Well woven tale of fantasy and intrege

If you are like me and love tales of Witches, Weres and the occasional Vampire, you’ll love this. The author has woven together a town filled with many different groups to create a modern day setting with intrigue and mystery, but it was the delightful lead characters that held my attention throughout. They are each so different, with well written dialogue that you get drawn into their world and the challenges that they have to overcome.

While the story is complete, there is a strong hint at the end that a sequel might follow. Having enjoyed the first story so much, I can’t wait to see what the lovable protagonist will get involved with next.

A great story with a wonderful, loving leading lady

I am NOT normally into witches, vampires and such. To be honest, I doubted I would enjoy it. Someone suggested that I might enjoy it because of the sensitive treatment of Transgender material and I was quickly totally captivated by a clever and fortunately mostly unpredictable story line. I even got caught up in the relationships developed between our heroine Tracy and the dog and later the wolf. The plot will keep you guessing. Very difficult to put down. For a fairly long story, it was a fairly quick read. The only negative was an embarrassing number of typographical errors, but they don't hinder the read. This is a shame considering the quality of the writing. Give it a shot - it's a excellent read...

Good story marred by misuse of English

For the Fairest Review

For the Fairest is a good story involving werewolves, other weres and a tg element. Potter can tell a story & keep the reader interested. I rated the story as 5/5.

Unfortunately, he seems to be hostile toward the English language. I rated this part 2/5. There aren’t a lot of glaring typos in the conventional sense. But there are more misused words than I have ever come across in a single book. Some examples [with correction in brackets]:
All other [over] the place
whipping [wiping]
twirling a finger in her hand [hair]
a full [fool] not to look
dog breathe [breath]
should of [have or ‘ve] repeatedly misused
I went into my house [room; already in the house!]
bearing [baring] teeth
end of the end [bed]
whereas she had blue [eyes; also many missing words]
too [to; ‘too’ is NOT correct at the end of a sentence!]
nerve racking [wracking]
All the [way] through her talk
taking [talking]
deiced [decided]
put up a man [hand]
one [won] the lottery
instance [instant]
I near [knew] this path
In suite [en suite; repeatedly incorrect]
Blood shut [shot]
My favorite: rod [wrought] iron bars
Wouldn’t wish that on anymore [any one]
chasing [causing] me to
diltue [dilute]
implemented him [? Implicated maybe?]
worse [worst; repeatedly misused]
I [it] kind of
You’re [your]
Was happened [happening]
Once and [in] a while
Didn’t see that going [coming]
home [how] old
and more. As well as too many commas, where they even ruin the flow & meaning of some lines.

About the Author
Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck have been good friends and colleagues since 1970. Between them, they have more than 57 years of experience teaching geology to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors. They share a special interest in introducing geology to beginning students and a belief in the value of field experiences for students of all levels.

Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976. That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now going into its tenth edition. In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, gifted geology illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team. Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects. Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio.

Tarbuck enjoys downhill skiing in Colorado, fly fishing near his childhood home in Northern Minnesota, and spending time in the Cascades. Lutgens is an avid runner, and when he can make the time, truly enjoys hiking the canyons of the Colorado Plateau. Although Lutgens and Tarbuck think alike on many issues, they don’t agree on everything. Lutgens is devoted to jazz and classical music, whereas Tarbuck prefers pop artists or a good country station.

Excellent Textbook, Easy to Use

As a student in my first geology course, I find this book amazingly helpful. It is laid out well, the material interestingly presented, the writing style clear and concise. Technical terms are explained and concepts unpacked carefully. Best of all, the author tells the reader what to look for and reviews with "concept checks" the material as it is being read. The chapter reviews at the end are quite well done. My only suggestions would be to vary the order of the material. The chapter of plate tectonics, for example, would be better much earlier on, since much of the material depends on the concepts dealt with there. And there are a few places where technical terms that are not universally used (a problem in geology in general) could be identified with other equivalent terms that the student will encounter elsewhere. If this is in fact the case, I have not yet found out where and how it is done. Overall, an excellent text. I have the Kindle version, which works fantastically.

This book, with over 500 pages of text, is an excellent reference for all things related to geology. It's loaded with excellent graphics: charts, illustrations, pictures, graphs, all enhancing the rich and detailed text. Everything about geology is covered, from the formation and internal structure of the earth to the various rock types that make up the surface of our planet and much, much more. Erosion, weathering, glaciation, earthquakes, volcanoes, it's all included. Geology is all around us and the authors make the subject interesting, understandable, and very readable. This book will greatly enhance the knowledge of anybody who's interested in our planet.

If you buy a valid access code, it lets you read the newer (12th) edition online!

I took Geology 101 using this older edition even tho my class was using the 12th ed. The sub-sections inside a chapter are numbered in the newer edition but not in this one. I finished the class with no problem though :) In most chapters, the contents are very much the same!

Pleasantly surprised to find an ebook access code in it, it allowed me to read either 11th or 12th edition online -- Yay!

Excellent Coverage of COM+

If anyone thinks that COM+ is going away, they are misguided. .NET will still rely on all of the infrastructure for transactional applications that COM+ provides.
Lowy has provided an excellent explanation of COM+ and its architecture and then how .NET will fit in. The chapter on XP is also excellent. Anyone who reads this book could definitely put it in the category of blend between Pattison's ease of reading and Ewald's technical explanations.
All of the code is in ATL 7.0, and although that isn't any really big leap from ATL 3.0, the environment does take some getting used to.
Additionally, the Logger project in Appendix A is worth the price of the book.

This book succeeds in demystifying COM+ component services.

More than just a how-to book, this book clearly explains the fundamental concepts behind component-based distributed development, and provides an appreciation for why a component infrastructure like COM+ is a God-send to COM and .NET component developers.
In addition to describing COM+ features and their use, from developer and administrative perspectives, Lowy provides motivation to take advantage of COM+ features by presenting relevant real-world examples. Furthermore, Lowy points out common pitfalls that can be encountered when dealing with each COM+ feature. The techniques described for avoiding some of these pitfalls are alone worth more than the price of the book.
All key COM+ concepts and technologies are thoroughly covered. Included in the book are chapters on: object context, instance management, transactions, concurrency, the COM+ catalog, security, queued components, events, and COM+ component services as they apply to .NET, where COM+ component services (called Enterprise Services in .NET) are just as critical to successful enterprise application development. The appendices provide a useful log component, as well as a preview of Microsoft's next release of COM+.

Amazing explanations of COM+ Services

I have read several books now on COM+ and MTS before it, and I have never quite understood how everything ties together and works together. So I have been stumbling in the dark on this for years. My components work, but I never knew if they worked optimally.
This book changed all that. Finally, it all makes sense. This is by far the best book on this subject that I have read. Every piece of COM+ is explained clearly and with enough detail to get the point across without bogging down the reader. It even answered some difficult mysteries for me such as "Why is the JITA checkbox greyed out for my transactional components?" I couldn't even find an answer for that one on the newsgroups.
The .NET coverage is brief and was probably an afterthought (in that it appears in a chapter at the end rather than integrated throughout the book), but it is enough to get started. I am looking forward to a second edition of this book that focuses on .NET and has all the code examples in C#. Juval, please write that!

Insomnia Cure...terribly dense and obtuse!

I'm using this book for a graduate course as a student. I've worked in field of IT for 25+ years, so I'm no newbie. This book takes topics that are straightforward and makes them extremely complex and theoretical. The liner notes indicate it was translated into English, which would explain some of the awkward phrasing. You'll read a passage, re-read it again and if you do figure out what they are saying you are left to wonder, "why would you say it that way?" Answer, because it was translated! Strange wording, run on sentences, overly theoretical...can you tell I don't like this book!

Other reviewer was correct that it reads like a run -on journal article, replete with citations and examples...most of which do not help.

Avoid it if you can, but if you must use it, find other sources to help explain the concepts and take comfort in fact that in the real world of IT, it's not this hard! If you are new to the field, hang in there, don't let this book scare you off!

I would not recommend using this text.

I am using this textbook for a class this semester. This text is not reader friendly. Just because the topic is complex does not have to mean the book as to be hard to consume. This book is horribly dense. The images of models are seldom explained. My class hates this book. The book reads like journal articles pasted together to get enough information for a book and I sincerely regret the purchase. You will find yourself reading the same sentence over and over again with still little understanding of the intent of the author. The book throws around terms that it assumes the reader should be familiar with...but then if you were familiar with the terms, you wouldn't need their book. It is a really awful book. I will keep looking. If you were unfortunate enough to pick up this book because your teacher was looking for a text on data warehousing, you have my sympathies. Here are some tips. 1) Use other sources of information to supplement the text. The text alone is useless. 2) Read it early in the morning. The book is really capable of putting you to sleep at any time after 12Noon. 3) Find a data warehousing guru to decipher the examples. Put him on speed dial though. You'll need him after every page. For educators, there are no author's resources except a hard to find manual. You are on your own. You have been warned.

If you're single and own a house, buy this book

Ahh, Martha. I have no idea why people seem to love to hate her. I find her books and TV shows and magazines to be a real joy and I learn tons from them. I guess when you are a super successful woman, you end up with a target on your back.

I ordered this book in frustration one day. I'm single and my house is 75 years old and you'd think that both living and working at home (I'm a writer), my house wouldn't be that tough to keep neat and organized and functional. Hah. Think again. I struggle with almost epic levels of clutter most of the time and stupid things like not being able to find the right kitchen tools when I want them becomes a daily frustration. Plus, there are all of these silly things that just drive me nuts--like keeping a hardwood floor clean (and getting rid of scratches) or just how to store cleaning supplies so you can actually *find* them (what a concept).

This book is huge, around 750 pages, I think, and it's very well organized. Each section is devoted to a particular room and them delves into that room's contents, everything from furniture to accessories to windows, etc. I won't say that this book is as informal or as cozy as some of Martha's book are, there is a kind of cold tone to some of the writing, but let's face it, when you are putting together 750 pages of information and ideas, there's not a lot of room for chit chat. But there is a ton and a half (almost literally, lol) of info.

This is a great book gift idea for a child in their first apartment or as a house-warming gift (give it to them in a bucket with cleaning supplies--they'll bless your name forever). I keep my copy on the hearth, next to where I watch TV and when commercials come on or TV starts to bore me, I just flip through the book.

By the way, for many years I dated a woman that lived on the same street as Martha in Westport and I never heard a single neighbor say an unkind thing about her--and that house (now sold) always looked just as perfect in photos as it did on TV, etc. A lot of people don't realize this woman rose to wealth and fame from very average suburban NJ circumstances and she built this empire on her own. I think she's a wonderful role model for men and women. And this book is a gem.

Makes SPC easy and accessible to anyone

SPC is one of the most powerful tools available to any organization or workgroup that wants to implement continuous improvement. Unfortunately, it is not widely used outside of manufacturing or companies that are committed to quality. One of the reasons is that is perceived to be difficult to learn. This wonderful book changes that by introducing statistical process controls in a clear, gentle manner.
The book is divided into modules, each of which builds upon the preceding one, and can be used as a training text or as a self-study guide. The first module covers the basics: causes of variation, tools (historgrams, control charts, variable and attribute charts).
Modules 3 and 4 go deeper into the tools, explaining why you would use them, how to use them and how to interpret them. This is the heart of the book.
Machine and process capability, the subject of module 5, can be applied beyond the shop floor. For example, I work as an information technology consultant and was able to apply the knowledge from this module to project estimation and controls, service level measurement and quality assurance processes. This information is also applicable to other areas and will be useful to anyone who works at a company registered as ISO-9000.
Module 5 covers all of the common quality problem-solving tools ranging from brainstorming to scatter diagrams. IT consultants and practitioners will find the sections on cause and effect diagrams and Pareto analysis useful for process improvement for defect identification and removal, and other related objectives.
Elements of a TQM system covered in module 8 may have been better placed in module 1, but it is thorough and a good starting point for anyone who is new to quality.
This book finishes with a module that provides the answers and solutions to practice problems from the preceding modules, which underscores its value as a class test or self-study guide.
I recommend this book to associates who either have never heard of SPC (and there are a lot of them) or think it is beyond their ability to grasp. It is impossible to have a viable, effective program of continuous improvement without SPC. The authors have done a remarkable job of writing a book that lives up to its title by simplifying SPC. As such they have made an important contribution to quality by making this effective tool available to anyone who will take the time to read the book and apply what they learn.

Practical guide that you can put into action right away.

SPC Simplified came along at just the right time. I needed help developing statistical analysis that I could interpret to upper management. I used this text to assist me in constructing my first run charts, variance analysis, error analysis, root cause analysis, brainstorming session and my first Process Cause and Effect Analysis. Great job. A good buy for anyone in Performance Improvement.

Control charts and Six Sigma 101

I was fortunate enough to get to go to Six Sigma Black Belt training lately and better yet, had a great teacher. However, I was not aware of how much I wasn't prepared for the class until I got there. This book certainly explains standard deviation, control charts, capability, etc. in a simple and easy to understand way. More importantly, it shows you the Deming way of doing these things to learn them...by hand and not computer. I believe this will put it in your brain and keep it there. The book has a small section of workable problems at the end of each chapter to help you learn what is being explained, very helpful indeed.
I recommend this book for anyone struggling to understand basic quality principles and process improvement principles. It helps you to collect data, calculate the data, plot the data and analyze the data.
I believe it is also a great teachers manual to help explain things in a way that will be easy to show others. We have a tendency to forget how difficult things are to understand after we understand them. This book can help you teach others with simple examples and good explanations.
Beware, this book and its content can be addicting!
