Excellent intro to UVM
By Kari
This UVM primer fills a large void in learning the basic concepts of UVM. While one can take a class or read articles and code snippets on many of the Verification websites, this book is helpful on getting the overall picture which helps to answer the question "why bother with UVM". I highly recommend the book for anyone new to UVM as well as for those who have been using UVM for a while. In Verification it is easy to get too mired up in the details to forget what where you're going and why. The book is concise, easy to read, and even had me chuckling at times. I've been working as an ASIC Design/Verification Engineer for over a decade, have been using UVM for 2 years, and this is one of the best books I've read on the subject. It's highly recommended.

Excellent introductory book! If you want to know how to go from a Verilog testbench to SystemVerilog testbench, this is it!
By Ruben Martinez
I had been looking for a book that walked me from a testbench originally written in Verilog and how to evolve it to Systemverilog written in the Universal Verification Methodology (UVM) style. The writing in this primer is easily understood and entertaining. Support is available from the author's website in the form of downloadable SystemVerilog source code from his website. Additional support in the form of videos is also available on Youtube from his channel. To get the most from this book, you should be familiar with Java since SystemVerilog classes and methods are based heavily on Java.

To fill in the necessary gaps, I would recommend "System Verilog for Verification" by Chris Spears as a follow up book.

Great Primer to start leaning UVM.
By J N
This is a good book to learn the basics of UVM. The author takes a simple Verilog test bench and converts it System Verilog, Object oriented Verilog and then UVM. You can see the evolution of the test bench as it is updated. For best results, download the code and follow along on the You Tube channel. This book will teach the terminology and give you a good overview of UVM.

This unprecedented new book by top-selling author Les Beletsky (Birds of the World, Birdsongs) will aim to explain why birders are interested in going to other countries and where they like to go. It will act as a "bridge" for domestic birders, allowing them to build on their exciting new knowledge as beginner birders by accessing other countries to see species they cannot see at home. The book, in six chapters, will describe each continent with respect to birds and birding, and tell what kinds of birds birders seek out in those places, along with practical pointers on international birding contacts and field guides. Engaging sidebars throughout the book, tell short stories of birding adventures looking for special birds or unique birding locations.

"Besides dazzling the eyes with hundreds of full-color photos, the book lists the best field guides for each region covered, provides contact information for local birding groups, and suggests when an organized tour might be a birder's best option. An excellent introduction to the world of birds outside North America,” –Book News, Inc.

After receiving a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences in 1983, Les enjoyed a long post-doctoral career at the University of Washington in Seattle, conducting field research on the ecology and behavior of birds. Nice pictures, little else
By Brian Allen
I don't like to be the first negative reviewer on a book especially covering my favorite pastime, world birding. This book has a broad but very shallow sweep. The chapters are organized on sections such as Sub-saharan Africa, Europe and the Middle East, Asia etc. The typical section has some general information such as how wonderful the safaris of Africa are and the birds are frosting on the cake, or Europe is great for birding but don't forget the opportunities for viewing the great cultural monuments. Unfortunately this is the trite filling for many parts of this book. The sections have one or two boxes of more interesting information such as the authors' experience looking for the Buff-throated Dipper in South America. This is just enough to have you asking why there wasn't more specific information and description for the rest of the book.

I would have appreciated at least some maps showing the best sites and a list of good birding lodges and parks. One good aspect of the book is a list of species unique to each section but the sections again cover too much area (Europe and the Middle East together) and the species have only general habitat descriptions with little more information that would be useful such as specific locations, parks etc. where they could be found.

I received this book as a gift and was excited to have it but have not mentioned what a disappointing book it is to the very nice person that gave it to me. I am hoping for a much better update to this great idea for a book in the future.

Global Birding
By Brian H. Nordstrom
This book is published by National Geographic. The organization is by continent, with overviews of families of birds. The emphasis is on the most sought-after birds of each continent. The photography is beautiful. The book gives you a good feeling for how bird families are distributed around the world and how similar families occur on different continents. If you're birding overseas, it's a book worth looking at before you leave home, but don't take it with you on the plane--it's too heavy.

GLOBAL BIRDING: TRAVELING THE WORLD IN SEARCH OF BIRDS offers a fine, world-wide survey of birds and pairs lovely color photos with insights on birds of different environments, from mountains to prairies. Chapters divided by different countries of the world cover local birding opportunities, are specific in scope, and provide armchair naturalists and would-be travelers alike with fine insights into the natural history of each region. General lending collections will find this a specific, fine pick!

Cure: A Journey into the Science of Mind Over Body, by Jo Marchant

A rigorous, skeptical, deeply reported look at the new science behind the mind's surprising ability to heal the body.

Have you ever felt a surge of adrenaline after narrowly avoiding an accident? Salivated at the sight (or thought) of a sour lemon? Felt turned on just from hearing your partner's voice? If so, then you've experienced how dramatically the workings of your mind can affect your body.

Yet while we accept that stress or anxiety can damage our health, the idea of "healing thoughts" was long ago hijacked by New Age gurus and spiritual healers. Recently, however, serious scientists from a range of fields have been uncovering evidence that our thoughts, emotions and beliefs can ease pain, heal wounds, fend off infection and heart disease and even slow the progression of AIDS and some cancers.

In Cure, award-winning science writer Jo Marchant travels the world to meet the physicians, patients and researchers on the cutting edge of this new world of medicine. We learn how meditation protects against depression and dementia, how social connections increase life expectancy and how patients who feel cared for recover from surgery faster. We meet Iraq war veterans who are using a virtual arctic world to treat their burns and children whose ADHD is kept under control with half the normal dose of medication. We watch as a transplant patient uses the smell of lavender to calm his hostile immune system and an Olympic runner shaves vital seconds off his time through mind-power alone.

Drawing on the very latest research, Marchant explores the vast potential of the mind's ability to heal, lays out its limitations and explains how we can make use of the findings in our own lives. With clarity and compassion, Cure points the way towards a system of medicine that treats us not simply as bodies but as human beings.

—New York Times

“Cure is a cautious, scrupulous investigation of how the brain can help heal our bodies. It is also an important look at the flip side of this coin, which is how brains damaged by stress may make bodies succumb to physical illness or accelerated aging…Cure points a way toward a future in which the two camps [mainstream medicine and alternative therapies] might work together. After all, any medicine that makes a patient better, whether conventional, alternative, or placebo, is simply medicine.”

Marchant has travelled extensively around Europe and the US, talking to health workers and ordinary folk, to produce this meticulously researched book… Cure is a much-needed counter to a reductionist medical culture that ignores anything that doesn’t show up in a scan… [it] should be compulsory reading for all young doctors.”
—New Scientist

“A revved-up, research-packed explication of the use of mind in medicine, from meditation to guided visualisation. Marchant’s nimble reportage on the work of scientists in novel fields such as psychoneuroimmunology and her discussion of placebos are as fresh as her reminders of how stress and poverty affect wellbeing are timely."
—Nature

“Could my belief that I’m going to feel better in itself heal me? It’s a fascinating question, and one that British author Jo Marchant takes on with aplomb in her new book, Cure.”
—Spirituality & Health

“Writing with simplicity, clarity and style, and covering an enormous range of material, [Marchant] surveys with grace what we think we know, and what we would like to know, about the mysterious and troubling relationship between our minds and our bodies… [She] is level-headed, always with one foot planted in the worlds of science and reason. Though open-minded, she is rigorous, her gently skeptical tone reassures, and she gracefully skewers quackery.”
—The Guardian

“Thought-provoking… This new generation of evidence-based mind-body researchers has produced some remarkable findings, which Marchant analyses with elegance and lucidity."
—Times Literary Supplement

“Jo Marchant makes her case so cogently that it is hard to disagree [with her]… The author has a gift for writing that is both clear and vivid, and communicates complex ideas in a way that is comprehensible and uncondescending… This is surely an area of medicine whose time has come.”
—The Independent

"A diligent and useful work that makes the case for 'holistic' medicine while warning against the snake-oil salesmen who have annexed that word for profit."
—Sunday Times

“This is an important book, and one that will challenge those dismissive of efforts to investigate how our thoughts, emotions and beliefs might directly influence our physical wellbeing… The evolving science explored in Cure is intriguing and trailblazing, and Marchant's account of its pursuit is often gripping… There's a lot to this impressive book, and it has the potential to have the same dramatic impact on our understanding of our self as Norman Doidge's blockbuster, The Brain that Changes Itself.”
—Sydney Morning Herald

"Marchant explores the possibilities of psychology-based approaches to improving physical well-being in this open-minded, evidence-based account… A powerful and critically needed conceptual bridge for those who are frustrated with pseudoscientific explanations of alternative therapies but intrigued by the mind’s potential power to both cause and treat chronic, stress-related conditions."
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"A balanced, informative review of a controversial subject."
—Kirkus Reviews

"Cure represents a journey in the best sense of the word: a vivid, compassionate, generous exploration of the role of the human mind in both health and illness. Drawing on her training as a scientist and a science writer, Marchant meticulously investigates both promising and improbable theories of the mind’s ability to heal the body. The result is to illuminate a fascinating approach to medicine, full of human detail, integrity, and ultimately, hope.”
—Deborah Blum, author of The Poisoner’s Handbook and Love at Goon Park

“This is popular science writing at its very best. Cure beautifully describes the cutting-edge research going on in the fascinating—and until now, often unexplored—area of mind-body medicine. I would recommend this book to anybody who has a mind and a body.”
—Henry Marsh, author of Do No Harm: Stories of Life, Death, and Brain Surgery

Chapter 2

Linda Buonanno hugs me as soon as we meet, and shows me upstairs to her small, first-floor apartment in a housing block just off the freeway in Methuen, Massachusetts. Her living space is tidy but densely packed with framed photos, scented candles and an overwhelming preference for the color green. She sits me at the table, in front of a perfectly laid out tea set and a plate of ten macaroons. The 67-year-old is plump with short, auburn hair and a girlish giggle. “Everyone thinks it’s dyed, but it isn’t,” she tells me. She hovers until I try a macaroon, then sits down opposite and tells me about her struggles with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

She talks fast. Her symptoms first struck two decades ago, when her marriage of 23 years broke down. Although she dreamed of being a hair- dresser, she was working shifts in a factory, running machinery that made surgical blades, juggling the 60-hour week with a court battle and caring for the two youngest of her four children. “I went through  hell,” she says. Within a year of the split, she started suffering from intestinal pains, cramps, diarrhea and bloating.

The condition has affected her ever since, especially at stressful times such as when she was laid off from the factory. Their jobs outsourced to Mexico, the group of women with whom she had worked and bonded was scattered. She retrained as a medical assistant, hoping to find work in a
chiropractor’s office, but once she qualified she found that no one was hiring. When she did finally find a part-time job, she had to give it up because of the pain from her IBS.

The condition has destroyed her social life too. When the symptoms are bad, “I can’t even leave the house,” she says. “I’d be keeling over in pain, running to the bathroom all the time.” Even buying groceries re- quires staying within reach of a bathroom, and she lists the local facilities: one in the Market Basket, one in the post office down the street. “This is 20 years I’ve been doing this,” she says. “It’s a horrible way to live.” Now she has to juggle the condition with looking after her elderly parents— her mother lives alone, while her father, who suffers from dementia, is in a nursing home. Linda’s brother was killed in Vietnam, and her twin sister died of cancer 18 years ago, so she is the only one left to help them.

She brightens. “But I travel,” she says. “I go to England, I do every- thing. I love it.” I’m thrown by this statement until I realize that she’s talking about Google maps. I ask her to show me, and we move over to her computer, which sits on a desk squeezed between the sofa and the micro- wave. She fires up the maps program and lands us on top of Buckingham Palace in London.

Suddenly I get a sense of how much time Linda has spent in this flat. She knows the layout of the palace intimately, zooming in to try to peek through the windows, then flying around the back to check out the private gardens. Other favorite destinations include the Caribbean island of Aruba, and the celebrity mansions of Rodeo Drive. Sometimes she looks up the addresses of her old workmates from the factory, friends who when they lost their jobs moved away to Kentucky or California, places that because of her IBS, and the demands of her parents, she can never visit for real.

Over the years, Linda has, like many patients with irritable bowel syn- drome, been passed from doctor to doctor. She has been tested for intol- erances and allergies, and has tried cutting out everything from gluten and fat to tomatoes. But she found no relief until she took part in a trial led by Ted Kaptchuk, a professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston. It was a trial that would revolutionize the world of placebo research.

•     •     •

“You know I’m deviant?” Ted Kaptchuk looks straight at me and I get the sense that he is rather proud of this fact.1 “Yes,” I answer. It’s hard to read anything about the Harvard professor without coming across his unusual past. In fact it seeps from every corner of our surroundings—the house where he lives and works, on a leafy side street in Cambridge, Mas- sachusetts.

I’m asked to remove my shoes as I enter, and offered a cup of Earl Grey tea. Persian rugs cover the wooden floors, and proudly displayed in the hall is a huge brass tea urn. The décor is elegant, featuring period furniture, modern art and shelves filled with books—rows of hardbound doorstops embossed with gold Chinese lettering next to English volumes, from The Jewish Wardrobe to Honey Hunters of Nepal. Through the win- dow I glimpse the nuanced greens and pinks of a manicured ornamental garden that might be more at home in Japan.

Kaptchuk himself has gold rings, big brown eyes and a sweep of gray- ing hair topped by a black skullcap. He likes to quote from historical man- uscripts, and his answers to my questions are accompanied by long pauses and a furrowed brow. I ask him to tell me his own version of the path that brought him here and he says it started when he was a student and he traveled to Asia to study traditional Chinese medicine.

It’s a decision he attributes to “sixties craziness. I wanted to do some- thing anti-imperialist.” He was also interested in Eastern religions and phi- losophies, and the thinking of the Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong. “Now I think that was a really bad reason to study Chinese medicine. But I didn’t wanted to be co-opted, I didn’t want to be part of the system.”

After four years in Taiwan and China, he returned to the U.S. with a degree in Chinese medicine and opened a small acupuncture clinic in Cambridge. He saw patients with all sorts of conditions, mostly chronic complaints from pain to digestive, urinary and respiratory problems. Over the years, however, he became more and more uncomfortable with his role as a healer. He was good at what he did—perhaps too good. He would see dramatic cures, sometimes before patients had even received their treatment. “I would have patients who left my office totally differ- ent,” he says. “Because they sat and talked to me, and I wrote a prescrip- tion. I was petrified that I was psychic. I thought, Shit, this is crazy.”

Ultimately, Kaptchuk concluded that he didn’t have paranormal pow- ers. But equally, he believed that his patients’ striking recoveries didn’t have anything to do with the needles or the herbs he was prescribing. They were because of something else, and he was interested in finding out what that something was.

In 1998, Harvard Medical School, just down the street from Kaptchuk’s clinic, was looking for an expert in Chinese medicine. The U.S.  National Institutes  of Health (NIH)  was opening a center dedi- cated to funding scientific research into alternative and complementary medicine. Although tiny compared to existing NIH centers investigating cancer, for example, or genetics, it promised to be a useful new source of research dollars for Harvard. “But no one there knew a thing about Chinese medicine or any kind of alternative medicine,” says Kaptchuk. “So they hired me.”

Rather than study Chinese medicine directly, however, he decided to investigate the placebo effect, to find out whether this could explain why his patients did so well. Whereas Benedetti is interested in the molecules and mechanics of the placebo effect, Kaptchuk’s focus is on people. The questions he asks are psychological and philosophical. Why should the expectation of a cure affect us so profoundly? Can the placebo effect be split into different components? Is our response affected by factors such as the type of placebo we take, or the bedside manner of our doctor?

In one of his first trials, Kaptchuk compared the effectiveness of two different kinds of placebo—fake acupuncture and a fake pill—in 270 pa- tients with persistent arm pain.2  It’s a study that makes no sense from a conventional perspective. When comparing two inert treatments— nothing with nothing—you wouldn’t expect to see any difference. Yet Kaptchuk did see a difference. Placebo acupuncture was more effective for reducing the patients’ pain, whereas the placebo pill worked better for helping them to sleep.

This is the problem with placebo effects—in trials they are elusive and ephemeral, rarely disappearing completely but often altering their shape. They change depending on the type of placebo, and they vary in strength between people, conditions and cultures. For example, the percentage of people who responded to placebo in trials of a particular ulcer medication ranged from 59% in Denmark to just 7% in Brazil.3 The same placebo can have positive, zero or negative effects depending on what we’re told about it, and the effects can change over time. Such shifting results have helped to create an aura around the placebo effect as something slightly unscientific if not downright crazy.

But it isn’t crazy. What these results actually show, says Kaptchuk, is that scientists have long gotten their understanding of the placebo effect backwards. When he arrived at Harvard, he says, the experts there told him that the placebo effect “was the effect of an inert substance.” It’s a commonly used description but one that Kaptchuk describes as “com- plete nonsense.” By definition, he points out, an inert substance does not have any effect.

What does have an effect, of course, is our psychological response to those inert substances. Neither fake acupuncture nor a fake pill is in itself capable of doing anything. But patients interpret them in different ways, and that in turn creates different changes in their symptoms.

Current Science on the Importance of the Mind in Fighting Disease and Staying Well
By Spencer in Seattle
As someone with an autoimmune disease (multiple sclerosis), I read quite a bit in the areas of health and medicine, alternative medicine, and the history of medicine. This book, written by a British journalist who also has a PhD in microbiology, gives us a vibrant look at the powers of the mind in healing. She studies the current research and presents it in an accessible way. I'm not at all surprised that this book has rocketed to several top-seller lists.

Note that this book deals a lot with the powers of the placebo effect. The point here is not that doctors should be tricking everyone who is ill, just to make them feel good. Instead, the idea is that the placebo effect shows us certain things that can be harnessed to lead to wellness. For instance, being cared for really helps people heal, as does having belief and simply doing something to try to help with the problem. Our expectations are vitally important when it comes to healing, as are our previous experiences. Many factors determine how we respond to medical treatment and neglect. This book is about understanding those elements and bringing them into regular medical care instead of just relying on fake pills, as we can learn a lot from the placebo effect.

Here are the main things I see as take-aways in this book:
==========================================================

● Because of the importance of the mind/body connection, the placebo effect, and the studies cited by the author, it's extremely important to find a great healthcare provider you really trust. If you don't do this, your chances of doing well are simply undermined because you won't have belief in the person you're working with, and you might not even have belief in yourself. A good provider needs to be empathic and supportive, as their attitude is really beneficial to people going through treatment. The style and quality of your care provider matters a lot.

● For those of us with a serious disease, doing something about it is so much better and more important than doing nothing. This is because doing something -- if it's taking a drug or following a lifestyle "cure" -- harnesses the powers of the mind and body to work for you. Doing what you believe in really matters.

● For some things, the mind/body connection is really helpful: Things like pain, depression, fatigue, nausea, and generally "how we feel" are the most able to be influenced by mind/body interaction.

● Following from this, autoimmune responses are often influenced by the mind/body connection. Said another way, autoimmune diseases are particularly susceptible to mind/body interaction

● For other things, the mind/body connection is much less relevant. Things like infections need antibiotics and things like broken bones need casts.

● Stress is a real killer, as is emphasized in this book over and over. Stress is rooted in our flight-or-fight ancestry, switching on to save our lives. But switching this response on for a long time can result in things like high blood pressure and really damaging your body. With chronic stress, inflammation kicks in, which is not really what you want all the time (especially for those with MS). Stress can even rewire the brain (based on brain-scan research), and this has been documented.

For people with MS in particular and autoimmune diseases in general, there are a few particular take-aways in this book:
==========================================================

● Biofeedback and meditation can be particularly helpful, but you really need to "put in the hours" giving them time to rewire your brain and whole self. These practices don't heal us over night. You really need to take time to rewire your brain away from a stressed-out neural network.

● When people with MS have flare-ups, not getting too anxious about it is vitally important. This is for two reasons: 1) imagining improvement and thinking positively can actually bring it about, and 2) this point of view can help mitigate stress, thus keeping the exacerbation from getting worse

● With MS, inflammation is the real source of the problem (as our white blood cells are attacking the central nervous system), and stress has been shown to cause swelling. As a result, limiting stress is utterly vital for those of us with MS. Negative worries and anxieties can be equally destructive. Stress kills us in particular, because of the way MS works.

● Treating MS in ways you believe in really matters. Belief and healing go hand in hand. For me, this means that mainstream and alternative approaches can all "work" or be helpful, as long as you are invested in them and coming from a position of belief and positivity.

● Being cared for well is also essential, as the placebo effect is tapped into when you're feeling cared for.

Serious, Compelling and Mind-Changing Book
By Anne Mills
This book is a great introduction to mind/body phenomena in medicine, because it approaches the topic from a rigorously scientific, evidence-based standpoint. Ms. Marchant is a science and history journalist with a doctorate in microbiology, and without any touch of New Agey credulity. She looks at the ways in which the mind can affect the body's ability to cure itself, looking at individual case histories and at studies of many cases. Much of the evidence she cites is compelling; her arguments are strong enough to make me consider a non-traditional approach to my chronic hip pain, and for someone as science-based as I, that's quite a concession.
Beyond convincing arguments and evidence, Ms. Marchant has written an eminently readable and engrossing book. She makes one thing very clear: the antipathy of the current medical establishment to non-traditional medicine, even when it is shown to be helpful. This is based on the sad fact that it is at present very difficult to make money from an approach that leans to fewer pills, less intervention, and more human contact. Perhaps efforts at cost saving will bring this approach more into the limelight. In the meantime, this book is well worth reading, particularly for those with intractable medical issues.

Fascinating!

Review first posted on jenasbookreviews.blogspot.com

Jo Marchant goes around the world exploring the concept of just how much influence over our body the mind actually has and the results are incredible. It's long been established that stress and anxiety have a detrimental effect on our bodies but now research is finally catching up that healing thoughts, placebos, and most of all human connection can have incredibly beneficial results on not only our mental well being but our physical well being as well. It may be that homeopathy doesn't work because of the memory of some chemical compound but rather that it's the fact that the practitioner takes the time to sit and talk with the patient, something that is lacking more and more in the Western medical culture where it's how many people can you get in and out with a pill. Studies are even finding that placebos can have amazing affects on the mind and body even when the patient knows that they are taking a placebo but that simply the act of doing something can cause the brain to release it's own cures. I found it interesting that as I was reading the book the neurological/immune system link that was talked about having to exist but not yet found was discovered. The whole book was a fascinating read about what our minds are capable of.

From the Inside Flap
Like the industry itself, the fundamentals of biotech investing are unique. Because the financial characteristics of biotechnology investments are unlike those of any other sector on the market, few analysts and investors predicted the industry's recent, dramatic gains and even fewer profited from it.

The Biotech Investor's Bible is a practical guide to the essentials of biotechnology investment. Along with the most promising investing strategies, George Wolff provides an overview of an industry that many observers expect to emerge over the next century as the largest and most important business sector in the world.

Wolff first focuses on the unique financial forces that drive biotech markets. With this approach, you'll gain a better understanding of the structure of the industry and its many processes, setting the stage for an analysis of sensible investment criteria. He then simplifies complex scientific concepts and technical terminology so you can quickly cut through industry jargon and make informed investment decisions.

To help you get in as close as pos-sible on biotech's ground floor, Wolff prepares you with:
* Guidelines and commonsense methods for picking companies
* Details on new technologies and innovations
* Advice on how to pick lesser known companies with unrealized value
* Insights on how to structure a biotech portfolio
* A breakdown of 185 major biotech companies

Today, more than five thousand companies are engaged in the development of biotechnology worldwide. The work they do will fundamentally change life in this century, and every investor has a vested interest in knowing how the next industrial revolution will affect their holdings. No sector, from oil to insurance, from mining to medicine, will remain untouched.

At last a book that makes some sense of the biotech sector! The author, George Wolff has a very straightforward approach, starting with the big picture of the industry's development and then getting down to specifics about market behavior such as the reasons for the sector's incredible volatility. Wolff's analysis involves breaking the sector down in Four Tiers. Each behaves somewhat differently with the lowest Tier being both the riskiest and the cheapest to buy into. Tier One encompasses the well-known majors such as Amgen, which are relatively safe but less exciting plays. I think Wolff has set out a framework of understanding that allows investors to discriminate among the companies to find a reasonable balance of growth potential and security. Most of the book is strictly about investment analysis but the second part of it (Book 2) tries to decode the scientific background. I like his analogy, comparing the workings of DNA and cellular machinery to the innards of a computer. It's a clear enough explanation to convince me that I finally understand this abstract stuff. All in all, a good, illuminating read for people like me who are interested in the industry and where it's going. The investment advice is sensible and has a reasonable tone....not a "get rich quick book." I know there's another book on the market that looks strictly at the medical side of the biotech business. I like the fact the Wolff has gone beyond that to look at the ways the industry can affect a lot of other major sectors such as energy, chemicals, textiles and so on. Wolff believes biotech is going to become the biggest industry in the world and now that I see where the industry is headed, I think he's right.

Biotech - What every serious investror must know.
By Paul V. Herzfeld
I highly recommend this important book! You would have to be living under a rock to have not heard about the great advances made recently in genetics and biotechnology. The potential for a cure to cancer, the ability to fix previously incurable diseases, and many other medical advancements are becoming closer to reality because of biotechnology. But where could an investor go to educate himself on the many issues facing this industry? Nowhere. Until now. Investors who can sort through the myriad of scientific, corporate and government issues relating to this industry will be have a great advantage over the rest of us. George Wolff's highly readable primer gives its readers this advantage.
As an investment advisor, I know the great potential of biotech. All you need to do is look at the multi-hundred billion dollar market capitalization of the Mercks and Pfizers to know that success in drug development holds the key to untold riches. But which companies will get there? How do you as an investor approach this very complex field?
George Wolff's Biotech Investor's Bible thoughtfully lays out the key issues an investor must be familiar with. Product pipelines, alliances with major drug companies, strategies companies use to speed up FDA trials, valuation techniques, and a myriad of other important issues are thoroughly explained by Wolff in plain English.
A huge run-up in biotech stock prices in early 2000 was sparked by the expectation that the human genome would be mapped. The bubble burst in March 2000, leaving many of the hottest stocks broken and battered. The theoretical excitement however, has given way now to a market that is focused on the companies that have an aggregate of several hundred drugs in various stages of FDA trials. Many of these stocks have recovered and in some cases gone on to new highs. Wolff provides not only the overview of the industry you need, but also the means to determine which individual companies show the greatest promise.
Without this book and its comprehensive explanation of biotech investing, I would never attempt to participate in this market. But you should ask yourself: can you afford not to? With the tech sector in a shambles, with the stock market stagnating in general, what will bring on the next high-growth trend? A strong case for biotech is made by the author. The fast pace of research, the growing base of scientific knowledge in the field, and the several current winners like Amgen which sports a $65 billion market capitalization, all clearly point to the future development of many new, effective treatments which will be brought forth at an ever-increasing rate for decades to come. I for one plan to stay informed and involved with my investment dollars.
You truly would omit this book from your reading list at your own financial peril.

Like most people, I have read with interest many of the articles written in the last year about new biotech medical breakthrus, human genome project updates and the wild stock market performance of so many of these dynamic companies -- read, but not really understood. I was even tempted to invest in these cutting-edge technologies, but had no idea where to begin to research this specialized field. Until now... The Biotech Investor's Bible was a surprisingly easy and compelling read and loaded with an amazing amount of useful research material and background information. As a non-scientist, I was relieved by how clearly and even entertainingly Mr. Wolff writes about these companies and about the investment process. His enthusiasm is contagious. I found the "8 questions to ask yourself before investing" and the extensive information on how to use the internet to do research on this sector especially helpful. Understanding the difference in the three phases of clinical trials and how and where the results are reported is not only useful information for anyone evaluating investment opportunities, but for anyone wanting to keep abreast of promising new medical treatments. The first half of the book focuses on investment opportunites in this field of the future and the second half more on the science behind the headlines and the biotech companies. To my surprise, while I didn't fully understand everything about the science, I couldn't put the book down. I'm confident I now know more about this field than my financial advisor and look forward to applying what I've learned to diversify my stock portfolio.

Synthetic Aperture Radar, by Christopher F. Barnes

Synthetic Aperture Radar, Wave Theory Foundations, Analysis and Algorithms delivers a comprehensive and in-depth study of the subject. This book covers all major topics related to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) science, systems and software. SAR science is established on a foundation of wave theory. SAR systems for stripmap, spotlight, spotmap, volumetric, inverse, scan, swept, etc. modes are explained. SAR analysis techniques are presented at a detailed mathematical level, including analyses of chirp signals, and both stretch and chirp receiver systems. All SAR algorithm classes are presented: Stolt formatting, polar formatting (including direct and filtered back-projection methods), hyperbolic coherent summing, spherical coherent summing (including direct, filtered and factorized back-propagation versions), range stacking, range-Doppler and chirp scaling. Most SAR algorithms are described with sufficient detail to enable software implementations. Novel methods for volumetric SAR (VolSAR) imaging are presented. The empowerment of diffraction limited VolSAR imaging with swarms of SAR sensors and non-linear flight paths is demonstrated in simulation studies. Coherent fusion of multiband SAR is also demonstrated. Vector and scalar wave motion equations based on Maxwell's equations and acoustic wave dynamics are derived. Electromagnetic and acoustic wave theory principles are used to develop SAR signal models for both differential and integral descriptions of terrain scattering and received backscatter. SAR and computed imaging literature of the last sixty years is extensively surveyed and summarized. Relationships between SAR image formation algorithms and the computed imaging algorithms of holography, diffraction tomography, ray tomography and seismology are explained. Many variations of SAR algorithms that can be found in the literature are organized into a taxonomy that illuminates algorithm relationships. #SARWAVE

Fusion in Confusion
By Masoud Farshchian
Another excellent book from what should be called: "The Georgia Tech School of Radar".

This book by Prof. Barnes attempts to provide a holistic foundation of modern synthetic aperture radar theory that is different from the popular classical works. The classical works I am familiar with are: 1) Digital Processing of Synthetic Aperture Radar Data by Cumming and Wong. 2) Spotlight-Mode Synthetic Aperture Radar by Jackowatz et al. 3) Spotlight Synthetic Aperture Radar by Carrara and Majewski. 4) Synthetic Aperture Radar Signal Processing by Soumekh. 5) Synthetic Aperture Radar: Systems and Signal Processing by Curlander et al. Although these books have their strengths, what they lack is fundamental pedagogy in relating basic and advanced signal processing principles to basic and fundamental physics. I shall refer to these books as "legacy books".
What strikingly distinguishes this book from the legacy books is that Barnes has harmoniously synthesized electromagnetic scattering theory and SAR signal processing in a unified framework. Without such a framework, one feels a definite confusion and lack of depth/intuition going through the legacy SAR books. The author in page 12 correctly alludes to the "Balkanization of the practicing SAR communities". Anyone going through even a modest number of the 1000+! references (side note: I do not think there exists too many people reading 1000+ references related to SAR theory) cited by the author notices that many papers and books are based upon a simplified geometric viewpoint that lead to basic equations based upon time-varying range. Subsequently, Taylor series approximations are used to derive basic design parameters of a SAR system. These basic parameters are often contradicted by other papers and books because of different approximations used. Also going from one algorithm to another using these basic geometric diagrams, PSP, hand-waving and Taylor series approximation can lead to vastly different fundamental parameters such as PRF with foreseeable negative consequences.
Barnes on the other hand develops SAR from the wave theory of Huygen-Fresnel, and the approximations of Fraunhofer and Fresnel. This underlying mechanism provides a unity that is not seen in the aforementioned legacy books. What is extremely beautiful about this book is that no more than an undergraduate EMF course (if that!) is needed in order to understand how these wavefield concepts provide the fundamental foundation for the variety of SAR algorithms. This accessibility is rare when discussing such advanced concepts.
Barnes book covers all the standard image formation algorithms such as Polar, Back-Projection, RDA, Omega-K, Range-Stacking etc., as well as providing information and his own innovations on new algorithms such as the three dimensional volumetric SAR (VolSAR). Another point I like about this book is that the author delves into the meat of the problem rather than use abstract notations of operator theory and unconventional mathematical notations which usually have little correlation to designing real world systems. I estimate that there are about 150-200 figures in the book and they also provide further intuition. The book should be useful to practicing engineer, researchers, advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as the theoreticians.
The author should rightfully be proud of this monumental and timely work. Two recommendations for the author are:

1) To provide toy Matlab examples for the various image formation algorithms discussed in the book. 2) To provide video lectures/notes based on his teaching of the courses at Georgia Tech.

One side note for those who are new to radar. The POMR volumes (Principle of Modern Radar volumes 1-3 written mostly by the Georgia Tech School), as well as "Fundamental of Radar Signal Processing" by Prof. Mark Richards are two excellent books to accompany this book. The price of all these books including this SAR book by Barnes are worth it in my opinion. They will provide a necessary foundation for a career that provides orders of magnitude in return.
