From the thin size of the book, I wasn't expecting too much breadth here...but I was pleasantly surprised.

Another feature I find helpful is that throughout the book, there are references to other parts of the book. For example, in the entry on psoriasis, the differential diagnosis not only lists the various histologic look-alikes, but also gives an exact location in the book where that disaease process is discussed. And, as always, the entries are very easy to find.

As expected there is not a lot of depth. For further histologic information, I would recommend Weedon. For further clinical information, I use Bolognia. If you want both in the same book, I would recommend McKee. (I have all three as well as the Rapini book.)

I am a general pathologist with no formal sub-specialty training who has been practicing 5 years in the "real world". I see mainly skin, GI, and GYN in my practice along with breast and prostate. I use Rapini about 2 times a week. I only use it for the dermatitides...not tumors. It's not that its coverage of tumors is necessarily poor...I just haven't used it for that yet. Also, I haven't used the CD-Rom.

Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five, by Penelope Leach

This newest edition of Penelope Leach’s much-loved, trusted, and comprehensive classic—an international best seller for twenty-five years, with nearly two million copies sold in America alone—encompasses the latest research and thinking on child development and learning, and reflects the realities of today’s changing lifestyles.

In her authoritative and practical style, Leach responds fully to parents’ every concern about the psychological, emotional, and physical well-being of their children. She describes, in easy-to-follow stages from birth through starting school, how children develop: what they are doing, experiencing, and feeling. And she tackles both the questions parents often ask—What does a new baby’s wakefulness or a toddler’s tantrum mean?—and those that are more difficult: How should new parents time their return to work, choose day care, tell a child about a new baby or an impending divorce?

Whatever the concern or question, Your Baby and Child supplies the information, encouragement, and reassurance every parent-to-be or new parent needs.

The Importance of Reading to Children
A web-exclusive guide for parents written by Penelope Leach, Ph.D.

When parents read aloud to their children, everyone wins. It's fun for the adult and great for the kids. Easy for you and good for them. You don't even have to ration it because, unlike TV or ice cream, there's no such thing as too much.

There's no such thing as too early, either. If you wait until pre-school to start reading to your children, you'll have missed out on years. If you even wait until they can talk, you'll have missed out on months. Start showing your baby pictures and telling her about them as soon as she focuses her eyes on the pattern on your sweater or the change-mat.

"Reading" to tiny babies is a way of talking to them; and talking not only speeds brain development, but cements relationships as well. Make sure that anyone who ever cares for your baby takes reading to her for granted."Reading" to older babies is a way of expanding their experience. You can't always find a real cat or truck or fried egg to tell him about, but you can always find their pictures in books. And linking the sight of things with the sounds of their names boosts language learning.

Reading to toddlers is education and loving and talking and fun. It's about language itself and discovering the joys of jokes and rhymes and huge long words that roll round the tongue and trip it up. It's about learning to "read" pictures to find the meanings of words or the answers to questions hiding behind those thrilling pull-tabs: where's the kitten gone? There he is...And eventually it's about the sheer, entrancing magic of stories unfolding between the pictures and the voice; playing to a dawning imagination, a fledgling ability to put herself in someone else's place.

And reading to pre-schoolers is all that, plus a welcome to our culture where everything--even on the information highway--revolves around the written word. Pictures on the page are his introduction to print; being read to helps him toward written language, now, just as it helped him toward spoken language two years ago.

Once your kids are hooked on being read to, they will never be bored if somebody will read, and since there are bound to be times when nobody will read and they are bored, they'll have the best possible reason to learn to read themselves.

Reading to themselves isn't a signal to stop reading to them, though. Whether your child is five or seven or nine years old when he starts to read stories to himself for pleasure, the mechanics of the words will still get between him and their enthralling sounds and meanings. Read just one more chapter; one more poem. You have nothing to lose and your kids have everything to gain.

Don't worry, you're going to be fine.
By John Reilly
I'm jumping in waaay late on this one, as my sons are in college now, but this book, and this lady, are wonderful. I was a stay at home dad (even though I bartended at night) back when there weren't many dads doing the child care thing. Penelope was an invaluable resource to me, as I didn't have lots of other parents to go to- when you're the only male in the bunch, you can hang out with the moms some, but TOO much seems creepy. So Penelope, T. Barry Brazleton, and a book called "It Worked For Us" (which is awesome, because it lists specific problems and then gives multiple solutions from real parents) were a HUGE help for me. I'd also be willing to bet that she has videos on YouTube. I would advise you to check them out as well. It's the hardest thing you'll ever do, but the most rewarding. And I swear, when that part of your life is past, you'll miss it. I know I do, occasionally. Whether this is some form of masochism or Stockholm Syndrome is up for debate, but I'd never trade my days with my sons when they were small, and the world was ours.

Missing Manual for Your Baby
By Emre Sevinc
When I heard that I'd be a father for the first time in my life, I had mixed feelings and started to ask myself a lot of questions. One of the questions I still ask myself is very simple: The baby arrived home safely and then what? In other words, where's the documentation for the most complex entity that I'll interact for a long time? I guess it is natural to ask this kind of question because I'm a professional software developer and having been involved with computers for the last 20 years I'm used to reading some detailed documentation before and during my interaction with things that I'm not familiar with. And I'm definitely not familiar with raising a baby (having a younger brother does not count, that was about 30 years ago and I don't remember much about the basics).

When I mentioned this to Chris Stephenson, former head of computer science department of Istanbul Bilgi University whom I had the privilege to work with and the experienced father of a wonderful child, he said that there was one book which he gave as a gift to every young parent expecting a child. Based on his advice I decided to buy and read "Your Baby and Child". And I'm very glad that I did.

Some of you may think it is a little bit too early to comment on the book; yes I'm still an expecting father, our baby is yet to come but after reading this book I feel much less scared and more confident. It full of so much practical information that I do not feel the need to go out and look for another book on this topic. The structure of the book is very straightforward, it is mainly organized by the age of the baby and then by the most important topics such as "feeding and growing", "everyday care", "excreting", "sleeping", "crying and comforting" and others such as "talking" which appear under the relevant age section.

At 560 pages it may seem a little intimidating or superfluous but the style of the author is very clear and almost every sentence contains nuggets of important information. Compared to some other books on parenting this book does not try to comfort you with endless humour, but just like a firm, caring parent it tries to be your guide in this journey. It also includes short reactions and thoughts of parents who faced different situations. The book comments on these, too, which I also found very informative.

I have no doubt that I'm going to keep it very close to our baby's bed. Some people may think that parenting naturally come to them, just like breathing, and there's no need to panick but having learned that even breathing can be studied I prefer to have a handy guide when it comes to interacting with my baby.

insightful and userfriendly
By Clover
Reassuring, non-preaching, with a warm tone, this book is the go-to-resource in the middle of the night, when there's not another parent you can ask, or when you're thinking about questions to ask the pediatrician in the morning.
A book so thoughtful that you'll find answers even after several years of parenting.
It is written in a very appealing and easy form.
I was given it as a gift, and have bought it many times for others. This is the book that I most often give to new parents (followed by "Unconditional Parenting" by Alfie Kohn.)

Crip Theory: Cultural Signs of Queerness and Disability (Cultural Front), by Robert McRuer

Crip Theory attends to the contemporary cultures of disability and queerness that are coming out all over. Both disability studies and queer theory are centrally concerned with how bodies, pleasures, and identities are represented as “normal” or as abject, but Crip Theory is the first book to analyze thoroughly the ways in which these interdisciplinary fields inform each other.

Drawing on feminist theory, African American and Latino/a cultural theories, composition studies, film and television studies, and theories of globalization and counter-globalization, Robert McRuer articulates the central concerns of crip theory and considers how such a critical perspective might impact cultural and historical inquiry in the humanities. Crip Theory puts forward readings of the Sharon Kowalski story, the performance art of Bob Flanagan, and the journals of Gary Fisher, as well as critiques of the domesticated queerness and disability marketed by the Millennium March, or Bravo TV’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. McRuer examines how dominant and marginal bodily and sexual identities are composed, and considers the vibrant ways that disability and queerness unsettle and re-write those identities in order to insist that another world is possible.

Review

“This well-annotated text invites the uninitiated reader to become involved, to reimagine previously held perceptions of what may be considered ‘otherness,’ to welcome disabilities, to access collectively other worlds and future possibilities.”
-Journal of American Studies

“Engaging, expansive, and generous.”
-Sex Roles

“A wonderful combination of humor, theory, intellectual, and personal insights . . . A valuable and well-written study.”
-Disability Studies Quarterly

“A compelling case that queer and disabled identities, politics, and cultural logics are inexorably intertwined, and that queer and disability theory need one another…. Makes clear that no cultural analysis is complete without attention to the politics of bodily ability and alternative corporealities.”
-Elizabeth Freeman, author of The Wedding Complex

“McRuer charts new intersections for disability studies, queer studies, and American studies. His work is [at its] most vertiginous and rich . . . as he moves swiftly from cinema to street gangs to coming out Crip.”
-American Quarterly

“The members of the Committee were especially impressed by McRuer’s original intervention in the area of queer studies, one that not only sheds light on the important new area of disability studies, but brings it into conversation with a variety of disciplinary perspectives, from composition studies to performance art. McRuer’s book combines the public and the private work of queer studies in surprisingly new ways.”

-Ed Madden,Gay and Lesbian Caucus for the MLA

“Important and significant for its attempt to find the common ground between disability studies and queer studies. This deftly written and very readable book will appeal to a wide range of readers who are increasingly fascinated by the biocultural interplay between the body, sexuality, gender, and social identity.”
-Lennard Davis, author of Bending Over Backwards

Solid grounding in radical theory and new crip/queer ideas
By J. Avory Faucette
Densely theoretical but readable for someone college-educated and immersed in either queer ideas or disability language, this book is fantastic in its imaginative scope and evoking of solid examples. Berube hops among artists, writers, performers, and academics to develop a crip theory that refuses to assimilate and focuses on shaking things up both for the queer world and for people with disabilities. I couldn't stop highlighting passages and ideas to explore at a later date. Those who don't have graduate school experience may find some of the book a little difficult to navigate, but it's accessible as theoretical works go and worth picking through for anyone with an interest in disabilities and queerness, and especially those living at the intersections of the two.

Resistance
By tamiii
I read this about a year ago. It has taken me this long to digest and appreciate this intriguing book. When I first started to talk about it with older gay men, the reaction was visceral anger. Naturally, homosexual men have struggled against being classified as pathological, celebrating the elimination of homosexuality as a disorder from the psychiatrist's catalogue of pathologies. Some see it as a step backwards from the march toward assimilation, a goal which I do not share.

Yet, there has to be a realistic discussion about seropositivity and the struggles of those who likewise seek access but are barred for other 'disabilities.' Further, there are parallels to be found in class struggle, particularly the need in the U.S. for a national health plan, employment, housing, and the whole lot of things for which people are seeking 'access.'

The author here claims 'crip' in the same way that some claim 'queer.' They are labels applied to segregate out and strip people from access to the very things needed for survival. There is simply too much in common between the various and numerous abject peoples not to notice. Not least, the way in which those terms can be turned around, claimed, and used to resist.

This having been said, I am doubtful how much can be achieved in a classroom. As the old saying went: class consciousness is knowing which side you are on; class struggle is knowing who is there with you. This is a step toward recognizing allies.
