Great book for beginners

I am helping someone who is taking a course in school on VB 2012 and the course textbook is very bad. This book has helped him fill in those gaps very nicely. It is a good resource to get started writing applications for Windows and then move on to more challenging topics. This book presents the language in a way that is very easy to understand for beginners. Visual Basic in the NET platform has a reputation for being a "toy" language. It is not. The reasons for that are mostly historical (from the days of Visual Basic 6) and have no technical basis and are not grounded in fact. I have used C# extensively and I will say that VB in the NET platform is just as powerful. There is nothing you can do in C# that you cannot do in Visual Basic (and vice versa, of course). Visual Basic in the NET platform does not suffer from the same weaknesses as the older generation of Visual Basic languages. It is an extremely powerful language for programming applications for Windows (and web appliciations as well). If you are programming for the Windows platform, VB 2012 is a great language to work with. You will be up and running in no time and this book is a nice resource if you are just starting out. Highly recommended.

A very well written tutorial book

Ive have only had this book a couple of days (bought kindle version) and purchase it with the aim of learning Visual Basic to a standard that I can start to write some functional applications for my businesses. Im from an IT background but not programming or development, so have a basic understanding of programming anyway and have dabbled in the past so im not an absolute beginner but felt i needed to go through everything from the beginning with VB to ensure I will get things correct. So im already familiar with lots of concepts like variables, arrays, looping, operators, strings etc etc - all the basics, but I enjoyed going through the first chapters on these all the same as the writing style and the numerous "Try it Out" sections help keep things hands on which I find more interesting and by typing out the code on a regular basis it helps cement everything in my brain a little better and also get used to the visual studio environment. Im just 4 chapters in and feel quite at home in the VBS application.
The author manages to explain each concept very clearly and each section is structured in a way that it builds bit by bit of the previous examples very well. There are a couple of small errors in the book I have spotted so far but nothing major and nothing that has impeded my progress in anyway. The details level is perfect for me also as whilst it starts of with beginners concepts it doesnt shy away from visiting more technical areas which i find interesting/ For example the chapter on .NET touches on things that most beginners books wouldnt bother and there is also some foundation material binary , memory access etc - all stuff i already knew but I learnt a long time ago so a quick refresher did no harm and Im sure it is useful for those who have never learnt it in the past.

So whilst im only just 17% through Im giving this a good review already - i will probably update my review when I have been through the book to add more detail - but so far very good and recommended.

Perfect book for starting out with Visual Basic

This is required reading for a programming course I am taking. I've never looked at any Visual Basic books before, but I have done work with Java and HTML 5. I am still very much the beginner who has always been interested in programming, but found it a little scary. This book has made learning a programming language seem easier than any other I have seen, I keep asking myself if that's all there is too it. You're given examples of programming code to type which illustrate the concept the book is trying to teach. What the code is going to do is stated, then the code is given, each part of the code includes comments which explain what the section you are typing is going to do, last there is a subheading which explains why it works and is more detailed on exactly why the code typed does what is suppose to do.

It isn't a book for someone who is already is proficient in Visual Basic 2012 and is looking for long lists of coding. It is a book for someone who wants to learn Visual Basic for the first time.

I also enjoy the author's sense of humor. At one point in the beginning he talks about typing the coding in an application such as notepad instead of using the free Microsoft download of Visual Studio Express. He compares in to pounding a nail in using your shoe instead of a hammer. As someone who has used many objects other than a hammer to pound nails, I particularly appreciate the illustration and caused me to rethink my intention of using notepad. I do digress, but it's the first time I've found humor in any of the programming books that I've read.

Anyway highly recommended for anyone looking to learn Visual Basic 2012 for the first time.

Bridging theory and experiments very nicely. Highly recommended.

This book deals with various relaxation processes in liquid solutions with a strong emphasis on the inter-connection between experiments and theory. Two relaxation processes, viz., the solvation dynamics and the barrier crossing dynamics, have been discussed lucidly and with the desired expertise. The role of intermolecular correlations in guiding the relaxation processes and their reflections on experimental measurements have been elaborated. The strong relationship between theory and experiments has been maintained all through this book, and this is one of the strongest points.

In a more detail, the first four chapters (a total page ~50) lucidly present the basic concepts of various relaxation processes and their phenomenological descriptions, and a possible link that could connect the measurements to a proper theoretical quantity which can be calculated or computed. Here a physical picture has been developed which serves beautifully to those not only who are already in this field but to those also who are planning to join in. The other chapters deal with more specific examples of other relaxation processes in various media. This can be a useful reference book (with a total text-page of ~300) for relaxation phenomena in general and liquids in particular. This also complements the book by Zwanzig (Non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics, OUP, 2001). Such a book is a much-needed one as not much in the text-book level (even if advanced) was available even-though research progressed immensely in this area through a symbiosis between theory and experiments for the last 30 years or so. It's pleasing that such a text-book level discussion has finally emerged from the desk of a scientist who is one of the global-leaders in this arena and a keen observer. A second edition with suitable illustrations is thus a natural demand from such an expert author.

Comprehensive and educational book

I really like this book.

This book is comprehensive and educational; it covers many important subjects in physical chemistry and chemical physics.
In addition, Bagchi is strongly conscious of the relationship between theories and experiments in this book. This is a very important and required view for both theoretical and experimental students and young researchers.
Furthermore, we can see his distinctions in many chapters; he unrolled his theories by starting from microscopic considerations as well as phenomenological approaches.

I highly recommend this book as a text for an advanced graduate course or at least as a supplement for the advanced course.

Great resource for both research and teaching community

This book is a great resource for both research and teaching community. It describes principles of relaxation phenomena in molecular liquids in much detailed fashion, which greatly helps students especially from physical chemistry and chemical physics community. Basic principles associated with molecular relaxation (in solvents) such as dielectric relaxation, chemical kinetics, electron transfer, diffusion phenomena etc. have been discussed in depth. Most of the equations are derived in detailed fashion using fundamental principles that greatly aid students understanding. One highly beneficial fact of this book is it beautifully relates theoretical framework of molecular liquids with contemporary experiments in a simple and straightforward fashion. For example, there is a dedicated chapter explaining theory behind fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and directly relating it to FRET experiments. I envisage this to be a required textbook for course work involving physical chemistry and chemical physics along with molecular simulations.

He is also the author of Acoustic and MIDI Orchestration for the Contemporary Composer (Focal Press, 2007) and has written several articles for music magazines in the US and abroad. Andrea created the iAcousticA Studio drum library available in Kontakt, EXS-24, iDrum, Giga Studio, and Reason NN-XT formats. The Kindle Edition is missing the audio examples

This is a good book, easy to digest yet surprisingly thorough.

However, be warned. The otherwise awesome kindle edition is lacking the critical audio examples that you get when buying the printed version.

Why? I don't know. The kindle can handle audio files. Or the publisher could make the examples available on their web site.

But neither option is available. Which ruins an otherwise great read, since you'll be zooming along learning about this or that intonation -- and then the author will say "check out this sample track on the CD" -- but, woops, no audio samples are available on the kindle. I'll bet all the examples would take less than 2 or 3 MB of space as MP3 files, which would be fine. I hope Amazon or the publisher corrects this error.

Luckily, I was able to get ahold of the author himself and he helped me connect with the samples. But that's just crazy! Cool of him. Bad on Amazon!

Why was my previous review deleted?

I wrote a detailed review a couple of weeks ago that gave this book a three star rating. It was not vulgar or inappropriate in any way, yet it was completely deleted. However, I just received an email from Amazon soliciting my opinion once again!

In short, the book has some decent information on sequencing techniques, though some of it just demonstrates a firm grasp of the obvious, i.e., "use controller messages to add expression" and other similar gems.

The orchestration part of the book covers the rhythm section (don't over quantize) as well as the various sections of the orchestra and how to sequence those instruments realistically. The book does not cover how to combine instruments from the various sections. Stings + woodwinds anyone? You will have to look elsewhere for that type of information.

Recommended for beginners.

Decent book but not enough depth.

I ordered this book in great anticipation to find lots of technical details as to MIDI composition. However, the book appears to be mainly intended for students who are at their beginning trials (or little beyond) of computer composition. Though good at that level, and containing lots of very useful information and tips, the book does not go into the techniques, and their illustration, far enough. Many of the suggestions remain just that, without showing specific work. Ditto with techniques. "Use CCx for situation y" but, although sometimes graphically shown, many times the narative is not developed into thorough presentation. In other words, I would have desired (much) more analysis and examples.

Then, there's too much introduction to traditional instruments, occupying quite a hefty chunk of the book. When creating a book of this nature, one would expect that the reader be beyond elementary stages. After all, orchestration is a capstone discipline. Evidently, one must know the ins and outs of traditional orchestration in order to procede to the next level. The authors mention this, so I won't dwell on it. In my experience, the composer who uses a computer to realise his/her musical ideas, struggles mostly with less than perfect samples, which behave differently when in combination with other samples than when are sounded only by themselves. For example, no matter how good a violin section sample may be, when put together with viola section samples it will behave differently. I know, books that fully render MIDI composition experience can be of interminable dimentions. However, more extensive books are very much needed, and I am sure that readers would copiously benefit from the present book's authors' vast experience. I also realise that such books will be more expensive than this one. Oh well, the cost of acquiring skills has never been an inexpensive endeavor.

UPDATE: I have to confess that reviewing the book only a few months after its purchase was a bit premature. I dare say this because the book is packed with much more information than meets the eye when working with it only for a relatively brief time. I am not the impudent, too sure of himself, wannabe to give advice to people as to how to proceed in their work flow. This is very personal. However, if anyone is serious about computer aided composition, then you'll have to sit down at the computer with the book and try out every solution that's given, and then try it again, and then come back to it and try to improve on it, especially when it comes to strings and woodwinds. I now have accumulated enough experience to relate to the incredible problems facing the composer when orchestrating with samples in a sequencer. For example, to date I haven't heard good violin samples as far as their higher registers. They all suffer from discontinuous, grainy sound, with residual background noise which damages bow noise, and aliasing harmonics, top manufacturers notwithstanding. I'd illustrate their sound by the action of dragging a steel shovel over gravel. This sound is exacerbated in the mix with other strings, even if one finally manages to somehow EQ out a few aliasing harmonics. The book treats many of the problems that crop up in the mix and presentation of CCs, tricks to obtaining better legato and expressivity are invaluable. Equally invaluable are the examples on the CD. Needless to say, this is a seminal book, among the very few that treat composition with orchestral samples. Most of the literature out there is focused on the rock band. This book definitely fills in a very deep hiatus in the literature.

Excellent intro to UVM

This UVM primer fills a large void in learning the basic concepts of UVM. While one can take a class or read articles and code snippets on many of the Verification websites, this book is helpful on getting the overall picture which helps to answer the question "why bother with UVM". I highly recommend the book for anyone new to UVM as well as for those who have been using UVM for a while. In Verification it is easy to get too mired up in the details to forget what where you're going and why. The book is concise, easy to read, and even had me chuckling at times. I've been working as an ASIC Design/Verification Engineer for over a decade, have been using UVM for 2 years, and this is one of the best books I've read on the subject. It's highly recommended.

Excellent introductory book! If you want to know how to go from a Verilog testbench to SystemVerilog testbench, this is it!

I had been looking for a book that walked me from a testbench originally written in Verilog and how to evolve it to Systemverilog written in the Universal Verification Methodology (UVM) style. The writing in this primer is easily understood and entertaining. Support is available from the author's website in the form of downloadable SystemVerilog source code from his website. Additional support in the form of videos is also available on Youtube from his channel. To get the most from this book, you should be familiar with Java since SystemVerilog classes and methods are based heavily on Java.

To fill in the necessary gaps, I would recommend "System Verilog for Verification" by Chris Spears as a follow up book.

This is a good book to learn the basics of UVM. The author takes a simple Verilog test bench and converts it System Verilog, Object oriented Verilog and then UVM. You can see the evolution of the test bench as it is updated. For best results, download the code and follow along on the You Tube channel. This book will teach the terminology and give you a good overview of UVM.

About the Author
Les Beletsky is a bird biologist and natural history writer. After receiving a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences in 1983, Les enjoyed a long post-doctoral career at the University of Washington in Seattle, conducting field research on the ecology and behavior of birds. He also taught undergraduate courses in the University's biology program. His recent books include Birds of the World, Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds in Song, and Australia: Travellers' Wildlife Guide.

Nice pictures, little else

I don't like to be the first negative reviewer on a book especially covering my favorite pastime, world birding. This book has a broad but very shallow sweep. The chapters are organized on sections such as Sub-saharan Africa, Europe and the Middle East, Asia etc. The typical section has some general information such as how wonderful the safaris of Africa are and the birds are frosting on the cake, or Europe is great for birding but don't forget the opportunities for viewing the great cultural monuments. Unfortunately this is the trite filling for many parts of this book. The sections have one or two boxes of more interesting information such as the authors' experience looking for the Buff-throated Dipper in South America. This is just enough to have you asking why there wasn't more specific information and description for the rest of the book.

I would have appreciated at least some maps showing the best sites and a list of good birding lodges and parks. One good aspect of the book is a list of species unique to each section but the sections again cover too much area (Europe and the Middle East together) and the species have only general habitat descriptions with little more information that would be useful such as specific locations, parks etc. where they could be found.

I received this book as a gift and was excited to have it but have not mentioned what a disappointing book it is to the very nice person that gave it to me. I am hoping for a much better update to this great idea for a book in the future.

Global Birding

This book is published by National Geographic. The organization is by continent, with overviews of families of birds. The emphasis is on the most sought-after birds of each continent. The photography is beautiful. The book gives you a good feeling for how bird families are distributed around the world and how similar families occur on different continents. If you're birding overseas, it's a book worth looking at before you leave home, but don't take it with you on the plane--it's too heavy.

GLOBAL BIRDING: TRAVELING THE WORLD IN SEARCH OF BIRDS offers a fine, world-wide survey of birds and pairs lovely color photos with insights on birds of different environments, from mountains to prairies. Chapters divided by different countries of the world cover local birding opportunities, are specific in scope, and provide armchair naturalists and would-be travelers alike with fine insights into the natural history of each region. General lending collections will find this a specific, fine pick!
