When life punches you in the stomach....acceptance or fighting to seek answers?

This is one of the best variations on P&P that I have ever read. I found that it had been released by a note on a blog this morning and, as I have read and loved this author's other books, immediately read the Sample and then ordered it. I finished it just now. I rate many books and/or movies by the number of tissues I use and this one was up there with 7 tissues...not just a tear or two but out-and-out sobbing at times.

I have to mention that there is an issue in this book which is alive and well despite some improvements, some progress in amelioration over the centuries. That is the conflict between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. It has been very much in evidence in my lifetime in news from Ireland and Britain, and here in the states although not in violent marches and splits in families that seem to occur in Ireland, especially. Pardon me if I am wrong but that is what has been portrayed in the news media and in this book it plays a big role.

This story starts with a flashback as a young man throws himself on an altar, sobbing, and bemoans "her death". It then takes us to Longbourn, to that confrontation between Lady Catherine and Elizabeth, in which Lady C. is demanding that Elizabeth not ever become engaged to her nephew. Here the story diverges in A HUGE WAY, and this point, this news, this major bit of family history and the research into and resolution of the issue, take up most of the REST of the story.

This tale, within the first few pages grabbed my heart with both hands and didn't let go for a long time. I didn't want to put it down. And I wanted to share it with all my JAFF friends. There are dark, gloomy valleys of despair descended into and high mountains of joy climbed in this story. Most of the characters from canon residing at Longbourn are there but Darcy's family has added characters, two uncles, who play major roles for Elizabeth and Darcy. Lady Catherine and her deceased husband also play important roles. Colonel Fitzwilliam has a lesser role but continues to see Elizabeth's worth, even to be drawn to her charms. Georgiana is present for many scenes and relates to Elizabeth as in canon. Mr. Bennet's relationship with "his favorite daughter" gives us food for thought: did he act in the best interest...for Elizabeth...for himself?

I don't want to state my one objection as it would be a SPOILER but the practice of such is no longer allowed in England. The romance, the chemistry, the words of love, the longing - even when not allowed bring sighs and angst. And in the end, in the epilogue, the author brings FAITH into Elizabeth's look back on the past ten years and the events, the fact that life is not always fair. I love the way the author brought life's realities into this story. Our Dear Couple's life was not always perfect and Elizabeth was not always happy and smiling and teasing. But this made the story all the more of a delightful love story.

There are so many amazing stories and authors in the Jane Austen fan fiction world but after reading countless online and owning well over 350, it is not difficult to confuse one story from another. However, author Jan Hahn’s latest offering, “A Peculiar Connection--A Pride & Prejudice Alternate Path” is beyond daring. Heartrending. And written so painfully well—one could never confuse it with another.

“A Peculiar Connection” begins when Lady Catherine de Bourgh confronts Elizabeth Bennett in the prettyish kind of little wilderness at Longbourn and declares any union between her nephew Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth would be “a sin against Heaven itself!” and offers a mysterious document as proof. But as Elizabeth tries to accept the truth, Darcy cannot--and is on a mission throughout the novel to unearth long, buried Pemberley secrets. “Elizabeth, ours is a peculiar connection, but a connection I will endure. You must not doubt me, for I possess the strongest of wills. When I set my mind to a task, it is accomplished.” And though he puts on a brave face, the heart wants what the heart wants and Hahn’s achingly beautiful prose had my own heart in my throat for countless pages. I willingly suspended my belief as Hahn unfolded her shockingly, unbelievable tale and I confess to have been brought to tears several times as Darcy and Elizabeth bear this poignant torment and disavow their longing. “I looked away, unwilling to meet his eyes. ‘Elizabeth, I…’ ‘Sir, I pray you say nothing more.’ He turned his eyes to the window, and in doing so, he sighed deeply. ‘Then let us say farewell, and God bless you, Elizabeth.’ He raised my hands to his lips, and I caught my breath at the tenderness of his kiss.” (Gahhhh, like I said…I was gutted.)

Despite the torment, and as in Hahn’s other novels, written in the first person through the eyes of Elizabeth Bennett, we are privy to her sharp wit and amusing inner commentary to soften our sweet torture. “Once I did find myself without a partner, I witnessed Mr. Darcy ask Marianne to dance a second time. I decided I had made a mistake earlier, thinking she and might be friends. Of a sudden, I decided she smiled too much.” But have faith, blessedly, and in true Austen style, we are rewarded with a most satisfactory resolution.

Fans of Jan Hahn may recognize this as “Sins of the Father” that was first posted online in 2011. I remember reading this online as a work-in-progress at Mrs. Darcy’s Story Site in 2011 and waiting anxiously each week for her to post the next installment. Sundays soon became known in my household as "Jan H Night". Note, this latest has been professionally edited and tightened whilst the overall story remains the same…and I am delighted to own the kindle version (and await delivery of my paperback to be able to read in the bath and not risk electrocution.) Hahn’s writing is always well written and her characters never disappoint. Regardless of how far she may stray from canon, her Darcy and Elizabeth always honor Austen's originals (at least to me). I will wait in joyful hope for her next offering but until then, “A Peculiar Connection” is not to be missed. You can thank me later.

Wow, what a great variation

WOW what a story! I have read many other variations that were very good but, this variation out shine them. When Elizabeth learned devasating news that she is the illegitimate daughter of George Darcy her world is turned upside down. She run the gambit of emotions, hatred for the Bennetts, self doubt, anger and despaired. Together with Fitszwilliam she learned the tragic love story of her natural parents and to forgive those who raise her. Ms Hahn writes with such emotions that you feel for the characters. I don't get emotional when reading but the letter that Elinor wrote to Elizabeth about her mother got me all choked up. I highly recommend this novel and others Jan Hahn's novels.

Welcome to Grow Great Marijuana! This book was written to serve a single purpose: to teach people how to grow great marijuana indoors. Based on my own experiences in learning how to grow, it’s not as easy as it sounds. There is a lot of information already out there; some good, some bad, and some just too complicated to be useful.

When I started growing, I had always wished that there was a single book that taught the basics of how marijuana grows, what equipment I needed, and how to take care of and harvest the plants. Unfortunately, I had to read through a pile of books and make a lot of mistakes to get through my first few grows.

Some books I read were too technical, with a lot of detailed charts and diagrams. Other books were too simple and didn’t answer the questions I needed answered. I was certain that all of the essentials could be put into one easy-to-read book that took the reader from the beginning to end of growing marijuana indoors.

And you? Maybe you’ve read through a few books and now have more questions than answers. Or maybe you don’t know much about growing and want to find out if you could do it. Or maybe you’ve even tried to grow once or twice and just weren’t happy with the results. In any case, this book was written with you in mind.

About the Author
Logan Edwards has written a masterpiece of the pick-up arts that teaches you all of the theory AND all of the techniques you need to meet and attract women. Over the past ten years, he has devoted his life to unlocking the secrets of the male/female mating dynamic. The DUMMIES guide to Growing Marijuana

I think if the Dummies people made a book for growing marijuana, this would be it. I recommend this book because:

1. It's got pictures and illustrations on how to do everything from germinating seeds to cloning to harvesting.

2. It doesn't have a bunch of scientific charts and huge words, it's all easy to understand.

3. Fully covers new techniques like Sea of Green and Screen of Green.

4. Explains the safest way to get seeds and equipment.

5. Awesome pictures.

6. Covers everything from how marijuana grows, all the equipment needed to grow, every phase of growing, plus harvesting.

7. Important chapters on security and pests and disieses that helped me out a lot.

8. Again, very easy to read and understand. Got me excited to start growing.

I have some of the other books, but I'd definately start with this one just cause it's so easy to figure out.

Not a "Bible", thankfully...

Some of the other books consider themselves the grower's bible. This book doesn't make that claim, instead it's more of a How-To book that holds your hand through all the things you need to do in order to grow marijuana. From picking the room, buying the equipment, to the actual grow, it's mean to teach newbies all the basics, plus a few advanced techniques like SoG and ScrOG. The bibles are great if you just want to look up something, but if you want to actually learn from beginning to end how to grow and harvest, this is your book.

If you don't have a clue and are growing hydroponically it might be ok, otherwise waste of money

I was considering buying one of the "grow bibles" on amazon, but on reading some reviews it appeared the grow bibles were only reference texts. I found a couple recommendations of THIS book for new growers. I assumed that it still covered all of the same topics as the bibles, only in simpler terms. Boy was I ever wrong. If you don't have a single clue on how to start growing marijuana and you don't know how to use google, and your DEFINITELY going to grow hydroponically, this book might be useful. However, if your growing in soil, this book is useless. All of the material presented (with very few, small exceptions) are based on the assumption that your going to be using a hydroponic system. In fact I'd go so far as to say it should be entitled "Grow Great Marijuana Hydroponically" Also, if you know how to use google, you can find out quite easily, ALL of the information presented in this book with just a few simple searches. This book also doesn't give a lot of details about CFL lights or other fluorescant lights. It says a little bit about it, but primarily focuses on HID lights (Metal Halide, High pressure sodium) which some of us (me) just can't afford.

Also, this book spends a lot of time (seemingly needlessly) describing factors such as grow room security and location. It appears that the book has more information on the semantics of growing pot than it does on the actual process and science. There are a couple chapters on vegetative growth, flowering phase, etc - they are about 10 pages long in a book thats 250 pages. Lots of worthless filler in this book.

As I mentioned, if you were clueless, planned on growing hydroponically, and didn't care much about the science of pot, this book might be ok, which is the only reason it has two stars from me instead of one. But ALL of the information in this book is easily found by googling it, and this book is worthless if you plan to grow in soil. Also there are only a few sections of good pictures in the book, and the pictures are rather vague about why they are even in the book. I would say if you have already googled about pot and/or started growing, get one of the bibles. I know its what I'll be doing next.

A most wonderful conversation

I first read this book in the 1970's when it was new. I've owned a copy ever since, and I've given so many away as gifts that I've lost count.
It is easily my favorite book. From the moment I first read it, until today; I open its pages and feel as if I'm having a literary conversation with an old friend.
The "moral" in the title puts off some folks, but don't be deterred. Gardner uses the term "moral" as you or I would use the word "truth." All Gardner is imploring is that authors seek the truth when writing fiction and avoid cheap tricks and cheap effects. That is all.
Yes, Gardner did feel that writing comes with a responsibility. He also felt it was nothing less than a privilege, and thus comes the responsibility that goes with privilege.
Buy it, enjoy it. If you share Gardner's view (as illustrated in the paragraph above, I promise you -- you will cherish this volume).

An Essential Screed

This book created some stir when originally published, perhaps due more to the naming of names (of peers Gardner judged arrogant/irresponsible/careless) than to the deeper ideas/passions which inform it. One star is subtracted for poor strategy, excessive willingness to engage on turf occupied/fortified by his not at all innocent victims. Gardner does get lost, from time to time, in one abstract philosophical swamp or another. The book may be needlessly long. But the writing rings true, finally. This is the most ambitious literary argument published during the past fifty years, certainly, and it is essentially on the mark. The academic canon was tilting dangerously in the direction of empty opaque diddling during the seventies, choked with very talented hip and superhip cynics, often on university payrolls, weary of the ancient plain work of shaping stories. The vogue was so universal that Gardner fails to find a single working American high lit contender (excluding himself, we trust) to like without heavy reservations. He does favor one Englishman, at least. This ground is tricky. Some of the writing disdained/derided seeks, in various ways, to imitate James Joyce, who is granted a semi-pass, and Ezra Pound is not properly whapped until near the end. Connecting the wave of mean arrogant cleverness to its obvious roots counts, has consequences. Gardner, who died by motorcycle accident in the early eighties, may have been just beginning to fight.

Fresh Air

Gardner's work certainly won't appeal to postmodernists or other avant-garde scribblers who believe form takes precedence over content. His thesis is simple: all art purports to better the world, not hinder it; all art essentially believes in a form of goodness, truth, beauty, whatever you want to call it, in the sense that it affirms that there is an inherent value in life and no value in "valuelessness." He comes down strongly on writers who write like "writers," and where style becomes more important than the timeless art of storytelling. All this probably won't be very compelling to many of the readers who cling to the works of 60s writers like Pynchon, Gass, Coover, et al., who write thinly disguised treatises, not novels, and who people their books not with characters but mannequins. There is something old fashioned about Gardner's point of view, which won't win him many hipster fans, but his argument, this reader feels, stands up even stronger in today's climate where the main literary trends seem to consist of endless irony, facile references to pop culture and television. Furthermore, his book is lucid, trenchant, passionate, engaging, and of course, confrontational.

Rousing and thoughtful Age of Sail adventure

The story opens with an action with barbary pirates, ones that HMS Prometheus will encounter again among her many foes in the Mediterranean. The line of battle ship commanded by Captain Sir Richard Banks at last joins Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson’s fleet. Through Sir Richard’s eyes, we glimpse the great man and his band of brothers at their council of war. Renown naval figures are not the interest of the tale, however, that lies with the officers and people of HMS Prometheus; lieutenants Mr. King and Mr. Caulfield, Captain Banks, and the naval surgeon and his wife, Robert and Kate Manning.

One major fleet battle, and several single ship encounters, provide thrilling action, but author Bond’s great achievement is in the humanity of his characters and their situations. Mr. King must recover from injury and learn to cope with changed physical capabilities, while Mr. Manning experiences the guilt of a physician who may have done his patient as much harm as good. And a young maid brought aboard by Mrs. Manning ends up changing the lives of several of HMS Prometheus’ officers. This eighth installment in the Fighting Sail series is both a rousing sea adventure, and a sensitive study of a ship of war’s people and their culture in the age of Nelson.

Eighth book in the Fighting Sail Series -- Destined to be a classic in age of sail literary fiction.

In HMS Prometheus as with every book in the Fighting Sail Series, we meet new characters and become more fully acquainted with older ones. Some characters die or otherwise leave the story which give the entire works a realistic and life-like feeling and keeps me guessing. The author has a comfortable command of his subject and setting, spiriting us throughout the entire ship as we watch officers, men, and challenged by a variety of situations. There is plenty of chasing and fighting action, as expected, but what I particularly admire and enjoy about this book is how each character has his or her own story arc that intertwines with the rest of the characters' dilemmas. Seaman Flint's story particularly resonated with me, as did that of Kate, the surgeon's wife, and her maid Poppy.

HMS Prometheus has an unsettling ending which has me anxiously awaiting book 9 so that I can find out what happens to the rest of this ship's company I have come to know and care about. All in all this is a well imagined, well crafted series that feels authentic and fully lived. I loved it.

fans of this author will probably enjoy this book but not rank it in the top ...

I"ve read all Bond's books so far and this one is not up to the others but I'm giving it 3 stars as I do any book that I'm willing to read all the way through. I frequently had the feeling that Bond didn't write the book as it didn't seem to match my memories of the others. There were long stretches where some character was navel-gazing or wool-gathering. One action scene occurs where an officer, risking his life in a dangerous task, finds himself so self-absorbed he forgets what he's doing! This with Barbary pirates trying to kill him!!

There are also scenes where I frankly couldn't tell what was going on--often the choice of words in the dialogue seemed vague. Anyhow, fans of this author will probably enjoy this book but not rank it in the top tier.
