This book is a great read for any designer with the balls to be brash and take chances. The story of Snask's early days. Passionately going after what they want and pushing their way in by staying humble and showing they have the balls to do it. It's just inspiring and hilarious....so just buy it!

It’s deliciously snasky!

I don’t usually do things like this but when you come across a book so profoundly down-to-earth, funny and inspiring, you can’t help but tell people about it. Today, that is you. So take 5 minutes out of your day, go grab a coffee, and get comfy’n’stuff.

Written by Stockholm based design agency SNASK, Make Enemies & Gain Fans is a collection of the struggles during the “Dog Years”, inspirational tips’n’advice and hilarious anecdotes, all packed together in a deceivingly innocent pink and gold book.

This book is not for the faint-hearted. There is no room for “good” work or any form of mediocrity in the minds of Fredrik �st and Magnus Berg. Either go hard or go home! Design students and professionals alike need to take notice to the words in this book. Be bold, be vibrant and be ballsy (Not necessarily in that order). People are more likely to notice you. Then again, Magnus is constantly referred to as “Pussy” throughout the book so you might be fine.

SNASK are here to show the world that there is no one-way of doing business. These are the guys who have gone to talks with a rock band, have held and DJ’d their own club nights and dressed up as Steve Irwin to deliver a pitch. Some things have worked, and others, not so much. But what matters is that they have done everything completely different, in true hipster fashion.

A very easy, addictive read for any “creative” who wants to make enemies, gain fans and have fun while doing it. Get the book. You will not regret it. It’s deliciously snasky!

Great Cover, Good Book

Be clear- this book gets a five-star review for the same reason I purchased it- its amazing cover. Snask is a well-regarded design and branding firm based in Stockholm, Sweden; their signature gold/pinking and bold thinking have served them well in the past and are in full effect here. The striking design and title have attracted interest from others each time I've read it in coffee shops, which was twice, and a target-rich environment for design-minded creatives to be sure, but still an impressive response rate.

The title isn't prefaced with a "How to..." for a reason. It's a declarative statement, not the name of a step-by-step manual. You won't learn how to set type or do business the Snask way. If anything, my takeaway was that the Snask way is just that -theirs- and that creatives should, you know, create their own way in the world.

The book is a short, funny, breezy read written over a long weekend by the firm's founders (accompanied by a student-written case study giving an outsiders' perspective on the studio). It's not particularly challenging thematically, either. I imagine the target reader won't glean much new information from ME&GF, but will surely be inspired by Freddie & Magnus and the work they present throughout the tome to go out and create without overthinking it.

Its thoroughness is its strength - and its weakness

"Protocols: Handbook for the Female Slave" is exactly what the title says - a protocol manual. Specifically, it is Dr. Robert Rubel's protocol manual, detailing what he expects of his own slave. Although Rubel has written an Introduction and inserted numerous paragraphs of commentary into the main text to elaborate upon certain topics for the reader's benefit, it's important to remember that this book was written essentially for an audience of one. "There are as many ways of approaching an M/s relationship as there are people practicing these activities," Rubel writes. Would-be Masters who read this book may pick up a few good ideas, but they won't find any shortcuts here around the hard work of defining for themselves what the M/s relationship means and what sort of behavior they require in a slave. Likewise, it would be silly for an aspiring slave to read this book, take it to heart, and conclude she knows everything she needs to know to enter service - unless she's planning to petition Dr. Rubel.

What makes "Protocols" a valuable addition to the M/s literature has much less to do with its specific content than with its structure, its format, its simple existence. It's 150 pages of object lesson: there are plenty of books out there that talk about the concept of protocol, but here we see that concept made manifest. The purpose is not to tell the reader what his or her own system of protocols should be, but to give the reader a deep understanding of their meaning and purpose. Outside of those basic principles of etiquette which are more or less universal in the BDSM community, slave protocols are by their nature inherently idiosyncratic: it is the slave's duty to serve her Master according to his specific desires, not to be amorphously and generically pleasing. As with any other intimate interpersonal relationship, the concrete examples of others are at the same time brilliantly illuminating and nearly irrelevant.

The greatest virtue of "Protocols" is Rubel's seamless weaving together of theory and practice, allowing the abstract and the concrete to enhance each other from within. We appreciate the importance of protocols all the more when provided with examples of how they enhance the day-to-day existence of the author and his slave, and long lists of behavioral requirements that might otherwise seem dull and irrelevant suddenly seem quite special when we turn our attention to their purpose.

Masters looking to define or clarify their own system of protocol may well find this manual to be a valuable source of inspiration. Although it's probably too idiosyncratic to serve as a specific pattern or outline, its thoroughness will invite readers to consider their preferences in areas they might otherwise not have considered. Readers may well choose to borrow, or adapt to their own purposes, many of Rubel's protocols in the areas of communication and general behavior. Novice Masters and/or slaves interested in becoming involved with the larger BDSM community will find Rubel's chapter on "Social Issues" especially worthy of consideration as they prepare to present themselves to others in the context of their relationship, although they should be sure to familiarize themselves with the basics of general BDSM etiquette first. Although Rubel's commentary seems to be intended mostly for other Masters, this book should prove interesting and valuable reading to the novice would-be slave as well, helping her think clearly through the fantasies to understand what the calling to a life of consensual slavery really entails.

There's so much that's valuable in this book, but at times the thoroughness and detail that make it such an excellent object lesson make it painfully tedious to actually read. I couldn't help thinking it might have been more beneficial had Rubel trimmed down his own manual and published it either along with some other protocol manuals reflecting different approaches to M/s, or as part of a larger work dealing more with the practical realities of the M/s lifestyle. Rubel has a fancy-dining fetish, and one long chapter, comprising nearly a third of the book's content, details the elaborate dinners he likes to have in his home several times a week, dinners the author admits are "so stylized, I have prepared a handout that serves as a Guide to Guests." That's all perfectly well and good for him, but readers who don't share his fetish may find it hard to keep a straight face. This is a man who, without any sense of irony, uses the term "informal meal" to refer to a dinner at which the dessert fork and/or spoon are included in the place setting, everyone stays seated during the toast, and the slave brings two plates to the table at a time in her ungloved hands (in contrast to a "formal meal," at which the dessert fork and/or spoon would be brought in on the dessert plate, guests stand for the toast, and the slave wears gloves to bring out one plate at a time). Rubel has instructions, not only for his slave but for his guests, about the correct way to lay one's napkin in one's lap and the proper side from which to get into or out of one's chair. My point is not to ridicule Rubel's fetish - I've long been intrigued myself by the thought of attending a formal (if much less "stylized") M/s dinner - but to point out that there's a little too much in this book that's just a little TOO idiosyncratic.

Rubel identifies with the Leather subculture within the BDSM community, and he notes outright that his book is written from a Leather perspective and may not "resonate" with those readers to whom he refers, somewhat condescendingly, as "Non-Leather." There's a reason Rubel is respected and his books widely read among 24/7 lifestylers of all kinds; much of what he has to say both acknowledges and transcends differences. His "Master/Slave Relations: Handbook of Theory and Practice," though not without its own flaws, is so far the best book of its kind and deserves a place in every M/s household. In "Protocols," however, being the highly personal document that it is, Rubel's Leather identity is much more pronounced, much more inseparable from what he has to say. That's not to say that non-Leatherfolk won't benefit from reading it, but they should be aware that it's written from a *very* definite Leather perspective. Rubel claims that the Leather subculture is spiritual and holistically sensual in a way that non-Leather BDSM generally isn't, though to me personally it seems rather like a sort of elaborate game, at least the way Rubel goes about it. (By my way of thinking, a person is either free or not, either owned or not, and a free person isn't owned, and an owned person isn't free - yet Rubel speaks of having a Mistress as well as a slave, and of his slave having her own submissive. I guess this sort of thing works for them, but it's totally unthinkable to me.)

Rubel's relationship with his slave definitely tends toward the employer/employee model of M/s. Although he speaks of his love for his slave, and hers for him, what he describes comes across more as an amicable partnership than a passionate union of souls. That's fine - it certainly clears up some of the boundary issues that more romantically inclined M/s couples tend to struggle with - but it does make some aspects of this book less useful for those whose relationships are differently structured. (Take the subject of discreet protocols to be used out in vanilla public. As Rubel's "personal assistant," his slave can call him "Sir" without coming across as weird. As my Master's lawfully wedded wife, I can't.) I agree with Rubel that "the slave is NOT Master's 'girlfriend' . . . a person with the same rights and responsibilities as her partner; the slave is property and has only those rights given her by her Master." My problem in this area is not so much that what's in the book doesn't apply to me as that so many of the things that are important to me aren't in the book. Rubel discusses the protocols that relate to his slave in her capacities as his "valet, butler, chef, secretary, hostess, entertainer, research assistant, nurse, healer, maid, kinky play partner and sex partner extraordinaire," but there's nothing here that sheds any light on the question of how to integrate M/s protocols with my role as sweetheart, wife, and best friend. There's nothing wrong with this, per se - Rubel is writing, as he should, according to what he lives and believes - but it will make this book more appealing and useful to some prospective readers than to others.

There's one definite flaw I couldn't help noticing in this book, and it would be almost too minor to mention if it didn't speak indirectly to the author's credibility. Throughout the book, Rubel repeatedly emphasizes the importance he places on correct English and precise diction, with special attention to the connotations of words. Poor grammar and vocabulary, he writes, "[jar] the senses (like discordant music)." Later, he states, "I am sensitive to regional speech patterns my slave uses and have required that the slave eliminate them." (For example, she's not allowed to say "I'd like for you to help me"; she has to say "I'd like you to help me.") In Chapter 3, Rubel tells us that he and his slave "explore and discuss" over dinner "differences between such words as: decry/descry, pore/pour, and tortuous/torturous." Imagine my amusement, then, ten pages later, when Rubel informs us that "statements [that imply that the slave acted of her own will] are contrary to the core tenants of a Master/slave relationship." (Apparently they hadn't made it as far as "tenant/tenet" just yet.) In the same paragraph, Rubel speaks of "an accidental mishap." (As opposed to a deliberate mishap, I suppose.) In fact, the whole book is full of just such subtle errors: errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, agreement. There are some passages in which Rubel shifts inappropriately between second and third person ("Make sure the boots are clean: I do not want you to polish in any dirt. The slave will use saddle soap to clean the boots"). Perhaps most unforgivably as concerns shoddy editing, Rubel at one point refers the reader to Appendix C, when what he's talking about is really in Appendix D.

"Protocols" is a book that does contain much of value, but readers are more likely to find it generally inspiring than particularly useful. Those with a particular interest in formal high protocol in Leather settings will find it invaluable, but those whose approach to the M/s dynamic tends to be more casual will find it little more than an intriguing, intimate curiosity.

Very well done

This book is a very good book for anyone who is looking into a higher protocol lifestyle. I have used this book thoroughly and I have loaned this book to others who have used it just as much. The book is excellent, full of great information, and a quick and easy read. There are some areas that are very much geared towards those of a "higher class", but I can't hold that against the author. This is his handbook for those in service to him. This book sends you in the right direction of how to put together your own handbook.

Great insights, lots of information you probably didn't know, and fun to read too!

This is an informative and entertaining book about how popular culture has impacted the Presidency and vice-versa. Ten years ago, Tevi Troy wrote a thoughtful book about intellectuals and the modern Presidency, and now has produced a kind of companion piece that examines our highest office from a different perspective. From well researched analysis of the literary interests of the Founding Fathers (Jefferson's correspondence expressing admiration at how many books John Adams had read, while George Washington arranges a performance of the play "Cato" to inspire his troops at Valley Forge) to amusing snapshots of more recent presidents (Eisenhower refused to watch any movies with Robert Mitchum, while LBJ had no interest in films, except for a documentary about himself) "What Jefferson Read . . ." provides insight into both popular and political culture across all of U.S. history.

Full disclosure, I've known Tevi Troy for years. He brings a unique perspective as both a Ph.D. academic and a former White House staffer who has worked at the highest levels of government. As a result, you get not just an exhaustively researched survey of American history and culture, but also a practical understanding of how government and politics really works. All that and a conversational tone that's easy to read. As summer winds down and we put our beach reading aside, here's a great book to bring you back to substance without sacrificing entertainment value.

Informative, Engaging, and Fun!

In "What Jefferson Read..." Tevi Troy provides an informative and fun exploration of the ways that literature and pop culture have influenced American presidents since the Founding and how they, in turn, have influenced the culture. Every page is sprinkled with interesting anecdotes that Troy weaves into an enlightening narrative tracking the changing relationship between presidents and the cultural media (literature, theater, radio, film, television, etc.). Washington inspired his troops with the play "Cato," FDR used radio to broaden support for his policies and popularity, JFK cultivated relationships with intellectuals, celebrities, and journalists to create the image of "Camelot," and so on.

Troy also explores the tensions that presidents face when relating to the citizenry. Too little knowledge of the popular culture can make a president appear disconnected and aloof, but engaging with it too much can appear shallow. Likewise, critiquing aspects of the culture can help a president politically (see: Bill Clinton and Sistah Souljah) but it can also backfire (see: Dan Quayle and Murphy Brown).

I highly recommend reading the Appendix first, which provides a series of "rules" and "laws" that serve as lessons to presidents derived from the experience of their predecessors (e.g. - "Murphy (Brown)'s Law: If you criticize artists or celebrities, you empower them to criticize you."). I wish I had read this section before hitting the discussion of the relationship between the president and pop culture in modern times as I am sure that I would have frequently referred back to it.

Wow ! A history book thats fun to read.

Tevi Troy , the preeminent Presidential historian of our time, has written a fantastic book that is both part history and part sociologic study. In an easy to read engaging format, this book not only explains how Presidents were consumers of books, theater, radio, TV and movies but how their use of these evolving media influenced others and often their own decision making process. Interestingly, we learn culture is often used as a means to portray Presidents' images and public perception.

The book is easy to read but chock full of nuggests of fun facts and trivia. It is a book that is so enjoyable that upon completion makes me want to read again to ensure that I captured all the nuances and detail. How many history books cause that reaction ? Where was this author when I was slogging through all those dull history texts in high school ? I highly recommend this book to anyone even if you have no prior interest in Presidential history.

Foodies - this book will make you happy -UPDATED

This book is totally worth adding to your collection if you are a foodie or for giving to the dedicated home chef / serious cook. Great recipes and flavours. Not a book for your average Rachel Ray home cook, unless they are adventurous with their food and flavors, if they are, then they'll be very happy.

If you are reading this review then you probably already know who Pierre Gagnaire is. You may even have his other books, which are very pretty, coffee table book like and the recipes need DEDICATION and PATIENCE to produce. Those recipes are really for inspiration in the most.

What this book does is what the title says - bring you a world class chefs tastes and flavours into a more accesible format. The recipes are simple, many of them less than ten ingredients. Some prep maybe necessary for some of his basic sauces buy it's all very approachable and doable in the home kitchen. One or two are nicely challenging and complex.

MOST IMPORTANT: The recipes are awesome. Familiar and French, yet refreshing. Unexpected and incredibly inventive.

I rarely leave reviews but this one so deserves a good one. It's a great tome and refreshing to one's cooking to read. You also get a great education with each recipe - the chef has educational and instructive notes for the chef about recognizing good produce, techniques and more.

Pierre Gagnaire Home Recipes Twist

Not Quite ready for the Home

Buying a cookbook that was originally published in French and then translated for the American market is always problematic. The result can be simply a word-for-word translation that most Americans will find difficult to follow. Usually there is an attempt to Americanize the recipes. How successful this is depends on the translator. There have been some notable mishaps where a book translated for the UK market was released into the American market and contained many British terms not familiar to Americans. The translator of "175 Home Recipes with a Twist" seems to fall into a third category. Instructions seem to have been rewritten into American grammar, but they describe processes in a French manner. The French assume that the cook has more knowledge than American recipe writers do. Experienced cooks will know what the term "refresh" means in the statement "drain, refresh, and set aside" that follows an instruction to cook some green beans in boiling water, but inexperienced cooks will have no idea.

Then there are simple grammatical errors. In the milk-fed lamb recipe on page 183, the fifth instruction tells the reader to "Pour over the wine, turn down the oven..." following the previous instruction as to how to cook the lamb for the first fifteen minutes. The instruction should start "Pour the wine over the lamb, turn down the oven..." Gagnaire is a very skilled chef, but I doubt if he is pouring the leg of lamb over the wine.

The other place the translations run into problems is in measurement conversions and ingredient descriptions. Most of this book's conversions are correct, but I found a number of noticeable errors. It was good that weights were not converted to volumetric measurements, but since most digital scales in use today have both English and metric settings, a reader would be wise to use the book's metric measurements at all times.

Ingredients should be described in more detail. The Mortadella Platter on page 188 calls for "strong mustard." Anyone who has frequented a march� know that this refers to "moutard forte," a standard and very common type of mustard found in almost every French home. For the American marketplace, a description like "strong, Dijon-style mustard" would better. On a line above is the term green beans. Any Francophile knows that this refers to "haricots vertes," a variety of beans that are substantially different from the modern blue lake bean commonly available in the United States.

If you are the type of cookbook user where the pictures matter, this book may not be for you. The pictures generally don't represent finished dishes, but reflect the ingredients and processes that go into some of the preparations. Many are close-ups that are popular with today's food photographers. Most appear at a glance to be full page, but there are also numerous pages with four equal-sized images filling the page. All the images are vertical, so in a number of cases, horizontal pictures have been rotated to fit the vertical space. And in at least one instance, a full-page image is upside down (page 119).

If you like to read cookbooks for entertainment, this may not be for you. There are no head notes or anecdotes accompanying the recipes. The book is divided into three main sections: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This has forced a somewhat artificial division of the recipes. I have to wonder why soups are included in lunch but not dinner or why fruit compotes are for breakfast and not also for dinner.

So with all my negativity, why did I purchase this book? To obtain the French-language version would have cost 3-1/2 times more. Also, the French version comes with a CD of music under the title "Bande Originale: 175 Recettes, 1 Heure de Musique." I wasn't interested in the music. At one of the restaurants I worked at in France, we prepared some special meals with recipes from other Michelin-starred restaurants in the country. I always remember the time I spent interpreting Gagnaire's recipes, even with one of his staff in attendance. Some were winners, others not. But all were a bit off the wall. I was hoping for some ideas from these recipes, and I did get a few. I simplified his recipe for a lemon chiffon cake to make bite-sized cake pops that I flavor with a variety of syrups. I find his recipe for beef tataki interesting in that he adds a little beet puree to soy sauce-mirin-sake marinade, which he thickens and uses as a sauce instead. I can think of a number of preparations that I can derive from this.

dreadful, uselss cookbook

175 recipies ..but all are dreadful combinations of ingredients or totally obvious little mixtures of ingredients for which no cook would need instructions. An example of the former is a salad of aloe vera, green mango, dried appricots, chopped fennel, and tofu covered in corn syrup (no amount specified) and covered with chopped cilantro. Examples of the latter are Orange, grape and pear salad, which consists of three oranges, two pears, 2 oz of muscat grapes, 3 tablespoons of spiced syrup (a simple syrup with spices), 3 tablespoons of red currant jelly and optional orange juice or forbidden rice balls which consists of cold forbidden rice mixed into balls with chopped ham mixed in them. I defy anyone to eat the "misfits relish" and not vomit. I've owned bad cookbooks before but usually there are at least a few ideas hidden in them. I didn't find a single one here. For the serious cook, the use of bouillon cubes, commercial jellies and crushed candies for flavoring is just one mmore reason to stay as far away as possible from this dreadful work.
