This third edition of Legal and Ethical Issues in Nursing (previously titled Legal Issues in Nursing) reflects the continuing influence that law, legal issues, and the field of ethics have on the professional practice of nursing. Professional accountability and responsibility are ever increasing, particularly as nurses become more autonomous with the shift from acute care settings to community and ambulatory settings Professional accountability and responsibility are ever increasing, particularly as nurses become more autonomous with the shift from acute care settings to community and ambulatory settings. Professional accountability and responsibility are also enhanced as advanced practice nurses gain more independence through state nurse practice acts and through the entire restructuring of the health care delivery system in the United States.

Consumers continue to become more knowledgeable about their rights within the health care delivery system. Readers familiar with the first and second editions will recognize that much of the content in this text is new, reflecting various changes in the practice of professional nursing. The third edition also combines the field of ethics with legal issues, as these two aspects of the professional nurses' practice cannot truly be separated.

This book is, once again, intended for practicing nurses and for nursing students As with the previous editions, the primary function of this text is to familiarize both nursing students and professional nurses with current legal concepts, allowing the reader to apply legal concepts within an ethical framework, and hopefully providing for improved patient care through the knowledge and understanding of the various means in which these issues affect clinical practice. Additionally, this text is intended to:

Educate the beginning nurse, whether in the academic or practice setting, about legal issues, the functions of laws, and ethical application of legal principles.

Serve as a resource for practicing nurses, regardless of the clinical practice area.

Assist nurses in providing the most competent nursing care possible.

An important caveat is that this book is not meant to take the place of professional advice from practicing attorneys, and nurses are cautioned to seek legal counsel before proceeding with any legal matters. The book is meant to augment the role of legal counsel and assist nurses in understanding the legal process and liability issues as they relate to the ethical practice of nursing.

This edition of Legal and Ethical Issues in Nursing differs in several ways, while preserving the unique features of the former editions. The first three chapters acquaint the reader with basic legal knowledge, including sources and types of laws, the role of the court system in legal matters, and the role of case law in determining standards of nursing care. Completely revised, this first part emphasizes the vast impact that law has on the professional practice of nursing, the important role of nurse expert witnesses in defining professional standards of care, and major legal doctrines and rules that underlie nursing practice.

The second part of the book contains a single chapter on ethics in health care. This part was moved from the last part of the book to more fully integrate ethical principles into the entire text. This chapter has been revised to emphasize ethical principles and usable ethical model for decision making in clinical areas, rather than evaluating various types of ethical issues that could arise in any clinical setting. This revision allows nurses to make realistic individual decisions in everyday clinical settings, while challenging the reader to become more familiar with ethical decision making models.

The third part of the book reexplores many of the more basic liability concepts common to al clinical practice areas. Chapters in this part of the book are rewritten, and include expanded sections on patient self-determination, the role of confidentiality and electronic applications in documentation, abuse issues, and the rights of patients I research.

The final part of the book, comprising the bulk of the text, reflects nursing practice in a variety of clinical settings. New chapters in this part emphasize the vital role of ambulatory care nurses and the role managed care is playing into health care delivery system. Content has been rearranged so that issues pertinent to a specific area of practice flow within a single chapter. Content that has been added includes multistate licensure issues, telenursing, alternative therapies, and an entire section on long-term care nursing. Nursing issues are discussed from the perspective of staff nurses in hospital an clinic settings, nurse managers in both inpatient and outpatient settings, community health nurses' roles, and nurses in academic settings.

Some readers may find the content of specific chapters could better have been placed in different chapters in this part. While writing the text, I attempted to find the most natural placement for the various content categories, and some of the material could have been placed in a variety of chapters. For example, telenursing could have been added to the chapter on nursing practice acts and licensure rather than being placed in the chapter on ambulatory care nursing.

Many of the features of the earlier editions have been enhanced. Each chapter opens with a preview of the content to be covered and a listing of the key concepts to be explored. Guidelines are placed throughout the chapters for ease of usage, and many chapters have multiple guidelines. Perhaps the more useful aspect that current case law has been greatly enhanced, allowing nurses to better understand case examples of application of legal issues to professional nursing practice. Each chapter has several exercises that allow the reader to apply chapter content to actual clinical settings and assist readers in exploring their own state laws. Chapters conclude with a section entitled "After Completing This Chapter, You Should Be Able To: tat reinforces the main concepts and goals of the chapter and an "Apply Your Legal Knowledge" section that reflects critical thinking questions related to the specific chapter content.

Most exciting are the new features of the book, in particular the incorporation of ethical applications in the final 16 chapters of the book. I have been asked by many readers to develop a text that incorporates both legal and ethical issues. Readers are encouraged to address pertinent ethical principles as they complete each chapter. Sections on patient education are incorporated into many of the chapters as nurses continue to assume more of the education and discharge planning aspects of patients' care. With the exception of Chapters 1 and 10, there is also a "You be the Judge" section in all chapters, allowing the reader to truly incorporate the legal issues addressed in the individual chapter. The two chapters where this new feature is not utilized are the chapters that deal with either complicated contract law (Professional Liability Insurance) or specific procedural law (Legal Concepts.)

I am pleased to see this new edition of Legal and Ethical issues in Nursing a reality. I have truly learned a tremendous amount about the many aspects of nursing in its writing, and trust that you will learn as much in reading and using this text.

Good book missing pages needed for assignment

This is being used as a textbook for a graduate class. It is written on an interesting manner with lots of case studies.

Now that I am at the end of the course, I see the last 2 chapters are missing. Others complained chapter 3 was missing, which I have, but chapters 21 & 22 are missing. I bought 2 versions, the 2014 and the 2010 both have the same missing chapters. i need these chapters to complete my assignment.

if you have to buy this book, check it out as soon as you get it.

The book is written well, very organized and easy too follow. It does not overwhelm with information, which I appreciated. I also really enjoyed the scenarios provided in each chapter, the scenarios would apply to the content very well and made it all come together well!

Good book

Although the topic of law does not really interest me, reading this book is quite easy.
The chapters are short too so that makes me more motivated to read.
I bought this edition although my professor preferred the 6th. So far, I have not had an trouble because I bought the older edition. The page numbers are different but I just took a picture of the table of contents for the newest one and compared it with this one.

About the Author
Originally trained in the history, philosophy, and sociology of science, he is best known for his research program of "social epistemology," which he has developed in a journal and seven books, including Thomas Kuhn: A Philosophical History for Our Times (Chicago, 2000). Fuller has spoken in 25 countries and his work has been published in nine languages.

The "Das Kapital" of KM?

This is definitely a book for those who want to see through the charlatanry and the hype that passes for "KM" these days. What's surprising is that it's taken so long for a serious academic who doesn't work for a business school to produce a book like this. Fuller's goal here is basically to tell us how we got to a position where sticking "knowledge" in front of "management" has even gotten university presidents excited. It's a story that should be familiar to Marxists, since Fuller believes that knowledge is "capitalism's final frontier," but this no knee-jerk Marxist tract. Fuller is very open - perhaps too open - to alternative social and economic philosophies. His main point is that knowledge is a "positional good," which basically means that it's valuable only if it's scarce. And so, KM is really is in the business of manufacturing this new form of scarcity by things like computerized expert systems, intellectual property law, etc. This point cannot be repeated too many times, and Fuller does a great job exploring all its ramifications, especially for universities.

A confusing title

Despite its title, this is not a basic text introducing the key KM theories and concepts. Fuller attempts to place knowledge management on a 'secure intellectual footing' by tracing the historical, philosophical, and sociological underpinnings of KM. While it may offer an alternative view to the hype that abounds in the KM literature, it is a heavily theoretical text and there is very little in it for the practitioner.

About the Author
Overview takes its inspiration from Daily Overview—an Instagram project established by author BENJAMIN GRANT. Since he began the project in December 2013, his daily posts have both delighted and challenged his audience from all corners of the globe. For Overview, Grant has curated and created more than 200 original images by stitching together numerous high‑resolution satellite photographs. With each Overview, Grant aims to not only inspire a fresh perspective of our planet but also encourage a new understanding of what human impact looks like. He lives and rides his bike in New York City.

INTRODUCTION�

This all began with an accident. I was preparing for a meeting of a space club that I started and since the upcoming talk was focused on satellites and how they affect our daily lives, I was playing around on a mapping program. I typed “Earth” into the search bar to see if it would zoom out to show the entire planet. When I pressed enter, to my surprise, it did the opposite of what I hoped for, and zoomed in.�

The map had indeed settled on Earth—Earth, Texas. I was astounded by what I saw. My screen had filled with a stunning patchwork of green and brown circles. I saved the image (seen here on the left) and showed it to my friends; they, too, were amazed. It turns out my entire screen contained pivot irrigation fields, created by sprinklers that water crops in a circular pattern.�

A few months before I discovered Earth in Texas, a friend shared a short film with me called Overview. The film introduced me to the idea of the “Overview Effect”—an idea that changed the way I see our planet and its place in the universe. Coined by Frank White in 1987, the “Overview Effect” refers to the profound emotional sensation that astronauts experience when given the opportunity to look down at Earth from space. From a distant vantage point, one has the chance to appreciate our home as a whole, to reflect on its beauty and its fragility all at once.�

The anecdotes of the astronauts in the film inspired the map search for “Earth” that fortuitously led me astray a few months later. They also helped me realize that there needs to be a dramatic shift in the way our species views our planet before we can truly understand the full extent of our impact. As inspirational as this idea was, I had no clue how I, or anyone for that matter, could make that shift happen. For me, everything changed once I saw those crop circles.

Overview Will Change What You Think of the Earth...

This is a gorgeous, information-packed book, full of high resolution satellite images that would make astounding wall art. But this is not your average coffee-table book...it's an incredible and unique view of the world. Despite my decades of work in the environmental sciences, this book provided new insights, showing man's ecological, architectural, and terra-forming impacts -- for better and worse -- in ways that I had never seen before. It drove home to me what amazing things humans are capable of, how resilient and resourceful we are, and also how destructive we can be, in ways that even the best environmental writing can't always communicate. The balance between text and photos is perfect: enough to clearly explain each photo, but not so much as to get in the way of the amazing images. The text does not impose a particular point of view on the reader, but you will certainly have opinions as you fly through it. The geographic coordinates for each photo are a wonderful inclusion, too: you can easily use Google Earth to provide even greater context for the photos that intrigue you the most. For those who think or worry or are hopeful about the future of humanity on Planet Earth, this book has tremendous immediacy.

Awesome way to seeing the earth from a global perspective.

I'm enjoying the book and the author's, Benjamin Grant, perspective on the seeing the earth in a different views which mimics my own. People can now see our earth in another way more over see how they are treating our earth. I appreciate when you put the picture in contexts of size meaning when you note that the picture is 3 square miles or see the commercial aircraft in the corner for perspective of size of the image. I think this would be a great book for use in our public education system.

About the Author
Helen Smith, PhD, is a psychologist specializing in forensic issues and men’s issues in Knoxville, Tennessee. She holds a PhD from the University of Tennessee and master’s degrees from The New School for Social Research and the City University of New York. She has written The Scarred Heart: Understanding and Identifying Kids Who Kill and was writer and executive producer of Six, a documentary about the murder of a family in Tennessee by teens from Kentucky. She has worked with men (as well as women and children) in her private practice for more than twenty years. She has been on numerous television and radio shows including Montel Williams and has appeared on E! Entertainment, Fox News, Discovery, Women’s Entertainment, Biography, Oxygen and The Learning Channel. Smith has written for numerous publications including the Los Angeles Times, The Christian Science Monitor and The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Terrifying and Infuriating

Dr. Smith concisely describes how American society has become anti-male. As a result, men are opting for non-participation. A stand-out chapter is "Why Does Dad Stay in the Basement?" (pages 95-118), which posits that too many women view men as "perverts, predators, and goofballs." This chapter brings to mind the TV and radio commercials with dumb husbands being put in their place by their rude, condescending wives. Usually a callow male says or does something stupid, and then the wife sneers, "Slow down there, champ! Time to grow up and stop being a moron!" Imagine the outrage if the roles were reversed.

In 2005 Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers spoke at a conference on women and other minorities in the science and engineering workforce. Summers said that POSSIBLE explanations for the underrepresentation of women in the upper echelons of these professions MIGHT include upbringing, genetics, and time spent on child rearing. He clearly stated that he made these comments to be provocative. Listening to the presentation, MIT biologist Nancy Hopkins said, "I felt I was going to be sick. My heart was pounding and my breath was shallow. I was extremely upset." She wasn't the only one. A firestorm of male and female outrage engulfed Harvard for months.

Has any man out there ever felt sick when he saw a portrayal of us as perverts, predators, and goofballs? Have our hearts started pounding and our breathing become shallow? Now, just imagine if you could press a button and instantly change all those thousands of commercials from women calling their husbands idiots to men telling their wives to calm down, grow up, and stop being so stupid. Pause and think of the global hysteria. All double standards are enraging, but one of the worst is, "I am woman hear me roar, but I'm just a girl, so stop being mean to me."

Yet Dr. Smith is optimistic. Her book functions as a cogent identifier of the problem, a handbook of solutions, and an unflinching statement of principles. It's thoroughly footnoted, with an index and a selection of resources for men. Very worthwhile and a fast, thought-provoking read.

If you like pretty little lies, don't read this book. If you can handle the brutal truth, read it.

I think marriage and family are probably the best things you could possibly have in life. Having said that, why am I single and childless? Too risky. Divorce rate is too high. Households headed by married adults are now in the minority. The rate of increase in female perpetrated crime continues to skyrocket. Jobs are scarce. A large percentage of well educated women don't want kids or want them late in life. There are fatherless kids all over the place. One slip up with a woman and your life could be ruined.

I'm one of the many `on strike', which is wise considering the potential consequences and all that I might come up against in today's legal and economic climate. I'm well educated, have a great career, my own home, yada...yada...yada. No way am I betting all that on the flip of a coin. I can't even fathom how families with children handle divorce. Must be the most soul crushing thing in life for all involved. I consider what I'm doing to be identical to what women have done over the past 40+ years. I'm opting out of the traditional way of life.

This is an 'early an age as they can handle it' must read for all males. This book should be the start of a men's studies course in college. Just imagine the talk after that school paper announcement! HA!

The other day, a friend of mine told me that his girlfriend dialed 911 during an argument. I was rendered speechless. A chill ran down my spine. It is painfully simple to ruin someone's life with a phone call these days.

Excellent and timely

This little book is an excellent introduction to a serious problem lurking in American society. Men have been discriminated against for more than 30 years. Unnoticed is the fact that the discrimination against women, which led to the efforts to favor women in law and society, ended decades ago. I teach medical students and am well aware that the majority are now female. When I attended medical school 50 years ago, admissions committees did discriminate against female applicants because the committees, almost all male, were concerned about the perceived doctor shortage and felt that women who completed a medical education would not practice full time or would stop their practice once they had children. Today, this concern is not apparent but, interestingly enough, female physicians do tend to limit their hours and a recent study by a physician recruitment firm noted that female physicians work significantly fewer hours per week than their male colleagues who also work fewer hours than my generation did.

We are well past the era of discrimination against women but you would not know it from the newspapers or TV or academia. Dr Smith recounts her experience, not only from her practice as a clinical psychologist, but from interviewing men in the environs where they lurk and by e-mail and in comments on her blog. After reading her book, I would say, without getting into detail, that I see many examples from my own life.

She begins with a chapter on why men seem to be avoiding marriage. Here she interviews young men who are members of several subsets, including "gamers" and men at gyms and in bars. A lot of this is related to the sexual revolution in which men can get sex without marriage. When I was a college student, that was rare and men and women tended to marry earlier in life. It certainly was a motivation for both of us as women feared pregnancy and were very reluctant to risk it. Legal abortion and the birth control pill changed all this.

One additional factor is the change in society's attitude toward women who have children out of wedlock. The fact that women have less to fear from societal disapproval doesn't reduce the legal consequences for the father, or at least the putative father. She has a lengthy discussion of paternity law and the surprising (and often infuriating) results of DNA testing. She recounts many cases in which the man ordered to pay child support was not the father but this did not reduce his obligation. There are a number of cases in which a husband learned that his wife's children were not fathered by him.

She has a chapter about the war on men in college. My sons attended college over 20 years ago and I don't believe they encountered this. I certainly didn't but it is a major problem now. Sexual harassment charges are being leveled at men and they are being denied simple legal protection.

She discusses the issue of the marginalization of husbands and fathers who are being relegated to "man caves," often a basement or garage where they must keep their "stuff" or see it banned from the rest of the house. I can recall from my own experience having derogatory remarks made about my "I love me wall." This was a space for photos and plaques from my own life. Fortunately, I had already been through my second divorce and ignored the complaint. I did notice efforts to ease my "stuff" to a small office and it took some push back to avoid the "man cave" effect. I now live alone with a basset hound and hear no complaints.

Her later chapters cover why women, and society in general, should be worried about this. I am grateful that my two sons are old enough to have missed this in school and seem to have survived with their male instincts intact. I have some reservations about whether society can be shifted back to even keel anytime soon. Several of my female medical students invited me to a presentation of "Vagina Monologues" a few years ago at the school. I thanked them and declined. Both have since married and I was invited to the weddings. I do wonder how that is working out.

Some years ago, there was a movement to support the concept that a wife was entitled to half the husband's lifetime earning if she had worked while he was in school. This came up at a medical association convention, brought up by female students and doctors in training. I got the floor and asked if it had ever occurred to them that they could be the victims of similar action by estranged husbands. The matter never got any farther. Sanity returned.

I recommend this little book highly as it focused my own vague disquiet about male-female relations on certain facts, many of which were unknown to me as I am 75 years old and past the war of the sexes. I am content to live alone but married twice and paid the price although I love my children.

Crossing Lines and Getting Back over Them Again

1 • Taking Care of Ourselves

I know what it's like to lose yourself so badly that you don't know if there's a you or ever was one. I spent thirty years not knowing what boundaries were and another ten learning to set them. I gave until I was depleted and needed someone to take care of me. I threatened, begged, hinted, and manipulated to get what I wanted. I was convinced that I knew what was best for other people. I got so busy teaching them their lessons that I forgot to learn mine.

Within minutes of meeting a man, I was sure I'd met my soul mate. A few hours later, I'd fantasize about the wedding. That's how it happened on television. Isn't that how it happened in life? I'd spend two years trying to get into a relationship, and the next five trapped, clawing my way out. I obsessed until my head ached. Literally, it hurt. I didn't know what feelings were. Whenever I said I felt something, people said, "Don't feel that!"

Like millions of other women and men, I was victimized as a child. Instead of holding the perpetrators responsible, I blamed myself. There's something wrong with me, I thought. I didn't see the bad things that happened to me happening to anyone else. Feeling like we caused the problem is a legitimate stage of grief. Feeling ashamed is normal when we've been abused. Blaming ourselves is a survival skill. It helps us feel in control when life doesn't make sense and being abused doesn't make any sense at all.

Besides, aren't women supposed to suffer? We sacrifice ourselves. I became a martyr. I thought taking care of other people was my job. If I took care of them, I hoped they'd return the favor and take care of me. But that didn't happen. People expected me to take care of them once I started that pattern. There were many reasons I didn't take care of myself. The word no wasn't in my vocabulary. Good people were selfless. Loving myself was out of the question. Selfish! But the biggest reason I didn't take care of myself is that I didn't know how to.

Many of us didn't (or don't) know about self-care. It wasn't written about in books or talked about in school. We get user manuals for simple products, but we don't get a handbook for life. We stumble through complex situations, figuring things out for ourselves. Controlling and taking care of others -- the entire package of codependent behaviors -- become survival tools, living skills that we think will keep us safe. Then one day these behaviors turn on us. Our relationships and lives stop working and we don't know why. By then these survival behaviors are habits. They're all we know how to do.

If I had the years back I spent worrying about how the things I couldn't control were going to turn out, I'd have a third of my life to live over. That would be a life in which I wouldn't feel responsible for everyone or feel guilty all the time. I wouldn't waste energy controlling, enabling, and obsessively rescuing people -- the "helpful" things codependents do that don't really help. I'd let people take care of their responsibilities and I'd take care of mine. I wouldn't let people hurt me. I'd set boundaries -- say no. I wouldn't do only what other people wanted me to do; I'd do what I wanted, too. This time my giving would come from my heart, and my helping would actually help. I wouldn't judge everything that happened as wrong, including what I did, said, thought, and felt. I'd let life unfold, people be who they are, and I'd let myself be me. This time, I'd have the courage to experience true love.

I'd trust my intuition. If something didn't feel right, I'd know it probably wasn't. If I felt sad, I'd cry. If I felt angry, I'd feel that. I wouldn't ignore emotions until I imploded in illness or exploded in rage. I'd get out of my head and into my heart. I'd deal with my and others' feelings without all the drama; as much as possible I'd handle uncomfortable situations with diplomacy and tact. I wouldn't feel obligated and trapped. I'd know I had choices -- whether that means choosing attitude, gratitude, meditation, or prayer. Instead of protecting myself with fierce independence, I'd ask for help. I wouldn't be controlled by people and external events. My control center would be where it belongs -- in me. I wouldn't let other people's approval determine whether or not I approved of myself. I'd be energized by nature, God, and Life. I wouldn't drain other people, and I wouldn't let them drain me so much that my battery would die.

My relationships would be equal ones. I'd share power instead of one of us controlling and the other being controlled. I wouldn't have to create chaos to feel alive; I'd know I'm real. As one friend reminds me, instead of running headfirst into trouble, I'd go around it whenever I could (without resorting to denial). I know the value of peace. I'd create beauty, be of service, and have fun. I'd live and love at the same time. I'd admit my mistakes. But I'd also appreciate what I did well and let myself enjoy success.

This time I'd know what it means to love and take care of myself.

2 • How to Use This Handbook

To prepare for writing this handbook, I reread books I wrote years ago: Codependent No More (1985-86), Beyond Codependency (1988-89), The Language of Letting Go (1990), and The Codependents' Guide to the Twelve Steps (1990). I was surprised by how much I have changed. I barely recognized who I am now compared to who I was back then.

When I first wrote about codependency, I couldn't get theword past my computer's spell-checker. Most of the world didn't recognize the word yet either. For a book originally rejected by twenty publishers ("Nice idea," they said, "but there aren't enough codependents to make publishing the manuscript worthwhile"), Codependent No More -- strictly by word of mouth -- became a best-seller. It hit the lists and is still a backlist best-seller. My Beverly Hills internist read it as part of his medical training. It's part of many school and college curriculums. Therapists recommend it to patients. Thousands of people give it to family and friends. It's read in treatment centers, recovery groups, and by people around the world searching for how to make the pain from self-neglect stop. The subject of codependency and how to recover from it struck a universal nerve.

Naming that pain was like discovering fire -- a fire that people still discover each month as thousands begin the journey we started back then.

"We're part of a groundswell movement that's come into its own time," I wrote in Beyond Codependency. "Media and public attention may subside. But recovery from codependency is more than a fad. We started the journey of self-care and self-love. We're not stopping now."

Those words were prophetic. Concepts such as letting go, detachment, setting boundaries, and self-care mainstreamed. They worked their way into the culture. Ideas previously unknown or talked about only by small groups of recovering people are now discussed almost anywhere, from coffee shops to TV. Ideas that originated with the codependency recovery movement are now how millions of people -- whether or not they're in recovery -- live.

Four of the fourteen books I've written are devoted to codependency I didn't think I'd ever say this, but those four aren't enough. I'm writing this book to clarify confusion, discuss new information, write about how codependency has mutated, address new support options, and remind us about what we learned.

Although I've changed significantly since writing Codependent No More, I still step in codependent puddles. I might get hooked into someone's stuff, let their problems control me, over-engage, or start reacting instead of taking right action. I'll let family conditioning affect me, neglect to set boundaries, or shut down emotionally. There are times I have to slam on the brakes, STOP, and remember to take care of myself. I don't sink in quicksand like I used to, but sometimes I revert to survival mode. That's yesterday's news.

I don't call that relapsing. Caring about people we love, feeling victimized when we're betrayed, giving our all to people we love, or wanting to control people because we're watching them destroy themselves and hurt us doesn't mean we're sick. These are natural reactions. Codependency is about normal behaviors taken too far. It's about crossing lines.

This book is written for beginners and those further down the taking-care-of-themselves road. It offers practical help for people recovering from chemical dependency when they bottom out from codependency, usually after being sober anywhere from seven to ten years. The seven-year mark for recovering alcoholics and addicts is a widely accepted but unofficial recovery rule of thumb. After people stop drinking, they discover there are many things other than alcohol and drugs that they can't control, a rite of passage that could be dubbed "the Second Great Surrender." We let go of all illusions of control.

I also wrote this book for people who want to learn more about behaviors such as setting boundaries or dealing with feelings, but who don't want or need to go to treatment, therapy, or attend recovery groups. You don't have to label yourself codependent and embark on a grand transformation to benefit from this book. Instead you can learn about specific behaviors that will help you take better care of yourself. This book complements my other writing, but the material in here is fresh. This is an upgrade, building on and enhancing the work I did before, like when Windows evolved from DOS. This book can be used with my other books or by itself.

The material is divided into sections, the sections into chunks. It's structured like a shopping mall directory. Locate the spot that says YOU ARE HERE and you'll see how to get where you're going next. Great addition to the topic

"The New Codependency" is the newest addition to the volume of work published by Melody Beattie. She was one of the first to identify codependency as a problem and provide information on the subject to a large audience of readers. The first book she wrote, "Codependent No More", was originally published in 1987. This book does not replace that one, it just expands on the topic and adds additional insight to the problem of codependency.

If you are new to the subject and just getting familiar with it, I would definitely recommend you start with "Codependent No More". After you are further along in your journey, this book makes a lot of sense but I don't think it is the right place to start. It really builds upon the concepts presented in the first book and there is a subtlety to it that is best appreciated after having done some work in this area already.

As in all her books, I need to sit with a highlighter and use it freely. I also dog ear pages as I go for quick reference back when I need to review. I read it straight through and then went back and took some of the quizzes offered which was really helpful. After reading it once, it is definitely not going back on the book shelf. There are a lot of activities outlined to do to help the reader address and access issues he/she is dealing with. It is almost as if there is a workbook contained within its pages. I will continue to use it as a reference/workbook for many months to come, I am sure.

Anyone who has identified themselves as a codependent (or is dealing with a codependent) will benefit greatly from this book. She conveys her message is a loving, caring way versus a list of "shoulds" which is exactly what a codependent needs. A couple of my favorite passages:

"We're giving to get. We give to get people to need us because we don't feel loveable. Caretaking attaches people to us, creating dependent relationships."

"Another communication problem is draining energy or power from someone under the guise of "talking." People may act like they want to have a conversation with us, but many people with codependency issues use conversation as a way to get us to take care of them."

The two books truly are the gold standard on this topic.

A helpful update of ideas

Presents a needed update on thinking regarding codependency. This book addressed many of the problems I've had with the concepts of "codependency" over the years. Activities and quizzes give reader a way to put ideas into action in their lives. Probably not for someone new to Melody Beattie's work or learning about codependency in general - start at the beginning with Codependent No More or the daily readers. A strong addition to Melody's library.

A new take on helpful ideas

I have always been a fan of Melody Beattie's work, and I have benefited enormously from it since the old days of Codependent No More. I have not been in a relationship with someone addicted, but I nevertheless recognized myself in the description of the Codependent. There were so many similarities: not being able to take care of myself, obsessing about other people, taking care of everyone's needs (apart from my own, that is), not having boundaries. I seemed to be a textbook codependent, except that I did not get involved with alcoholics. So I just went along with what she had to say and read several of her books.

The New Codependency is one of the best ones. It has all the usual qualities of her work:

*She uses an empowering tone: of course you can make it. And to be honest, when she describes her life of a former junkie, you cannot help thinking: well, if she managed to get out of this mess, Surely I can get out of mine.
*Her book is packed with examples. The fact of the matter is, I can see problems and solutions so much more easily when I read about someone else. Examples allow me to do that.
*There is a lot of practical, down to earth advice. I cannot count the number of books I've read which describe my dreadful problems, but then leave me there with a vague "well I guess you need therapy" chapter. I hate it. Don't talk to me about my issues if you are not able to offer one hint of advice on how to solve them.

In The New Codependency, Melody Beattie tackles important concepts she wrote about before (boundaries, taking care of oneself, deprivation, control...), but with a higher level of maturity . Because she does not go back to the basics, I would advise not to read this book without reading first her earlier work. If you have, then it provides additional hindsight and a wiser point of view.

There are also new ideas. She insists to de-stigmatize codependency, explaining that it is just "normal behaviours, plus", that it is just a stage of grief - and I must say I find this new idea really interesting. There is a chapter about nurturing that I liked - she did not write about it earlier because she did not know what it was. And there is a whole section about emotions that I found really useful - I am one of these folks who have difficulties simply feeling.
