Operating on the arguable assumption that creative thinking is essentially pre-verbal, intuitive and emotional, the Root-Bernsteins (Honey, Mud, Maggots, and Other Medical Marvels) outline 13 "tools" that help translate spontaneous imaginative experiences into specific media, such as painting, music, scientific experiments and poetry. Among the techniques they identify and describe are "imaging," "abstracting," "body thinking" and "empathizing." Although there is considerable overlap between categories (for example, in the sections on "analogizing" and on "recognizing patterns"), the Root-Bernsteins succeed in defining each category's uniqueness. Freely acknowledging that they are not asserting anything startlingly novel, the authors present an impressive number of firsthand accounts of the creative process, from Albert Einstein and Merce Cunningham to Oliver Sacks and Charles Ives. Some may have trouble accepting the premise that all creative thinking--whether for poetic composition or scientific experiment, and regardless of the thinker's native culture or language--is "universally" categorizable, but the authors make a strong case for a view that is becoming increasingly popular. They conclude with a list of suggestions for how to transform education from the elementary level up so that it is better suited to our demanding, multidimensional culture. (Jan.)

The Root-Bernsteins, Robert (physiology professor, Michigan State Univ.) and Mich?le (history and writing teacher), have been studying creativity for more than a decade. Using results from these studies, they have identified the following 13 thinking tools to help us tap into our own personal genius and free our minds to be more creative: observing, imaging, abstracting, recognizing patterns, forming patterns, analogizing, body thinking, empathizing, dimensional thinking, modeling, playing, transforming, and synthesizing. The book is well written and easy to follow, with each chapter containing a thorough discussion of each tool. An outstanding section of "Minds-on-Resources" assists the reader in using the tools. Scholarly and inspiring, this book is highly recommended for psychology and education collections in academic and large public libraries.

How different the painter at the easel and the physicist in the laboratory! Yet the Root-Bernsteins recognize the deep-down similarity of all creative thinking, whether in art or science. They demonstrate this similarity by comparing the accounts that various pioneers and inventors have left of their own creative processes: for Picasso just as for Einstein, for Klee just as for Feynman, the creative impulse always begins in vision, in emotion, in intuition. Such intuition naturally resists parsing, but the authors do identify and explain the use of 13 tools--from body thinking to synthesizing--for breaking out of inherited categories and exploring new possibilities. With a lavishly illustrated chapter devoted to each tool, readers quickly realize just how far the imagination can stretch. The authors concede that cataloging the tools of creative thought does not guarantee success in their application. Yet they hope that with a better understanding of those tools, society will erect bridges between isolated specialties and will establish schools that kindle rather than smother the creative spark. Brilliant; Outstanding; Better than 5-star book

It is such a pleasure to write a review of a book of this caliber. I don't have to balance what is good with what is not so good, because "Sparks of Genius" is an excellent, superb book, from start to finish. I would have only one small addition to one of the chapters, which I will mention below.
I think that "Sparks of Genius" is the first book I have ever read on the subject of how to develop genius, but I cannot imagine a better complilation of what it takes to foster and inspire genius and creativity in people. The main reason for this is that the authors base their material on how creative people in the arts, sciences, etc., acquire and develop their skills, and every chapter except the last one (appropriately) are full of firsthand examples from people of genius and creativity in (almost!) all walks of life. Yet the authors themselves exhibit their own kind of genius in organizing the material, writing chapter after chapter with genuine vision and clarity, and most importantly, after intellectually explaining "sparks" such as observing, imaging, analyzing, and empathizing, give specific, generally uncomplicated, exercises on how to develop these skills.
Throughout the book the authors demonstrate that people in very diverse walks of life exhibit the same "sparks of genius" in their work, which I find quite inspiring in itself. In this way they themselves exemplify the value of "synthesis," perhaps the key that links all the methods they depict.
The book is a call to "rethink thinking," to teach cross-discipline learning, and I feel that the methods discussed in the book, and then discussed specifically in the context of education in the final chapter, would be invaluable as educational tools. I believe that if children's education could be fostered along the lines of these tools of creative genius, if children could be taught to use their own internal resources instead of relying on the obvious external garbage such as TV and video games, the improvement to society would be tremendous.
My favorite chapter in the book is called "Empathizing," where the authors discuss what artists and scientists do to go inside of whomever or whatever they are portraying (actors), drawing (artists), treating (physicians), as well as other real-life examples.
My only small addition to "Sparks of Genius" would be in the penultimate chapter, called "Synthesizing," some mention of the "gestalt" in experiencing the whole in music, art, etc. I liked this term from personal experience and from books on gestalt therapy that came out some time ago, and it's a very intuitive concept that fits in well with the chapter's discussion.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

A brilliant examination of "the whole point of gourmet thinking and education"

I agree with Robert and Michele Root-Bernstein: "By half-understanding the nature of thinking, teachers only half-understand how to teach and students only half-understand how to learn." If true and I am convinced that it is, the knowledge exchanges to which the Root-Bernsteins refer include both formal and informal education. Whatever the nature and extent of the given teaching-learning situation, "it is imperative that we learn to use the feelings, emotions, and intuitions that are the bases of creative imagination. That is the whole point of gourmet thinking and education."

Since this book was published more than a decade ago, there has been significant research conducted on metacognition - especially creative thinking -- that adds to the support of several of the Root-Bernsteins' key points. For example, as they explain, "Creative thinking in all fields occurs preverbally, before logic and linguistics comes into play, manifesting itself through emotions, intuitions, images, and bodily feelings." Only by formulating a new conception of knowledge can we formulate a new form of both formal and informal education. The Root-Bernsteins wrote this book to explain how to do that. More specifically, they studied some of the world's most creative thinkers in the arts and sciences, then share in this book what they learned from them.

Consider these two quotations, first from Paul Horgan: "Illusion is first of all needed to find the powers of which the self is capable"; then from Albert Einstein: "In creative work, imagination is more important than knowledge." However, as the Root-Bernsteins' affirm, they are both important, in fact [begin italics] interdependent [end italics]. "Fantasy and imagination suggest how the world might be; knowledge and experience limit the possibilities; melding the two begets understanding. Without the illusions of the mind, a clear grasp of reality is impossible, and vice versa."

I am greatly indebted to Howard Gardner and his research in the field of multiple intelligences. The Root-Bernsteins may have had that concept in mind as they conducted their own research for this book. They may also agree with a paraphrasing of Walt Whitman's affirmation in "Song of Myself," that human beings are "large," they contain "multitudes."

When I first read the book and then re-read it recently, these are three of the subjects of greatest interest and value to me:

o There is a common set of thinking tools at the heart of creative understanding that need to be mastered: observing, imaging, abstracting, recognizing patterns, forming patterns, analogizing, body thinking, empathizing, dimensional thinking, modeling, playing, transforming, and synthesizing (what Roger Martin describes as integrative thinking). The Root-Bernsteins thoroughly discuss each, citing various creative thinkers and including their own thoughts about how they use one or more of them.

o The Root-Bernsteins stress "six important points about these thirteen tools" (Pages 27-29), noting that most people can at least try to "unite Illusions and Reality into Understanding through the medium of Tools for Thinking."

o In Chapter 16, after having "teased apart the threads of creative thinking and rewoven them into a synthetic understanding of innovation," they shift their attention to explaining "a new kind of transdiciplinary, synthetic education." First they note, "we need not change [begin italics] what [end italics] we teach. At synthetic education requires only that we change [begin italics] how [end italics] we teach, bearing eight goals in mind." (Pages 316-319)

Those who read this book with appropriate care will be generously rewarded by the substance and quality of the content, brilliantly presented by the Root-Bernsteins in their lively and eloquent narrative. After reading and then re-reading Sparks of Genius, I have concluded that "the whole point of gourmet thinking and education" involves a never-ending process of exploration and discovery rather than any one head-snapping insight, a process best viewed as a journey. Think of Robert and Michele Root-Bernstein as your travel agents, then as you expert guides. Bon voyage!

A Fantastic Book

I'd have to place this book near the top of my all-time favorite books. I don't think this is intended to be a formula or how-to book on creative thinking, which some perhaps were expecting it to be. (If you want something like that, the hands-down best one is James Adams' Conceptual Blockbusting: A Guide to Better Ideas) Here the authors immediately get to the main problem: "Creative Thinking in all fields occurs preverbally, before logic or linguistics comes into play, manifesting itself through emotions, intuitions, images, and bodily feelings. The resulting ideas can be translated into one or more formal systems of communication, such as words, equations, pictures, music, or dance only after they are sufficiently developed in their prelogical forms..." I've found in my own work that this is true and it's difficult in a modern command and control corporate environment to be allowed enough room to function at an intuitive level. Managers want concrete results this quarter and have no patience for intuition, yet this is a huge paradox because the people who really accomplish important things function fluently in the pre-verbal and pre-logical realm. Yes, you have to learn to translate the ideas to other forms to communicate, deliberate, document and profit from them, but if you cut of the environment for the initial synthesis, you are only shooting yourself in the foot.

I personally haven't attempted to memorize the 13 particular methods discussed; frankly if we could master the first two, observation and imagination, the world would be much different. My day job involves creating and supporting manufacturing equipment- there are so many times people ask for help, being stuck on a problem. Countless times I've been able to figure it out simply by looking- sometimes you have to squat down and look from another angle, but I come away solving the problem and people think I'm a genius. I've also run into development efforts where people say "I'll believe it when I see it". But I think we have to imagine it, then figure out how to make it come into reality. It's not that the methods listed are obtuse or strange, it's just people don't use them, let alone master them.

If you find yourself interested in multiple diverse fields, such as music and engineering, and feel things inside that make these fields feel connected, yet no one around you understands, get this book!

Jess's presentation is one of the most realistic, compassionate treatments of human nature and relationships which I have seen. His stress on being genuine, and on the deep human need for love, is superb.

Where Jess fails is in treating the examples, mostly from his classroom experience, as if the approach he outlines is strictly 'cause and effect.' During the 1970s, when a new generation was exploring being 'open' as opposed to using the conventions of conversation from the past, yet the 'self help' culture had not yet arisen, his approach seemed close to revolutionary. However, reactions other than those of one grateful for love are never presented as possible - and, indeed, one may find that is exactly what one receives.

For example, Jess, whose emphasis on our need to be loved is probably the most honest statement of the century, gives an example of a nurse who phoned her former supervisor, to whom she was grateful, to say 'I love you.' The happy tears of the supervisor are moving - but let no one expect that this was inevitable. Indeed, some people are ill at ease when told of love by close friends.

Regrettably, the current 'self help' culture could spoil the effect of much of Jess's advice. The warmth and affection he suggests could be taken today for a 'violation of boundaries,' or be feared as a technique of manipulation (much as it is not.)

I found Jess's treatment of sex to be wonderfully healthy and refreshing, yet things have changed there as well. He gives an example of a wonderful man he knew who complimented a lady on her figure (saying she had the nicest breasts he had seen), and her wholesome acceptance of this. Indeed, an excellent attitude is shown here - but a man;s compliments on a woman's figure could be
taken, however wrongly, for some sort of harrassment today.
The book can be valuable, but with the caveat that the reader must use it with discrimination.

Use some caution

I agree with a previous reviewer that this book has much to offer, but should be used with some caution. People's boundaries have changed. My personal experience in applying some of the lessons from this book is that people are often not fond of hearing self-disclosure and connecting experiences together interpersonally. People seem to like me better when I don't share much about myself and just listen to them and support them instead. Of course, too much of that makes for unbalanced relationships, but in our Hollywoodized, sound bite world, people aren't always ready for the real thing.

A Must Read

"Capitalism and Commerce" should be required reading or a required text for all students. Moreover, it provides the citizen with a wonderful foundation of our economic system. Professor Younkins provides a succinct, yet informative, philosophical basis for capitalism, then appropriately addresses all of the issues and challenges the system faces in today's world. The reader will use this book as a reference for years to come.

Must have for all Lovers of Freedom.

The problem nowadays with discourse on political and economic issues is that there is much confusion over the definition of terms. Two groups demand rights but they're in conflict because one group wants welfare rights while the other wants liberty rights. Whose claim for rights is legitimate? Well, that all depends on what is the definition of a right.

Younkins' wonderful contribution with this work is not only to demonstrate that words like `rights', `justice', and `dignity' have specific meanings, but from the view point that man prefers freedom over slavery, he eloquently lays out the ontological framework of a free society.

Today many would argue that there's a natural tension between `rights' and `justice' with a tendency for one to happen at the expense of the other. That is not true, according to Younkins. He argues that when these terms are properly understood within the context a free society, they not only fulfill their roles unfettered, they work symbiotically towards producing a happy society.

Younkins covers much in his work and in the process he clears the fog by defining the role of the law, government, corporations, education, etc. within a free society. Younkins book is so systematic, consistent and thorough that it can be used as a litmus test to measure the degree of freedom within a particular society.

My only criticism of this work (and it is very minor) is that though his intended audience are lay persons in philosophy, economics and political science, Younkins' language does get a bit recondite at times. But overall this is thoughtful and brilliant work from a fine scholar. Every person who cares and thinks about sustaining a free society must have this work included in their library.

FOUNDATION OF A FREE ECONOMY

There is today a strong presence of free-market ideas in public debates. Although collectivist ideologies still dominate the academic world, they have been on the defensive for quite some time, following the systematic disintegration of all their utopian promises. More people are finding alternative interpretations on the Internet. And if this trend towards a better understanding of libertarian ideas and values is to continue, it will be in part because of books like Capitalism and Commerce: Conceptual Foundations of Free Enterprise, by Edward Younkins.

As Younkins writes in his Preface, "In a world of change, the viability of the market economy is at stake unless those who live and participate within it possess a rational understanding and appreciation of its underlying concepts and values. Present and future participants in the business system need to have access to a "bank" of fundamental ideas that provide the groundwork for the free enterprise system this book provides such a bank. Its purpose is to be a clear, consistent, and accessible introduction and guide for anyone wishing to pursue the study of the theoretical and moral foundations of capitalism."

The book magisterially fulfills its promise. It is well-written and concise, and it presents all the fundamental arguments that anybody who supports the capitalist system should know about. Its 29 chapters cover all the main aspects of a free society: individual rights, civil society, private property, the corporation, entrepreneurship, etc. Younkins also devotes 10 chapters to refuting various ideologies and criticizing arrangements like protectionism and antitrust laws that are "Obstacles to a Free Society."
Anybody who wants to get acquainted with the classical liberal tradition of individualism, free markets, and limited government faces one big hurdle: where to start? Should one begin with the classical authors, like Adam Smith and David Ricardo, and risk wasting time and being misled trying to understand theories and issues of interest to economic historians only?

What's more, the disputes between various brands of Austrians, neoclassicals, objectivists, supply-siders, anarchists, and minarchists reflect genuine theoretical differences, but they are often of little relevance for the newcomer to the discipline. When trying to spread libertarian ideas among the uninitiated, it is no use fighting others who share major parts of our philosophy. What is important is to fight the real opponents the statists and collectivists and let people find their own path as they pursue their study.

That is the purpose of this book. Arguments are never narrowly focused on one perspective. Younkins uses all those that he finds compelling to make his point, and he leaves the others out. The chapter on inflation and money, for example, is squarely in the Austrian tradition the only one of all the free-market schools that is consistently antistatist in this field.

But the book covers all the major issues with an "ecumenical" approach, which can appeal to people from various schools of thought who share common philosophical assumptions. Its goal is not to advance the cause of one school in particular, but rather to offer a general overview of the best arguments in defense of capitalism and individual freedom. Since it is aimed at students and educated readers who are trying to familiarize themselves with the free-market perspective, this is probably the best approach.

At the end of each chapter, the reader will also find a comprehensive and useful list of authors who have written on the subject and will be able to follow his own path if he wants to study the matter further. The book's Appendix offers a 24-page Reader's Guide to Free-Market Organizations and Periodicals. Although such lists are easy to find on the Internet, this may be useful for beginners trying to find their way in this new philosophical world....

Capitalism and Commerce is not a polemical essay. Ed Younkins writes in a dispassionate, systematic, and highly effective way something one might expect from a professor of accountancy and business administration. And his message is anything but wishy-washy. His perspective is, as he writes, "uncompromising laissez-faire capitalism." His conclusion is a clear-cut exhortation to "work to create a culture of liberty that would serve as the foundation for a free society."

At a time like now, when the foundation that remains is again threatened by collectivist hysteria, we need more books like this that do away with the fallacies and reaffirm the tenets of a "just and proper political and economic order that is a true reflection of the nature of man and the world properly understood."

You don't even have to sweat if you don't want to, there is a "No-Sweat Workouts" section. Some routines are what you would expect with stretching and yoga but that's just the tip of the iceberg. The rest of the workouts will really make you work for it, lots of interesting ideas too. There is also an additional bonus of workouts like "Office Boxer", "Hero for Hire" and "Office Tai Chi". Cool, right? I should mention that it also has workouts like "Back Pain Relief", "Rotator Cuff Rehab", "Neck Pain" etc. Things that usually go wrong at work (particularly when you are sitting down all day) basically.

This book should be on everyone's office table IMO.

A Multifaceted Look at Mexican Culture in Minnesota

"Hecho in Minnesota", meaning made in Minnesota, is a partial retrospective of some of the posters created by Luis Fitch, a talented creative director from Tijuana, Mexico who now resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His art is universal but focused through the lens of Mexican culture and history. The posters are juxtaposed with quotations from Mexican folklore and famous Mexican and Mexican-American individuals. The posters are creative and colorful and playful, and filled with messages. It is a work to be enjoyed by those familiar with Mexican culture as well as those who would like to learn more about the largest Hispanic group in the United States. Many of the posters were created for community events although Mr. Fitch, through his UNO Branding, is a well known and highly successful commercial artist with an international reputation. There is a section at the end that explains the events and concepts depicted for those who are not familiar with them. The text is in both Spanish and English. It is a wonderful resource as well as a colorful and educational coffee table book.

decent book

The instructions for weaving a cane seat were much better than the instructions for replacing a rush seat. For the caning section, he could have included some tips for what to do when strands break and better advice for avoiding out-of-whack patterns. Also, the directions for weaving the binder cane were not very clear. For the rush seat instructions, beware the instructions in the beginning where you are told to measure your chair to determine how much of the corners must be filled in in order to "square off" the chair. After you determine the measurements for the chair you are working with you are instructed to "mark off one inch." Don't do it! Mark off the measurement for your chair, not the example chair the author uses.

This is a good book for anyone starting out in chair restoration. Instructions are clear and there are many good illustrations.It gives good basic instructions but no variations in pattern.All in all, it is an excellant starter book.

Needs a section on different shapes of chairs!

I found the pictures in this book very helpful, but I really needed more help when my chairs differed from the ones the author was caning. (This is the only section of the book I use.) I've used 3 books and two videos as I have learned to cane (I'm still not very good at it; I take lots of rows out and on one chair had to rip out all of step 5 and most of step 6) and each one has different strengths and weaknesses. The color photos in this book were of great help, although I would have liked closeups of the caning along with photos of the entire finished chairs. I also wish the author had given more helpful hints on how to avoid problems!
I have concluded that the best way to learn how to cane is to take a class or apprentice yourself temporarily to an expert caner. But I'm having fun!
