When life punches you in the stomach....acceptance or fighting to seek answers?

This is one of the best variations on P&P that I have ever read. I found that it had been released by a note on a blog this morning and, as I have read and loved this author's other books, immediately read the Sample and then ordered it. I finished it just now. I rate many books and/or movies by the number of tissues I use and this one was up there with 7 tissues...not just a tear or two but out-and-out sobbing at times.
I have to mention that there is an issue in this book which is alive and well despite some improvements, some progress in amelioration over the centuries. That is the conflict between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. It has been very much in evidence in my lifetime in news from Ireland and Britain, and here in the states although not in violent marches and splits in families that seem to occur in Ireland, especially. Pardon me if I am wrong but that is what has been portrayed in the news media and in this book it plays a big role.
This story starts with a flashback as a young man throws himself on an altar, sobbing, and bemoans "her death". It then takes us to Longbourn, to that confrontation between Lady Catherine and Elizabeth, in which Lady C. is demanding that Elizabeth not ever become engaged to her nephew. Here the story diverges in A HUGE WAY, and this point, this news, this major bit of family history and the research into and resolution of the issue, take up most of the REST of the story.
This tale, within the first few pages grabbed my heart with both hands and didn't let go for a long time. I didn't want to put it down. And I wanted to share it with all my JAFF friends. There are dark, gloomy valleys of despair descended into and high mountains of joy climbed in this story. Most of the characters from canon residing at Longbourn are there but Darcy's family has added characters, two uncles, who play major roles for Elizabeth and Darcy. Lady Catherine and her deceased husband also play important roles. Colonel Fitzwilliam has a lesser role but continues to see Elizabeth's worth, even to be drawn to her charms. Georgiana is present for many scenes and relates to Elizabeth as in canon. Mr. Bennet's relationship with "his favorite daughter" gives us food for thought: did he act in the best interest...for Elizabeth...for himself?
I don't want to state my one objection as it would be a SPOILER but the practice of such is no longer allowed in England. The romance, the chemistry, the words of love, the longing - even when not allowed bring sighs and angst. And in the end, in the epilogue, the author brings FAITH into Elizabeth's look back on the past ten years and the events, the fact that life is not always fair. I love the way the author brought life's realities into this story. Our Dear Couple's life was not always perfect and Elizabeth was not always happy and smiling and teasing. But this made the story all the more of a delightful love story.
Dear Readers, this one is a MUST...do not miss reading this tale.

There are so many amazing stories and authors in the Jane Austen fan fiction world but after reading countless online and owning well over 350, it is not difficult to confuse one story from another. However, author Jan Hahn’s latest offering, “A Peculiar Connection--A Pride & Prejudice Alternate Path” is beyond daring. Heartrending. And written so painfully well—one could never confuse it with another.
“A Peculiar Connection” begins when Lady Catherine de Bourgh confronts Elizabeth Bennett in the prettyish kind of little wilderness at Longbourn and declares any union between her nephew Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth would be “a sin against Heaven itself!” and offers a mysterious document as proof. But as Elizabeth tries to accept the truth, Darcy cannot--and is on a mission throughout the novel to unearth long, buried Pemberley secrets. “Elizabeth, ours is a peculiar connection, but a connection I will endure. You must not doubt me, for I possess the strongest of wills. When I set my mind to a task, it is accomplished.” And though he puts on a brave face, the heart wants what the heart wants and Hahn’s achingly beautiful prose had my own heart in my throat for countless pages. I willingly suspended my belief as Hahn unfolded her shockingly, unbelievable tale and I confess to have been brought to tears several times as Darcy and Elizabeth bear this poignant torment and disavow their longing. “I looked away, unwilling to meet his eyes. ‘Elizabeth, I…’ ‘Sir, I pray you say nothing more.’ He turned his eyes to the window, and in doing so, he sighed deeply. ‘Then let us say farewell, and God bless you, Elizabeth.’ He raised my hands to his lips, and I caught my breath at the tenderness of his kiss.” (Gahhhh, like I said…I was gutted.)
Despite the torment, and as in Hahn’s other novels, written in the first person through the eyes of Elizabeth Bennett, we are privy to her sharp wit and amusing inner commentary to soften our sweet torture. “Once I did find myself without a partner, I witnessed Mr. Darcy ask Marianne to dance a second time. I decided I had made a mistake earlier, thinking she and might be friends. Of a sudden, I decided she smiled too much.” But have faith, blessedly, and in true Austen style, we are rewarded with a most satisfactory resolution.
Fans of Jan Hahn may recognize this as “Sins of the Father” that was first posted online in 2011. I remember reading this online as a work-in-progress at Mrs. Darcy’s Story Site in 2011 and waiting anxiously each week for her to post the next installment. Sundays soon became known in my household as "Jan H Night". Note, this latest has been professionally edited and tightened whilst the overall story remains the same…and I am delighted to own the kindle version (and await delivery of my paperback to be able to read in the bath and not risk electrocution.) Hahn’s writing is always well written and her characters never disappoint. Regardless of how far she may stray from canon, her Darcy and Elizabeth always honor Austen's originals (at least to me). I will wait in joyful hope for her next offering but until then, “A Peculiar Connection” is not to be missed. You can thank me later.

Wow, what a great variation

WOW what a story! I have read many other variations that were very good but, this variation out shine them. When Elizabeth learned devasating news that she is the illegitimate daughter of George Darcy her world is turned upside down. She run the gambit of emotions, hatred for the Bennetts, self doubt, anger and despaired. Together with Fitszwilliam she learned the tragic love story of her natural parents and to forgive those who raise her. Ms Hahn writes with such emotions that you feel for the characters. I don't get emotional when reading but the letter that Elinor wrote to Elizabeth about her mother got me all choked up. I highly recommend this novel and others Jan Hahn's novels.
