Grade 6 Up Sophie Hatter reads a great deal and soon realizes that as the eldest of three daughters she is doomed to an uninteresting future. She resigns herself to making a living as a hatter and helping her younger sisters prepare to make their fortunes. But adventure seeks her out in the shop where she sits alone, dreaming over her hats. The wicked Witch of the Waste, angered by "competition" in the area, turns her into a old woman, so she seeks refuge inside the strange moving castle of the wizard Howl. Howl, advertised by his apprentice as an eater of souls, lives a mad, frantic life trying to escape the curse the witch has placed on him, find the perfect girl of his dreams and end the contract he and his fire demon have entered. Sophie, against her best instincts and at first unaware of her own powers, falls in love. So goes this intricate, humorous and puzzling tale of fantasy and adventure which should both challenge and involve readers. Jones has created an engaging set of characters and found a new use for many of the appurtenances of fairy talesseven league boots and invisible cloaks, among others. At times, the action becomes so complex that readers may have to go back to see what actually happened, and at the end so many loose ends have to be tied up at once that it's dizzying. Its a short, fun book with a strong main character that can be enjoyed by readers of any age.

Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite movies. It has a warm, fairy-tale quality to it that I had always attributed to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's mastery, and while I believe they are most definitely due some credit, I see now that credit is due primarily to Diana Wynne Jones.
I was unaware that Howl's was based on a book upon my first viewing of the movie, but when I learned of it I knew that I just had to read it. Having finally done so I couldn't be more pleased. It has that same fairy tale feeling that the movie has, and from the very first line it captures you. Its a short, fun book with a strong main character that can be enjoyed by readers of any age. You owe it to yourself to give it a read someday.

Great light read

I remember seeing the movie they made out of this when I was younger and remember as quite good. Since in my experience the books are always better than the movie I decided to give it a read. True to form this book is much better than the film and well worth the time of reading it. The movie actually changed a great deal. The author creates a magical world that fits the eccentric characters very well. The story moves along at a nice pace and never gets boring. Good for young readers as well as adults looking for pleasure reading but who don't have the time for a longer more complex novel.

A Magical Adventure

Quiet Sophie had worked in her father's shop for a very long time. Her sisters were now on their own, her stepmother spent most of her days elsewhere and Sophie, when she least expects it, comes in contact with the Witch of the Waste. Not happy with her hat shop's offerings, she casts a spell on Sophie making her an old woman. And what a crackerjack lady she becomes!
But her real adventure began when she came upon Howl's castle and meets the mysterious Calcifer, the crotchety young Michael and, of course, Howl the wizard. There was a special door that opened to different places, the incantation that prevented Sophie from telling others she is cursed and magic everywhere.
I have to let you know that I watched the movie with my family first. We loved it. And like others have revealed the movie and the book are not quite the same. This is where I part ways with so many others. I thought the narrative version was tame compared with the dvd. The story was enchanting but I liked the movie much better.
Though the author initially aimed the story at older children, this is an awesome fairy tale/fantasy for adults, too. I found myself mesmerized by the magic and people of this land. If you have the choice, read the book first. If you enjoy it, then look for the movie. They both have the same title but their 'takes' are different. Then judge for yourself which one you like more.
