The Historical Novel Society - Review by Steve Donoghue May, 2012:
The backdrop of Joseph Jay Deiss and Susanna Deiss’ delightful historical novel Justa may be familiar to most readers: the city of Herculaneum, doomed to be buried under molten lava at the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. Excavations are ongoing in a small fraction of what was once a sprawling, bustling city, and like similar works at Pompeii, those excavations have yielded tantalizing clues about the lives of the ordinary people who were trapped and killed there two thousand years ago.
One such story involves a young woman named Justa whose mother was a freed slave of some wealth, which she bequeathed to her daughter. The widow of the man who freed Justa’s mother has designs on that inheritance, and the novel takes readers on a fascinating re-creation of the provincial Roman legal system as Justa strives to protect her legacy in court. She comes to the attention of idealistic young nobleman Marcus Balbus, which adds social conflict to legal woes, and Deiss & Deiss manage it all very skillfully, balancing and counterbalancing plots and subplots while keeping one eye firmly fixed on the apocalypse the reader knows is coming. Justa is an appealingly designed and profusely illustrated e-book, but its main attractions are the decidedly old-fashioned kind: solid plot, attractive young lovers, a hissable villain, and an inevitable fate that just might be survivable. Highly recommended.

Buried Treasure
By ilprofessore
Unlike ancient Pompeii, which was buried with ash when Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D, the nearby Roman resort of Herculaneum was covered in superheated pyroclastic material that eventually solidified into volcanic tuff. In the centuries that followed, a modern suburb of Naples grew up above Herculaneum. Today only a tiny portion of the ancient town--an entire civilization with all its houses, people and artifacts--has painstakingly been dug out of the tuff. Unless that modern suburb is pulled down, highly unlikely, full archeological excavation will remain impossible.
But in her historical novel, JUSTA, Susanna Deiss has performed a modern miracle. Through the act of imagination she has resurrected and excavated the lives of some of its people. Her story is based on an actual lawsuit whose legal tablets were preserved. Using the known facts about a group of patricians and slaves, she has invented the rest, bringing her characters to vivid life. Those interested in how people lived in the first Century A.D.--a crucial moment in time when some of the inhabitants of the Roman empire first began turning to Christianity--will find this a wonderful modern introduction to ancient but still living history.

A Roman Heroine
By Emilie du Chatelet
JUSTA is first of all an involving and exciting story set in Ancient Rome, full of local color that vividly recreates ordinary life in Herculaneum in the first century AD. Two pairs of star-crossed young lovers, daring to challenge the powerful Roman class boundaries by falling in love with fascinating but "inappropriate" lovers, a dramatic legal case, the embattled situation of early Christians--all this is capped by the terrifying eruption of Vesuvius that buried Herculaneum, as well as Pompeii, preserving for archeologists the world described here.
But the history and archaeology behind the romantic plot make this novel more than just entertaining, the details of Roman life more than just local color. Embodied in its attractive heroine and her dangerous legal situation are insights about the position of slaves and women in Rome, an attempt to ask what a feminine hero might be like in a world so different from ours, but the ancestor of so much of our culture, politics and law. Adults and young adults can read this novel for fun, but they will still come away with a living picture of the Roman legal system and social life in Herculanium.

Really got into it
By L. Farrell
JUSTA is a rare read for me, but I really got into it. it successfully combines historical background, a suspenseful plot and dramatic imagery. By the end, the fate of Justa and her friends really matters. It would make a great movie!
