Good book, bad CD

I used the Mosby book, the Mosby cards, and the Saunders book during my nursing education and lead up to the NCLEX. I found that the cards were by far my favorite for my NCLEX review as the books were too big and had a good deal of information I did not need to review.

However, the books were invaluable for my class exams. I could focus on the topics necessary without the fluff that a regular textbook can sometimes add. In addition as one of my early professors noted, professors get the test questions from somewhere. Usually it’s either from the textbook, which is obvious after the first test, or from an NCLEX review test bank. I often recognized questions from the books or the accompanying CDs on my exams.

Despite both books being helpful, I would advise against purchasing both for two reasons. First, the information is the same. The onset of action of insulins is the same regardless of who wrote/edited a book. It becomes a preference for how the information is presented. I personally liked the Mosby book layout better. Second, both Mosby and Saunders are published by Elsevier. The CD test banks with each book had similar layouts, and I recognized identical questions between the two. But there are key differences between the two program layouts.

The Mosby CD starts with a choice of mode – study, quiz, exam or audio key points. The study mode gives instant feedback and rationales after you submit an answer. Quiz mode allows the user to select areas of concentration and select the number of questions; feedback is provided upon submission of all questions. The exam mode is one of two 265-question comprehensive exams with feedback provided upon completion. Audio key points are lectures summarizing endocrine disorders, fluid and electrolyte balance, impaired skin, infection, neoplastic disorders, neurological system disorders, pain, perioperative care, and teaching and learning. I did not listen to them. Selecting study or exam mode then gives a choice of clinical area (foundations of nursing practice; medical-surgical nursing; mental health nursing; childbearing and women’s health nursing; and child health nursing). Then the user can select categories of client needs, cognitive level, nursing process, and integrated process. The category really only allows the user to select smaller subcategories. If you select all the subcategories, each category has the same number of questions within a clinical area so if you pick a single category and answer all the subcategory questions, you’ll answer all the questions in that clinical area. My biggest problem with the Mosby CD is the rationales. If you get a question wrong, it only gives you rationale on why that answer was wrong. If you want to see the rationale for the correct answer, you need to go back one question, then go forward to reset the question you want, and select the correct answer. This is only possible to do in study mode. Too bad if you’re in quiz or exam mode. Alternate question formats are randomly strewn throughout the question bank.

The Saunders CD starts with a choice of assessment, study, quiz, exam or audio review modes. Assessment mode is a 75-question practice test to help the user determine what to concentrate on. I didn’t use this because I knew what I needed to work on. The study mode gives instant feedback and rationales after you submit an answer. Quiz mode allows the user to answer 10-questions in a select area of concentration; feedback is provided upon submission of all questions. The exam mode is up to 100-questions in the selected concentrations. Audio reviews are lectures summarizing fluids and electrolytes, acid base balance or pharmacology strategies. I did not listen to them. Selecting study, quiz or exam mode then gives a choice of category (cognitive level, client needs, integrated process, content area or alternate item formats). Cognitive level, client needs, and integrated process are similar to the Mosby set up. The content area category was my favorite. You can select one or more subcategories such as “Adult Health: Cardiovascular”, “Adult Health: Renal”, “Child Health: Hematological/Oncological”, “Maternity: Intrapartum”, and “Fundamental Skills: Cultural Diversity”. Alternate Item formats offers subcategories for audio, figure/chart, fill-in-the-blank, multiple response, priority order, and video. The rationales provided reasons for the correct answers and the wrong answers despite what the user chose.

Overall while I preferred the layout of the Mosby book, the Saunders book was good and the Saunders CD was superior. If I only repurchased one, it would definitely be the Saunders.

Wonderful study tool.

I used several different guides to study for my NCLEX-RN. This book was by far the easiest to use, and I passed first try which is everyone's goal!

Well I bought this book when I was 21..... Hard partying and life living excess led to me being slightly overweight and riddle with cellulite..... So I bought this book. The results were amazing!! My figure was amazing and I literally glowed. Was hard work but worth it and became the norm for quite some time. Only needed a two week too up every year or so to maintain. I am now 43..... Thanks to this book which I used exercise wise religiously I have gone on to have 3 children and still blast a 23.5 inch waist. Thrilled is not the word. My muscle memory just pings back. This woman is a legend. But must admit have had an I duke t year so the cellulite is back.....with fury!! But hold on Rosemary I'm comin to get you again. This is my bible. You will not regret. Love it!!!!

Diet Dream Book

I used Rosemary Conley's Inch Loss Plan in South Africa and found it very successful, workable and user friendly. The only difficulty for U.S. readers is that the measurements are metric and the products are British-based foods. Once you've done some European travel and have done some basic conversions, it's not difficult to find American equivalents. Conley's exercises worked well for me, because they start easy, yet at the end of the month I could jog a good distance without losing my breath. Also, she masses the menus at the back, so it's easy to look through and pick your favorite breakfasts, lunches and dinners. If you are tired of your present diet, this is an interesting option. Her pictured exercises are easy to follow.

a new perspective on the old war

The standard mid-20th century narrative explained how WW1 happened: Europe was a tinderbox primed for war; the assassination of an obscure Austrian arch-duke not important in itself, merely the match struck which finally plunged the continent into a war that was waiting to happen; then a quick cut to the military mechanics: who mobilized when and where. Somewhat mystifying and ultimately unsatisfying considering the scope and the horrific after-shock of WW1. I could never settle for "it just happened".

What I liked right away about Christopher Clark's book is that he takes the Sarajevo assassination seriously, he takes the Serbian assassins seriously, he tells us more about that obscure Austrian arch-duke. He devotes the first two chapters of his book to the history of Serbia and its relationship to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. With a few swift strokes he sketches in how the Austro-Hungarian Empire came to be, writing as if the reader knows nothing about central European history and needs to be brought up to speed. He elucidates great power tensions arising from the declining Ottoman Empire; what that decline meant for Russian interests in the Turkish Straits; the effect of that on Russia's relationship with Austro-Hungary.... I could feel myself relaxing into this book right away. Serbs, Russians, Hungarians, Austrians, Bulgarians and Ottoman Turks -- it reminded me of my favorite WW2 novelist Alan Furst who writes about the lesser-known venues of the war. A new perspective on the familiar story, and illuminating because of that.

The particular strength of Clark's history is elucidation of the great power alliance systems of pre-war Europe, starting in the 1890's. Providing a very smooth introductory overview of the calculations of the great powers, Clark embodies that rare blend of competent professional and talented teacher guiding the novice through the intricacies of a grandmaster chess game. A hard act to pull off but Clark makes it look easy. For long stretches his history reads like a bestselling novel of international intrigue with the writing geared well at the level of the general reader who has a strong interest in the subject. For the most part you don't need to be a history major or a WW1 buff to read the book easily, although it is densely written and requires concentration. You might get badly bogged down, as I did, slogging through the diplomatic intricacies of the Balkan Wars but this is about the only price to be paid for a superb understanding of the origins of WW1.

The "sleepwalkers" metaphor is somewhat lame. Sleepwalking into a general European war isn't much of an improvement over "Europe was a tinderbox waiting for the match to be struck". But the text belies the title. Clark gives sleepwalking lip service but he fails to make the case. Instead he clearly demonstrates two great powers, neither of them Germany, actively promoting a general European war -- because only in that milieu can each one hope to achieve its own particular "interests". It is possible that with 'sleepwalking' Clark is taking a gentlemanly step back from his powerful narrative. If history is the story of the winning side, this is an authoritative and persuasive rebuttal.

Where most WW1 historians begin with the mobilizations -- at that time acts of war in themselves -- Clark ends with the mobilizations. His history deals with the individuals who unleashed those armies, often after overcoming political opposition within their own governments. The most poignant moment in this entire convoluted story is when Tsar Nicholas II tries to call off the general mobilization: "I will not be responsible for a monstrous slaughter!" He has received a telegram from his cousin. The German Kaiser is not inclined to war if it can be avoided: "military measures on the part of Russia could be looked upon by Austria as threatening, would precipitate a calamity we both wish to avoid." A big "what-if" moment there, and a reflection on how real-life monarchs can be somewhat like chess kings -- weak pieces when it comes to aggressive combinations. The Tsar's order to cancel the mobilization lasted only 24 hours, he was prevailed upon by his government ministers and signed the fateful order.

Past (and future?) history at it's finest!

Edmund Burke is credited with the quote, "Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it." Mark Twain amended that to, "History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes." If there's truth in this thought, it's a dismal prophecy for our future since our past is a litany of war, war, and more war. Our best hope for avoiding that dismal future is in books like The Sleepwalkers by Cambridge University based historian Christopher Clark.

Clark is the most recent book to explain what happened to make the entire world go to war for the first time (but very regrettably, not the last). It's an ambitious goal. As Clark writes in the first paragraph of the introduction, World War I "has spawned an historical literature of unparalleled size, sophistication and moral intensity." Clark notes that for the century that has passed since the war, both historians and the countries that fought the war have churned out thousands and thousands of pages of documents to answer that precise question. It is a major credit to Clark that he has turned this tsunami of words into a clear and convincing account.

The first and most important lesson to be absorbed from Clark's book is that every nation and every leader involved before World War I are jointly responsible for starting the war. Article 231 of the Treaty of Versailles that ended the war - the "War Guilt Clause" - gave total and exclusive blame to the German Empire. Clark utterly destroys that answer by documenting the buildup to the war from the point of view of each of the participants showing how every one of them played their own part in creating the circumstances that resulted in war. After documenting all this, the reader understands that the war was a result of seeing events strictly from a national point of view and the utter failure to understand that a world war was made possible for the first time because for the first time, mankind was now occupying a single world. The result of John Donne's insight, "No man is an island entire of itself" had made it impossible for a purely local war to be waged.

And yet, we continue. In Serbia, the original flashpoint of World War I, a nationalist who defends the actions of ethnic Serb leaders during the 1992-95 war in Bosnia just won a convincing election victory and will lead that unhappy country into the future now. In Britain, they have rejected fellowship in common with the rest of Europe. I will avoid even commenting on what has happened here in America.

Clark's excellent book won't get the attention it deserves. It will be digested and discussed by the same cast of characters while the vast, vast majority read the latest fiction on the bestseller list ... if they read at all. I don't like our chances of avoiding the dismal future that will result from not understanding why the world went to war in 1914.

Excellent read for history buffs, EVERY option is explored

In the very last sentence of the book, Christopher Clark explains his title: "In this sense, the protagonists of 1914 were sleepwalkers, watchful but unseeing.....blind to the reality of the horror they were about to bring into the world." Note that I have abridged this solitary sentence. I did not find Clark to be as readable as I would have liked for a 562 page history of the causes of WWl; hence four stars. I had read Tuchman's "Guns of August" just a few weeks earlier, and came away from that book overwhelmed by the events of the first month of the War, yet unclear as to why it happened. In hindsight, I would have preferred reading Clark's book first. Later this year I intend to read "With Our Backs to the Wall" (about the War during 1918, following three years of trench battles), and finally "Paris 1919".

The causes and events leading to the outbreak of the War are indeed complex. Many countries were involved, major players (Germany, Russia, France, England, Austria-Hungary) and less major ones (the Balkans, Belgium, Italy, Turkey). European Wars were not a rarity, though they generally lasted for less than a year, sometimes only a few months. Many countries were ruled by monarchies, and the key player of the moment could be the king, prime minister, Foreign Minister, War Minister or an Ambassador - or some combination. And in some cases, the scorecard kept changing, rapidly. There were ententes, detentes, demarches, and inceptions. And Alliances. Most of the key players were involved in at least two alliances; I was particularly struck by how tenuous some of these alliances were as they became uncomfortable for some participants as events changed. I was amazed how dismissive government officials could be of time honored agreements that suddenly dictate unforeseen and costly entanglements. So part of the chess game became guessing how truly committed potential opponents (and partners) would be to alliances, formal and less formal.

Most of us know the simple answer to the question posed here - the assassination of Austria's Archduke. But where? by whom? and where was he from? But most importantly why? Clark begins his story with a few paragraphs on the event but then dives backwards into events leading up to that moment. 367 pages later, we now are treated to a more detailed, minute by minute account of the assassination, in reality a quasi black-comedy horror story. And then the chess game continues but at a much faster pace - incredibly WWl will be well underway in only 6 weeks. A war which will last four years and take twenty million lives. There were many moments in those six weeks when "if only" had truly occurred, war could have been paused at a minimum. Or perhaps limited to a local affair instead of a global one. Clark details all the reasons (and then some) why it did happen. Recommended.
