Building a Scalable Data Warehouse with Data Vault 2.0, by Dan Linstedt, Michael Olschimke

The Data Vault was invented by Dan Linstedt at the U.S. Department of Defense, and the standard has been successfully applied to data warehousing projects at organizations of different sizes, from small to large-size corporations. Due to its simplified design, which is adapted from nature, the Data Vault 2.0 standard helps prevent typical data warehousing failures.

"Building a Scalable Data Warehouse" covers everything one needs to know to create a scalable data warehouse end to end, including a presentation of the Data Vault modeling technique, which provides the foundations to create a technical data warehouse layer. The book discusses how to build the data warehouse incrementally using the agile Data Vault 2.0 methodology. In addition, readers will learn how to create the input layer (the stage layer) and the presentation layer (data mart) of the Data Vault 2.0 architecture including implementation best practices. Drawing upon years of practical experience and using numerous examples and an easy to understand framework, Dan Linstedt and Michael Olschimke discuss:

  • How to load each layer using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), including automation of the Data Vault loading processes.
  • Important data warehouse technologies and practices.
  • Data Quality Services (DQS) and Master Data Services (MDS) in the context of the Data Vault architecture.
  • Provides a complete introduction to data warehousing, applications, and the business context so readers can get-up and running fast
  • Explains theoretical concepts and provides hands-on instruction on how to build and implement a data warehouse
  • Demystifies data vault modeling with beginning, intermediate, and advanced techniques
  • Discusses the advantages of the data vault approach over other techniques, also including the latest updates to Data Vault 2.0 and multiple improvements to Data Vault 1.0

Comprehensive Data Vault 2.0 reference manual
By M. Ferle
This book fills a huge void in Data Vault 2.0 resources. It covers everything about data vault, including data modeling, ETL processing, error handling, metadata, data quality and more, all explained in depth with sufficient examples that can be immediately put to use. Every question that I could think of relating to data vault is covered in the book. It is an excellent reference manual to have on hand while doing data vault implementations.

That said, I gave the book only four stars because there is always room for improvement. I was disappointed after reading Chapter 3, about the Data Vault 2.0 methodology. It appears that the authors threw in a bunch of various methodologies, frameworks, best practices and approaches without clearly explaining how all these parts fit together into a cohesive methodology.

The authors appear out of their depth in the project management space. They incorrectly apply the term PMP (Project Management Professional, a certification from the Project Management Institute) as a best practice. What they probably meant is that the project management aspect of the Data Vault 2.0 methodology is taken from the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), a project management standard issued by the Project Management Institute.

I also don’t see why the authors included Scrum in the mix. The explanation of how Scrum is applied in mini-waterfall sprints is confusing and contradicting. For example, it is not clear how the Scrum roles such as scrum master and product owner translate into the mini-waterfall sprints. They state that Scrum is used for team coordination/team organization and that the team is self-organized while at the same time they designate the project manager as the person who plans the tasks within a mini-waterfall sprint. It is contradicting that on one hand the product owner participates in the sprints on a daily basis while on the other hand there is no user involvement during the development part of a sprint. In my opinion it would have been better to forget Scrum and just use the Agile Manifesto and its principles in order to bring agile thinking into the Data Vault 2.0 methodology.

Not your daddy's data warehouse!
By Kent Graziano
Full disclosure: I am a huge Data Vault fan and did help with the earlier books (but not this one). This is the Data Vault book everyone has been clamoring for for years. We finally have a book that not only teaches you how to model a Data Vault but also shows you how to load data into a DV as well as how to build Information Marts on top of it to pull the data out for reporting. This book covers the full life cycle of developing an enterprise data warehouse in an agile manner using the Data Vault method. And to top it off, this book has all the details for the enhancements that came with Data Vault 2.0. This book is to Data Vault what Dr. Kimball's Data Warehouse Lifecycle book was to dimensional modeling. If oyu can only buy on data warehouse book this year - get this one.

The most detailed and complete data vault book ever written!
By Number2
Finally, a Data Vault book that has everything you need from end-to-end to build a data vault warehouse from the ground up!

I've read the Supercharge Your Data Warehouse book from Dan, I've read all of Hans Hultgren's books, I've read and watched DV fundamentals training material, and I never really felt like I fully understood everything end to end. I grasped the big picture and was excited about the possibilities, but working alone after all of that I felt like I still didn't really have the tools I needed to complete a data vault on my own. With this book, I finally do!

This book takes you from concepts to implementation, from beginning to end. There are actual screen shots of how to create databases, what indexes to put on your vault tables, how to create an SSIS package, TSQL code, Master Data Services and Data Quality Services examples, there's MDX code, all of it. And it's not just details to get you to a data vault and then leaving you on your own to figure out the info marts, this takes you all the way to putting data in your dimension and fact tables.

All in all, this is the most complete Data Vault book that's ever been created and it's a fantastic value for the money. It's like 684 pages. Once I started, it was literally 8 hours a day for 4-5 days of plowing through all the information and going back and re-reading and getting more details out of it before I was done. It's not a book you can just flip through in a couple of hours. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone interested in data vault or data warehousing in general.

Review

"Introducing Delphi Programming turned out to be outstanding: it begins where I needed to begin: it progresses smoothly from task to task; it is built around sets of practical exercises and practice activities; explanations are clear and well organized. It is the best "how to" book of any type that I have ever used.--Pat Byrd, Department of Applied Linguistics & ESL, Georgia State University

Oldie but Goodie
By Jason Enochs
Modern colleges have Computer Science departments that utilize modern languages but if you're over 40, you probably learned Pascal in college and are comfortable diving straight into Delphi. On the other hand, if you didn't grow up watching Hee Haw and Little House on the Prairie, you probably need to start with the basics.

Most online tutorials are VERY outdated and assume you already know some Pascal. Same with most books. Nick Hodges published a great Delphi book in 2014 that covers advanced topics like unit testing, design patterns, and dependency injection but his book will not teach you Delphi.

That brings me to this overpriced book. The first thing I noticed was that it was published in 2005 (eye roll). Then I noticed the reviews were good and one was written in 2013. Furthermore, the reviews here showed the book was for beginners. I struggled with my decision because I wasn't sure if it would apply to the current IDE (XE6) and it's very expensive. After reading it, I'm convinced that it helped. The book is accurate and well written. This book targets people with ZERO programming experience. This book teaches basic programming (very basic) using Delphi. I'm an experienced Software Developer with a Computer Science degree (dated 2010 not 1990) and used the book to quickly familiarize myself with the Delphi IDE and language syntax. For some reason, you can't view the table of contents so here it is:

CHAPTER 1 Intro to visual programming
CHAPTER 2 Programming with visual components
CHAPTER 3 String variables
CHAPTER 4 Using numbers
CHAPTER 5 Conditional execution
CHAPTER 6 Nested and multiple conditions
CHAPTER 7 Repetition
CHAPTER 8 Arrays and indexes
CHAPTER 9 Menus and actions
CHAPTER 10 Events and parameters
CHAPTER 11 Methods and parameters
CHAPTER 12 Procedures and parameters
CHAPTER 13 Functions and exceptions
CHAPTER 14 Debugging and testing
CHAPTER 15 Intro to database programming
CHAPTER 16 Database programming using data modules and multiple forms
CHAPTER 17 Reporting: Using Rave reports
CHAPTER 18 Investigating objects

....note there's no VCL/FMX coverage. This is purely an introductory text. By 'introductory' I mean it couldn't be more basic. A 5th grader could learn programming with this book. I don't mean that in a bad way, just be aware. The first two chapters are more about learning the IDE than Delphi. If you're an experienced programmer that's already familiar with the Embarcadero IDE and simply need to learn Delphi, you may want to skip this book and go straight into 'XE2 Foundations' by Chris Rolliston. Unlike this book, 'XE2 Foundations' is an introduction to Delphi that assumes you've seen a computer before. If you do start with this book, XE2 Foundations is a good follow-up.

One minor complaint is that this book goes out of its way not to mention memory management. If you told me to write a 550 page introductory programming book without using the word 'memory' a single time I would have said, "impossible!" None of the examples require explicit freeing of memory but the book aims to be an introduction to programming so something as important as memory management should have at least been given a few paragraphs in chapter one.

This is the fourth edition and has been reprinted 10 times! The last printing was in 2013. The exercises in the book use Borland's (now Embarcadero) Delphi 7 IDE and show the changes made to Delphi 8. We had to learn Delphi fast because our office started collaborating on a development project written in Delphi. I had never written a single line of Delphi code nor had I ever used a Borland/Embarcadero IDE. The book's diagrams showing the older IDE layout aren't radically different from the current version (currently XE6). If you're using Delphi 7 or later (2002 - 2014), you shouldn't have a problem working through the examples except for Chapter 17 (Reporting). Chapter 17 assumes you have access to RAVE Reports (Delphi 8 installation disk) but XE6 comes with Fast Reports and they are NOT similar. After reading this book, I'm more efficient and productive using Embarcadero's IDE. Experienced programmers will finish the book quickly while becoming familiar with the IDE and basic Delphi syntax. Beginners will learn some programming basics using Delphi.

I enjoyed the book but minus one star for being outdated and overpriced.

The best introduction to Delphi programming
By Antonio Luiz de Carvalho
An objective introduction to Pascal language and Delphi IDE. The tuition, step by step, is very easy to follow and let you learn the basics of this programming software. A have lots of books about Delphi, but this is the only one I found to start learning, for sure. Very well written. After reading this one, you can choose a more advanced one.

Great Book!
By Shonuf
I don't write reviews as I rarely have time to formulate a good one. But this book is such a great introduction to the Object Pascal programming language and the Delphi IDE that I felt like I owed it to the writers to leave a review.

If you are interested in learning delphi and have never programmed before then this is the book for you!

Fantastic arrangements!
By Delta Girl
This book is fantastic! It has some of the most authentic gospel music arrangements that I have encountered. I grew up in the Baptist church and the arrangements are just like the ones that the musicians played. I am classically trained and could not get the hang of playing gospel music. I also could not find teachers who could transmit the style in a way that I could understand. I highly recommend this book if you want to play some of the gospel standards in the "traditional gospel style".

Freely I Served: The Memoir of the Commander, 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade 1941-1944, by Major-General Stanislaw Sosabowski

Freely I Served is the gripping memoir of Stanislaw Sosabowski who became one of the most senior Polish commanders during the Second World War.

After seeing service with the Austrian Army in World War I, the author joined the newly created Polish Army in 1918. By September 1939 he was commanding 21st Infantry Regiment in the Battle of Warsaw against overwhelming German forces. Taken prisoner, he made a daring escape to join the Polish Army in France before evacuating to England together with 3,000 fellow countrymen.

In 1941 he formed the First Polish Independent Parachute Brigade which he trained and commanded for the next three
years. Although created for the liberation of Poland, the Brigade, led by the author, parachuted into Arnhem in September 1944 and fought with great courage. Sosabowski provides a unique insight into this ill-fated operation. At the time his frank style and determined views resulted in confrontations with his British senior officers, 'Boy' Browning in particular, and he was forced to resign. Many felt that he was made a scapegoat.

While Freely I Served records the author's wartime experiences, it is more than a memoir. The Author, ever a true patriot, intended it to be a tribute to the many brave Polish soldiers who fought to regain their country from Nazi occupation and, in this aim, he undoubtedly succeeds. Readers will find it an inspiring and revealing account.

More than Market-Garden
By Jay F. Sterling
As an amateur student of Market-Garden, I looked forward to reading this memoir. Gen. Sosabowski does a good job of telling the story of the Polish Brigade's role but I really enjoyed this memoir for the rest of his story. Well worth reading for his story of the defense of Poland in 1939 and his escape to continue the fight.

Threshold Concepts in Women’s and Gender Studies: Ways of Seeing, Thinking, and Knowing, by Christie Launius, Holly Hassel

Threshold Concepts in Women’s and Gender Studies: Ways of Seeing, Thinking, and Knowing is a textbook designed primarily for introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies courses with the intent of providing both a skills- and concept-based foundation in the field. The text is driven by a single key question: "What are the ways of thinking, seeing, and knowing that characterize women’s and gender studies and are valued by its practitioners?" Rather than taking a topical approach, Threshold Concepts in Women’s and Gender Studies develops the key concepts and ways of thinking that students need in order to develop a deep understanding and to approach material like feminist scholars do, across disciplines. This book illustrates four of the most critical concepts in women’s and gender studies: the social construction of gender; privilege and oppression; intersectionality; and feminist praxis, and grounds these concepts in multiple illustrations.

Review

Threshold Concepts in Women’s and Gender Studies is an accessible and innovative textbook that introduces students to foundational concepts within the field by using cutting-edge feminist scholarship and relevant examples from current events, everyday life, and popular culture. The structure of the text encourages students to internalize these concepts and produce new ways of seeing, thinking, and knowing, as the title promises. This book is a treasure for students and professors alike.

-Angela Fitzpatrick, Women's and Gender Studies, Coastal Carolina University

A book of this kind has long been needed within women’s and gender studies. Students and teachers will be energized by its fresh approach, which emphasizes key concepts and broad methodologies, equipping students with the tools necessary to do feminist cultural analysis. I applaud the authors for their pedagogical innovation.

- Dr. Desiree Henderson, English, University of Texas Arlington

Every page illustrates that the book is a response to the field’s signature pedagogies, informed by pedagogical content knowledge, grounded in current research on learning, and focused on helping students learn to do the work of feminist scholars. With this one book, teaching and learning in WGS has taken five steps forward.

―Nancy Chick, English, Vanderbilt University

In Threshold Concepts in Women’s and Gender Studies, Christie Launius and Holly Hassel make a striking contribution to the ways in which we teach introductory courses in Women’s and Gender Studies. Avoiding the topic-based approach to focus instead on foundational concepts, their unique text combines clear articulation of complex ideas with topical examples and applications, providing a critical lens through which students might examine, understand, and affect the world around them. Accessible to students for its jargon-free style and logical structure in which each concept builds upon the next, the text will also be invaluable for instructors, in particular those who may (as many of us do) lack formal training in the field. Instructors will find especially helpful the authors’ careful attention to how students learn; each chapter’s inclusion of learning roadblocks, questions for evaluations of prior knowledge, and discussion/writing prompts serves to position learning as an active and engaged process. In addition, as a text and not a reader, Threshold Concepts offers a practical solution to the rising cost of textbooks by allowing instructors to choose their own supplementary readings. I am eager to use this book in my own WGST classroom and plan to recommend it enthusiastically to my colleagues!

-Shawn Lisa Maurer, English and former Director of Women’s and Gender Studies, College of the Holy Cross

Bouchon (The Thomas Keller Library), by Thomas Keller

Thomas Keller, chef/proprieter of Napa Valley's French Laundry, is passionate about bistro cooking. He believes fervently that the real art of cooking lies in elevating to excellence the simplest ingredients; that bistro cooking embodies at once a culinary ethos of generosity, economy, and simplicity; that the techniques at its foundation are profound, and the recipes at its heart have a powerful ability to nourish and please.

So enamored is he of this older, more casual type of cooking that he opened the restaurant Bouchon, right next door to the French Laundry, so he could satisfy a craving for a perfectly made quiche, or a gratined onion soup, or a simple but irresistible roasted chicken. Now Bouchon, the cookbook, embodies this cuisine in all its sublime simplicity.

But let's begin at the real beginning. For Keller, great cooking is all about the virtue of process and attention to detail. Even in the humblest dish, the extra thought is evident, which is why this food tastes so amazing: The onions for the onion soup are caramelized for five hours; lamb cheeks are used for the navarin; basic but essential refinements every step of the way make for the cleanest flavors, the brightest vegetables, the perfect balance—whether of fat to acid for a vinaigrette, of egg to liquid for a custard, of salt to meat for a duck confit.

Because versatility as a cook is achieved through learning foundations, Keller and Bouchon executive chef Jeff Cerciello illuminate all the key points of technique along the way: how a two-inch ring makes for a perfect quiche; how to recognize the right hazelnut brown for a brown butter sauce; how far to caramelize sugar for different uses.

But learning and refinement aside—oh those recipes! Steamed mussels with saffron, bourride, trout grenobloise with its parsley, lemon, and croutons; steak frites, beef bourguignon, chicken in the pot—all exquisitely crafted. And those immortal desserts: the tarte Tatin, the chocolate mousse, the lemon tart, the profiteroles with chocolate sauce. In Bouchon, you get to experience them in impeccably realized form.

This is a book to cherish, with its alluring mix of recipes and the author's knowledge, warmth, and wit: "I find this a hopeful time for the pig," says Keller about our yearning for the flavor that has been bred out of pork. So let your imagination transport you back to the burnished warmth of an old-fashioned French bistro, pull up a stool to the zinc bar or slide into a banquette, and treat yourself to truly great preparations that have not just withstood the vagaries of fashion, but have improved with time. Welcome to Bouchon.

Amazon.com Review
Bouchon, chef Thomas Keller's bistro cookbook, offers 180-plus recipes from his eponymous restaurants--there are two. Readers perusing the near-prosciutto-size book will be dazzled, first, by its great looks (there are many beautiful photos), then, perhaps, wonder why so many of its typically homey bistro dishes are so fussy to prepare. Why, for example, must the onions for onion soup be caramelized for five hours, or the muscles of a leg of lamb separated so that each can be cooked to an exact, presumably optimal, temperature.

They should, however, trust this justly celebrated chef, whose sometimes-painstaking refinements reflect a better way. Apart from the excellence of the dishes, the reason to own Bouchon is to discover the richness of Keller's technical understanding. Readers learn, for example, not to baste chicken while it roasts, which creates skin-softening moisture, and to allow the base for crme caramel to sit before baking, thus permitting its flavors to deepen. Keller's sensitivity to ingredients and their composition is profound; and he and his collaborators have presented it so deftly that one finds oneself engrossed again and again. Whether Keller is talking about vinaigrettes (in their balance of fat, acid, and saltines, the perfect sauce) vegetable glazing, or the creation of brown butter, his insights are fascinating.

The dishes cover a wide range of courses, and include the traditional--poule au pot, veal roast, pommes frites, and so on--and the "new," such as Gnocchi with Summer Vegetables, Skate with Fennel-Onion Confit and Tapenade Sauce, and Grandma Sheila's Cheesecake Tart with Huckleberries. All are, as the French might say, impeccable--and can be accomplished by anyone willing to take the time to do so. Like his cooking, Bouchon is a sui generis treat. --Arthur Boehm

From Publishers Weekly
Keller's restaurant Bouchon, in Napa Valley, Calif., is modeled after Parisian bistros and serves simple yet sumptuous fare. This graceful ode to bistro cooking emphasizes that although in America, "bistro" is synonymous with "casual," the food is prepared with "precision of technique brought to bear on ordinary ingredients." Close-up photos of signature dishes are alluring, and several action shots of food preparation may help readers refine their techniques. The book's sections progress from "First Impressions" (hors d'oeuvres and more) to "Anytime" dishes (soups, salads, quiches) to appetizers, entres and desserts. Thoughtful introductions to each recipe grouping explain Keller's experiences with the featured dishes; sidebars on everything from oil to onions provide insight and useful tidbits. A "Basics" chapter attempts to further demystify the foundations of bistro cooking (it's built on staples like confit, stock and aioli), and a "Sources" section directs readers to bistro-appropriate tools and specialty foods. Of course, as any chef knows, food is as much about experience, memory and emotion as it is about flavor and presentation. Especially bistro food, Keller says, which retains the "spirit of the original bistro, the spirit of embracing you... restoring you and making you happy." This appealing book promises to do the same. From Booklist
Keller holds the chef-of-the-moment title. It's still nearly impossible to book a table in his renowned French Laundry restaurant in rural California even though the chef himself has largely forsaken the scene to open an eagerly awaited luxe Manhattan eatery. This new cookbook takes its title from Keller's less expensive bistro next door to his California location. At Bouchon he and his kitchen staff concentrate on bistro classics: onion soup, roast chicken, tarte tatin. Onion soup relies on sound beef stock and well-caramelized onions. For his roast chicken, Keller looks for a farm-raised bird, properly cleaned and dried with a bit of butter, salt, and pepper. Unlike other chefs, Keller opts for trussing the chicken for even cooking and easy handling. He extols the French art of potted meats, but offers just a few pates. Pigs' feet put in an appearance and add their rich rustic savor to the menu. Other recipes for salads, vegetables, and desserts follow a similar pattern of exquisite ingredients simply prepared. Masterful Reference on Bistro Recipes. Highly Recommended
By B. Marold
Expectations for Thomas Keller's new book `Bouchon' are very high, and I firmly believe he has exceeded them. The book sets new standards for the foodie coffee table fare as well as confirming Keller's reputation as one of the country's foremost culinary artists. The book is larger, heavier, and better than his first cookbook on the cuisine of his flagship French Laundry. There are several things that make this an excellent book for all people who love to cook.

First, the book is a superior reference work of bistro dishes and how to prepare them. It is certainly not complete, but then I think no cookbook in the world will ever be a complete reference to any subject, as every culinary subject changes daily due to changes in provisions, historical research, and the enormous variety in how even one dish is made from place to place. For example, both `Bouchon' and Tony Bourdain's recent book on bistro recipes from Les Halle has five (5) dishes containing mussels, yet no two are the same dish. For all of the virtues of Bourdain's book, Keller's book is superior as a reference to the overall style of cooking if only because he and his editors rigorously give both French and English names to all dishes.

Second, as amazing as it is to say this, lots of dishes in `Bouchon' are actually easy to make. The initial roast chicken recipe is literally not much more complicated than carefully prepping the carcass and sticking it into the oven. Keller does not even baste the beast and it is done within an hour (for a 3-pound bird). And, all this with the cachet of making a Thomas Keller recipe. Almost all the salads and `openers' dishes are equally as simple, as long as you have high quality ingredients.

Third, the pantry chapter of recipes is a more complete reference for making stocks and other sauce bases than I have seen anywhere else. My former gold standard for stockmaking recipes was in `The Zuni Caf Cookbook' by Judy Rodgers. This is better by giving recipes that are just as good, better written, and a more complete collection of stocks than I have seen anywhere else. The only thing I would possibly add to this chapter would be a recipe for a court bouillon. But, the recipe does appear in the book as a part of the recipe for a shellfish platter. Other sauces such as a mignonette sauce and a cocktail sauce also appear `in situ' along with appropriate dishes with which they are used.

Fourth, the book is simply packed with important culinary techniques. Most of these are not the sort of thing which will find their way to the quick tips pages of `Cooks Illustrated' or `Gourmet' as they are not shortcuts, but more painstaking ways to improve what is probably already an excellent dish. One dramatic example is Keller's twist on braising where he segregates his flavoring vegetables at the bottom of the Dutch oven under a layer of cheesecloth before adding the meat and the broth. In this way, it becomes very easy to remove the finished meat from the veg and retrieve the broth with little or no odd floating bits of celery leaf or thyme branch. A more simple technique is the recommendation to transfer finished stock to the filtering device with a ladle rather than simply pouring the stuff into the chinois. The force of the uncontrolled flow will force some unwanted particles into the filtered stock. It is all about little details piled up upon one another, which separates good from great cooking.

Fifth, Keller's interpretation of bistro cooking is uncompromising. One dramatic example of this is his claim that America has forgotten how to make a proper quiche, if it ever did know in the first place. The cardinal sin is to make a quiche in a pie pan. This is no surprise, as Julia Child in `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' gives the same warning. What is more surprising is that while most Americans probably use a tart pan with sides of no more than an inch and Child recommends a flan or cake pan with sides up to 11/2 inches, Keller states that you need a 2 inch tall pan to make a proper quiche. A more subtle difference is in his technique for preparing his pate brisee. Virtually every pie crust recipes I have ever seen calls for cutting in butter to leave lentil-sized bits of butter in the mix. Keller insists this is a mistake for a quiche with a wet custard filling, as the pockets of butter create weaknesses in the dough that may break through before the custard filling has firmed up.

Although the book contains many simple recipes, there are also many classic recipes such as boeuf bourguignon, which are literally essays in classic French cooking. Tony Bourdain's recipe for boeuf bourguignon requires 10 ingredients and two concise paragraphs to describe the method. Keller's recipe calls for 43 ingredients in 5 different component preparations, not including the veal stock preparation. This recipe is the poster boy for Keller's take on bistro cooking, which is technique and constant refinement by filtering, skimming, and straining. While the authors have been painstaking in translating the professional's practiced eye and nose into English, this cooking is still about constant attention to the state of the dish as it cooks, and of recognizing the right time to move from one stage to the other. It is this dish where if Bourdain did it at the French Laundry his way, he would be fired on the spot.

This book is so large that it will probably be unwieldy to cook from in the kitchen. Open, it is large than two of my cutting boards together. Still, I cannot overstate how valuable this book is to someone who loves to cook and to read about cooking.

Very highly recommended.

This is my favorite cookbook by a mile or two
By doc
This is my favorite cookbook by a mile or two. Sure, the recipes for "simple" and traditional cuisine are a bit more complex than one might desire (I personally like the complexity and detail in the recipes), but that is the genius of this work...the final products are sensational and exactly as described (and expected). A masterpiece! To think that bistro food is basically peasant food makes this volume that much more special.

The book itself is physically beautiful, an impressive achievement
By H L Poteet
For those for whom French cooking of any type is important, Thomas Keller's Bouchon is a revelation. It is a new introduction to taking essentially ordinary food to extraordinary heights. The book itself is physically beautiful, an impressive achievement, but the best part is the way it introduces us to new insights and techniques to make us better cooks.
