Memoir Unbound
By rad
I've read this book a few times. It's funny, disturbing and as many note,a little too hip for it's on good. That said, l like the fact that it is not preaching to me or too didactic, as he admits he isn't completely sober even after he sobers up. His quick wit and ability to manipulate the reader is stellar. You empathize with his compulsive need to devour any and all drugs in his path, even if you don't fully understand it. One of the reasons the book is so moving is stahl's willingness to expose some very dark secrets. The way he drives by his landlady when she flags him down for help because her elderly husband is succumbing to a heart attack is just one. Dragging his infant daughter into a shooting gallery even unnerves a skeletal junkie as she mad dogs him for his lapse in decorum, shooting uo in his neck while living in his vintage caddie, ignoring the creepy child porn in his dealer's closet, uncomfortable scenes of his excess as he pitches an outrageous yet brilliant story line for his puppet from outer space sit com, stealing his kind friend's pills and the end which begins with the Rodney King riots, a sort of moment of truth for anyone who lived in LA for the sh** is burning show. When you read a book more than once, as I often do, each time is a different experience. I realized my third time in that Stahl was a skillful manipulator not unlike my player beaus from back in the day. If you go to a reading or event where Stahl is featured, you'll note a bevy of bookwormmy women in all shapes, colors, ages and demographics are watching him with adoration and hopelessness because they intuitively understand he is unavailable to them. Maybe this is part of his appeal. But he seduces you. You fall for the.narrator, and you're probably going to confuse him with the writer no matter what book you read. One assumes PM, a memoir, is the closest to who he truly is. I'm not so sure. Having read him since he was a Hustler hack churning out Penthouse Forum letters
( I was like 11 and raiding my old mans collection of gentleman rags as I prepared for my first career as a stripper) and later latching on to his voice in the LA weekly as I stripped in preparation for my destiny as a writer, I truly responded to his style because I never connected the dots until much later when a student in my HS English class ( he had a heroin jones at 17 and asked me to help him-- he's a nurse who married the girl I chose for him these days) brought me this book and insisted I read it. Next thing I knew I had the Stahl collection circulating in my underground book club as kids latched on to Perv, Fatty and Love Without. Ultimately Paradoxia by Lydia Lunch beat him out. But I dragged kids to Stahl's readings and he ended up shipping us books so I could keep up. I know I was a great teacher because my students were always stealing my books.
So is PM perfect? Not really . It's legendary though as Stahl admits the tome originally started out as a nearly 1000 page embarrassment his mentor Cubby wisely advised him to edit with this advice : Write with love. I try to heed these words myself but it's not as easy as it sounds. However, I suspect it is the guiding spirit in this memoir which opened the door, for better or worse, to many a drug addled memoir. In grad school I wrote a paper on the history of drug memoirs which was just around the time Stahl's was getting a lot of attention for this book. I had DeQuincey, Crowly and Irvine Welsh but something about Hollywood hipster put me off. I clearly recall reading an article about Stahl in the LAT and considering going to his reading that night at Skylihght Books. It was 1998 or 99, I didn't go, but I alluded to Stahl in my conclusion as the beginning of a trend. When it comes to literary matters my insights tend to be uncanny. Sadly my own life tends to be less available for such penetrating scrutiny.
I would like to Say Bukowski is my biggest influence as he's a much better writer than Stahl. But I know that Stahl's manic and cartoonish excess has been the Template for the writer I am today. His been a part of my Writng life since I knew I was a writer and always in an illicit and scary way. As such he's made me a little dishonest, something Hank's influence dissuades. But that's the nature of fiction, and like it or not memoir is fiction because none of us are willing to tell everything . Stahl just makes it look that way.

Jerry is awesome
By Yellowbananababy
What I'd give to have a serious, some-what sit down with Jerry Stahl. I throughly enjoyed this memoir from start to finish. I would like to know what happened to Kitty. Did he love her? Really? I am sober a year and change and would have liked a chance to read about his experience getting sober for longer than a 90 day period. Maybe I was seeking hope from him. My family is from Pittsburgh so a lot of his stories really hit home for me. He certainly lucked out with Hubert Selby Jr. as his mentor, as I look up to him as well. Overall, Stahl's style had me on the edge of my seat whether he was kicking or scoring or how the days ran together in the meandering lifestyle of being a dope fiend. I remember what it was like to have all the time and the money in the world. Dope was just not something I'd ever imagine would run out, until it did. I could really relate to his whole Kitty saving him deal, even though it doesn't last. I enjoy knowing that I'm not the only one who has replaced the stuff with love. Whatever works. His words work with my head and I'm glad it's over (but I'm actually already reading it again). What a trip. I'm just stoked to know the man is sober. It's possible to make it out alive. We need to know where we came from to keep us from going back. From one junkie to another, the last few pages with the dope sickness and subtle epiphany, made me want to vomit as I crawled on rock bottom with him. Poignant stuff. His veracity and humor were perfectly put down on paper. Raw, gripping, Hollywood man...

Note: I just had a chance to meet Jerry at a reading in downtown Los Angeles. He was one of the nicest and most humble men I've ever met.

Tremendous writing, regardless of the subject matter
By A reader
I first read this book two years ago, and it still feels stuck in my head as though I finished it yesterday. I don't have any real experience or understanding of hardcore drug addiction, but this book is so phenomenally written that it doesn't matter. Stahl may have struggled though a litany of personal issues and may have never achieved the success in Hollywood that he could have, but he's a fantastic spinner of poignant, funny, and captivating prose.

A gut-wrenching depiction of his life through the very worst scenarios imaginable (seriously, many of these anecdotes will absolutely stop you in your tracks), Permanent Midnight doesn't ask for your sympathy, but the quality of the writing--plus that undercurrent of thought that, deep down, you know he's a good guy--makes you pull for him at all times. Highly recommended.

"Insight" and "Change." The problematic relationship between these two concepts, to which the reality of psychoanalytic patients who fully understand maladaptive patterns without being able to change them attests, has dogged psychoanalysis for a century. Building on the integrative object relations model set forth in Transcending the Self (1999), Frank Summers turns to Winnicott's notion of "potential space" in order to elaborate a fresh clinical approach for transforming insight into new ways of being and relating. For Summers, understanding occurs within transference space, but the latter must be translated into potential space if insight is to give rise to change in the world outside the consulting room. Within potential space, Summers holds, the analyst's task shifts from understanding the present to aiding and abetting the patient in creating a new future. This means that the analyst must draw on her hard-won understanding of the patient to construct a vision of who the patient can become. Lasting therapeutic change grows out of the analyst's and patient's collaboration in developing new possibilities of being that draw on the patient's affective predispositions and buried aspects of self.

In the second half of the book, Summers applies this model of therapeutic action to common clinical syndromes revolving around depression, narcissistic injuries, somatic symptoms, and internalized bad objects. Here we find vivid documentation of specific clinical strategies in which the therapeutic use of potential space gives rise to new ways of being and relating which, in turn, anchor the creation of a new sense of self.

Review

"In this erudite and stimulating book, Summers demonstrates psychoanalytic theorizing at its best. Summers is an original thinker and, obviously, a compassionate and committed therapist. But he also serves as a model of how we can learn from each other, and how we, as theoretical pioneers, can explore the theoretical terrain of our colleagues without colonizing or laying waste to their lands. Of all the great gifts in this book, Summers offers this one throughout: he comes in peace."

- David Anderegg, Ph.D., Psychologist-Psychoanalyst

"Drawing on several rich traditions within psychoanalytic writing, Summers provides an original and necessary view of how psychoanalytic psychotherapy can facilitate change of the self. His many clinical examples demonstrate his thesis and give the reader a down-to-earth sense of how to go about doing what Summers proposes."

- Christopher Bollas, Ph.D., Author, Dark at the End of the Tunnel

“Summers offer a substantial development of Winnicott's perspective, contending that change does not occur through understanding alone, but rather requires the specific recognition of the patient's potential for agency and the welcoming of her spontaneous gestures. Deftly merging philosophical erudition with practical experience, Summers takes us to the heart of the clinical enterprise, the ability to uncover the seeds of a possible future beneath the familiar layers of yesterday’s repetitions. Saturated with the details of live interaction, tuned in to the small voice of desire, Self Creation strives to teach the unteachable: how to listen.”

- Jessica Benjamin, Ph.D., Author, Like Subjects, Love Objects

"Summers' approach to therapy is challenging and inovative and carries the intersubjective to new levels that deserve thoughtful consideration."

-W.W. Meisnner, S.J., M.D. in Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic, Vol. 71, No. 3 (Summer 2007)

About the Author
Frank Summers, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, is a training and supervising analyst at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis and an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University Medical School. A member of the faculties of the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis, the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Institute, and the Wisconsin Psychoanalytic Institute, Dr. Summers maintains a private practice of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy in Chicago, IL.

Thought provoking, carefully reasoned and useful
By Nora L. Ishibashi
"Self creation" continues the developmental process for Summers' views on psychotherapy and emotional distress. Here he shows, with case examples, how therapists can help people achieve true personal change. Psychotherapy is not about changing habits, but about developing your mind to its fullest potential so that you can have the optimal life possible. Too often, it devolves into problem solving or behavior modification. Summers shows how therapists can help their clients grow into their best possible selves by fostering a true developmental process. This book is extremely accessible, reasonable, and clear.

A valuable source of insight and new applicable techniques written especially for psychotherapists and psychoanalysts
By Midwest Book Review
Clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst Frank Summers presents Self Creation: Psychoanalytic Therapy And The Art Of The Possible, a fresh view on the often difficult relationship between "insight" and "change" in order to bring about transformations in manners of being, relating, and benefiting from therapy. The latter half of Self Creation applies the author's new model of therapeutic action to common clinical syndromes such as depression, harmful narcissism, somatic symptoms, and more. A valuable source of insight and new applicable techniques written especially for psychotherapists and psychoanalysts, also highly recommended for psychology students.

John Neff on Investing, by John Neff

John Neff is a life-long contrarian, proving time-and-again over the past three decades that bucking the system can pay off big. During his illustrious career as a money manager, Neff flew in the face of conventional wisdom by consistently passing over the big growth stocks of the moment, in favor of inexpensive, under performing ones-and he usually won. During his thirty-one years as portfolio manager for Vanguard's Windsor and Gemini II Funds, he beat the market twenty-two times, through every imaginable stock market climate, while posting a 57-fold increase in an initial stake. When Windsor closed its doors to new investors in 1986, it was the largest mutual fund in the United States.
Now retired from mutual fund management, Neff is finally ready to share the investment strategies that earned him international recognition as the "investor's investor", and made him the one to whom other money managers come to manage their money. In John Neff on Investing, Neff delineates, for the first time, the principles of his phenomenally successful low p/e approach to investing, and he describes the strategies, techniques, and investment decisions that earned him a place alongside Warren Buffett and Peter Lynch in the pantheon of modern investment wizards.
Packed with solid advice and guidance for anyone who aspires to using Neff's unique brand of value investing, John Neff on Investing offers invaluable lessons on using price-earnings ratios as a yardstick, to zeroing in on undervalued stocks, interpreting earnings histories and anticipating new market climates. A narrative of Neff's early days-My Road to Windsor-reveals the extraordinary mindset and humble circumstances that shaped his winning investment philosophy. By reproducing excerpts from his personal investment diaries, this book offers a unique opportunity to watch Neff in action over the years. A faithful, quarter-in-quarter-out chronicle of a life on Wall Street, the diaries provide unprecedented insights into the thinking behind some of his best (and worst) investment decisions, while tracing the evolution of his innovative investment style.
The first book to fully reveal the long-heralded investment strategies of a Wall Street genius, John Neff on Investing is must reading for investors, brokers, traders, and bankers of every kind.
JOHN NEFF, until his retirement in 1995, was Senior Vice President and Managing Partner of the Wellington Management Company, the Windsor Fund's investment advisor.
S.L. MINTZ, is New York Bureau Chief of CFO Magazine, a publication of the Economist Group dedicated to the latest financial thinking and how it is being implemented in today's markets. His other books include Beyond Wall Street (Wiley, 1998) and Five Eminent Contrarians.

Amazon.com Review
In the investment-management business, it's best to take bows quickly. Unless, of course, you're John Neff, a living legend, who as manager of Vanguard's Windsor Fund beat the market in 22 out of 31 years. Neff grew Windsor to become the largest mutual fund by combing the bargain basement for quality merchandise and selling as other investors caught on. In John Neff on Investing, he explains how he scoured the daily list of stocks hitting new lows, the "dusty rag and bone shop of the market," to find out-of-favor companies with low price/earnings ratios, those growing faster than seven percent a year, that paid generous dividends. He shows how to distinguish misunderstood and overlooked stocks from those with lackluster prospects.

Shunning the terms value investor and contrarian, he tells us he prefers to be known simply as a "low-p/e investor." "Contrarian investor suggests a stubborn nature," he says, "and there's a thin line between contrarian and being just plain stubborn." Memory in the stock market is notoriously short. "Remember the lessons of the past as they tend to repeat themselves," Neff says. "You cannot become a captive of historical parallel, but you must be a student of history." He takes us back to the early '70s, the "silly season" he calls it, "when investors emphasized a handful of glamour stocks at the expense of the market.... Hypnotized by rising market levels, investors lost sight of fundamentals ... and a dazed and confused public became persuaded that investing is easy." The toughest investment decision is the decision to sell. "Successful stocks don't tell you when to sell," says Neff. "When you feel like bragging, it's probably time to sell." He quotes a French proverb: "Buy on the cannons, sell on the trumpets."

John Neff on Investing begins with an insightful autobiographical sketch, but the marrow of this book is the journey through Neff's investment diary while managing Windsor. He takes us through three turbulent decades and dissects in detail his investment successes and failures. Relying on relentless application of his low-p/e strategy, abetted by attention to fundamentals and a liberal dose of common sense, he repeatedly rode stocks from under- to fair valuation, most often leaving the overvaluation thrill ride to braver souls.

Neff explains his concept of Measured Participation, a sort of asset-allocation strategy for low-p/e investing, and he shows that while difficult in today's high valuation market, constructing a portfolio guided by his methodology is still possible. Anyone with an interest in investing will enjoy learning at the feet of this master. --Scott Harrison

From Publishers Weekly
From 1964 to 1995, Neff managed the large Windsor mutual fund, which consistently beat the stock market's average returns. In this wise and engaging volume, Neff and finance writer Mintz (Five Eminent Contrarians) team up to explain how Windsor did it and how smaller-scale investors might duplicate Neff's success. The result is half financial advice, half autobiography. Early chapters describe Neff's difficult family life in Texas and Michigan, his navy years and his early job in a Cleveland bank. Thereafter, Neff's investment advice alternates with year-by-year analyses of the market and of Windsor's performance. Neff and Mintz together craft clear, forceful prose, studded with personal asides: at the bank in Cleveland, "I was not inclined to play by their rules. Instead of bankers' pinstripes, I wore sport coats." Neff's core precept is simple: buy stocks that look bad to less-careful investors and hang on until their real value is recognized. This means seeking solid companies whose price/earnings ratios look low. "I've never bought a stock," he declares, "unless, in my view, it was on sale." That's not new advice, but Neff's success proves that he knows how to apply it: patience and willpower, he informs us, matter as much as (though not more than) rapt attention to business news and company reports. Bad analysis had almost sunk the Windsor fund when he arrived; Neff's first years there saw "go-go practitioners" and "adrenaline funds" temporarily surpass his returns, then collapse while Windsor persevered. Today's NASDAQ and Internet stock booms, Neff warns, looks like trends from ages past: they, too, will eventually weaken. Readers seeking up-to-the-minute stock tips or get-rich-quick advice may not like the message Neff delivers, but cooler heads seeking to make money over the long haul should enjoy, and benefit from, finding out how Neff invested very, very well. Neff has been called contrarian because he doesn't blindly follow the herd of investors buying the hot, faddish stocksAelectronics in the late 1950s, the go-go stocks of the late 1960s, the net-based stocks of today. Rather, he advocates investing in companies with a solid, intrinsic value, as denoted by a low price-to-earnings ratio and regular dividends. His book both tells the story of his career and explains, in detail, his investing principles. His long-term record of success is enviable (during his tenure, when Windsor posted an average yearly return of 13.7 percent, money managers considered him on a par with Warren Buffett). He writes in lively prose, keeps his chapters short, and uses language that will be familiar to anyone with a passing interest in the market. Public and academic libraries that have a call for investment how-to books should buy this interesting, practical work.APatrick J. Brunet, Western Wisconsin Technical Coll. Lib., La Crosse

Wisdom of the Ages
By Randy N. Myers
Mutual fund managers who can beat the market for a couple of years are a dime a dozen. Mutual fund managers who can beat the market for a couple of decades are practically unheard of. Which is why almost every investor has heard of John Neff. In his 31 years as a bargain-hunting fund manager, he beat the market in 22 of them. By the time he retired a few years ago, a dollar invested in his Windsor Fund in 1964 would have returned $56, versus $22 for the S&P 500.
In JOHN NEFF ON INVESTING, one of the true masters of Wall Street tells us exactly how he compiled this amazing record. With collaborator Steven Mintz, he explains what kinds of stocks he looked for (in a nutshell, low p/e stocks of companies growing earnings in excess of 7% annually, often paying a respectable dividend) and a long list of qualifications concerning just what makes one low p/e stock better than another. (A low p/e company growing too fast is suspect. A dividend yield isn't always a must. Cyclical stocks should offer lower p/e multiples. The list goes on and on.) Just as importantly, Neff shares the wisdom of a lifetime in the investment business, outlining the pitfalls that can trap the unwary investor. (See Chapter 9, CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF A LOW P/E PORTFOLIO.
The meat of Neff's discussion of his investment style is included in the middle third of the book. Armed with this advice, an investor can easily begin to screen the stock market for companies that fit the Neff mold. (MSN MoneyCentral Investor, at [...] offers a powerful and free screening tool. There are many others.)
Elsewhere, Neff devotes the first third of his book to talking about his formative years in the investment business prior to taking over the Windsor Fund. In the final third of the book, he provides a journal describing his investment activities at the helm of the Windsor Fund. He talks about critical buy-sell decisions, why he made them, and how they worked out ... and also describes the ever-changing market environment in which he was making them. (Reading this book is a great reminder that large-cap growth stocks don't always lead the market, as they have for the past five years. As such, it should help investors be better prepared the next time market leadership changes.)
If you had the chance to sit down and talk with John Neff for a few weeks about his career and his investment style, what you would get, though likely not so well structured, would be this book. I'd love to spend those weeks with John Neff. But I wouldn't give up the chance to have read this book, either. Few investors have achieved more than Neff, and his story deserves a place on any investor's reading list. ###

Interesting but expected better
By Doug Smith
I was looking forward to reading this book to provide some help in managing my mostly value oriented stock portfolio but was disappointed. The middle of the book (Chapt. 7) provides some useful tools and ideas on screening for value stocks but Part Three which chronicles Mr. Neff's thirty one year management of Windsor confirms that his strategies are strictly for 60 hour a week, eat, breath and die the stock market professionals. Application of ideas by Peter Lynch from "One Up on Wall Street" and "Beating the Street" are a piece of cake compared to this. Mr Neff's strategy appears to involve constant combing of the stock market universe to identify stocks reaching their absolute lowest PE ratio, buying, then holding until they reach "fair value" which sometimes can occur relatively quickly. Entire positions are then eliminated to be replaced by new stocks reaching their lowest PE ratio. Almost perfect market timing of both the buy and sell sides of his strategy look to have been a crucial part of Mr. Neff's success at Windsor. To Mr. Neff's credit, he does not claim that his strategies can be well adopted by the average investor as Mr. Lynch does. We are then left with a book that serves more as a vehicle for Mr. Neff to point with pride to his record at Windsor and a history of his early personal life.
Mr. Neff's idea of "inflection points" in the market is useful and in Chapt. 14 "Deja Vu" where he covers the current market he appears to predict the recent correction in NASDAQ and internet stocks. The book is unusually silent on 1994-95, the last two years of his management when Windsor underperformed the S&P 500 although earlier periods of underperformance are well covered. The book although published in 1999 is to no surprise silent on the abysmal underperformance of Windsor from 95-99 by Mr. Neff's disciple Mr. Freeman although Mr. Freeman is highly praised in the book. The book is an interesting narrative on management of a mutual fund and contains some useful information on the market and stock selection but not nearly as helpful as hoped for.

Nitty Gritty of Value Investing
By John Thackray
There are thousands of books that give investment advice: "buy this", "sell that", etc. John Neff reveals how a successful contratian investor actually does the homework, the analysis, and makes and sticks to his judgements. There are no pat formulas here, but wonderful display of a great financial reasoner doing his stuff in all kinds of market conditions. Neff's returns from 1964 to 1995 were double the S&P's because of his way of interpreting the economic scene and his determination to find values where others saw dreck. His story is described in fast-paced language and a wry sense of humor. Some people might argue that today's market conditions are unique, so what's the point of dredging up and discussing the market of 10 and 15 years ago. And okay "value investing" is not very fashionable, since recent value funds have under-performed against the averages. But that is precisely the kind of opportunity that Neff just loved to wade into, when value stocks were a bargain. After the current technology and IPO frenzy has subsided, the Neff approach will be what investors turn to. This is not a how-to book: better it turns on a light inside the mind of one of the few professional investors to beat the market over many decades.

Too high level to be practical
    By Alejandro Castillo
The book is extremely high level to be practical or useful. Take the tunneling chapter for example, in the tunneling chapter, tunneling is only explained. No methods or ideas are ever brought up as to how to detect it or investigate it.

The some sections do have tools , but even these sections aren't useful. The author painfully does a step by step process that literally just acts as filler for the book as it fills it with screenshots. I mean who hasn't gone through a click click next next installer?

If you are a manager who has just transitioned to the incident response side and want to get your hands wet to understand what your employees are doing this book is for you! For everyone else trying to actually solve this problem on a network with more than one PC and needs a deeper understanding of the subject ... This book may not be for you.

A Book That Gets Me Excited to Try a Paleo Diet
    By Amanda Dorough
Wow, this book is really cool. I've been considering trying out a Paleo diet for years because of the health benefits but I never quite understood how it worked. I always thought I would be very limited on what I could eat and would get bored with it very easily. This book helped me both understand Paleo (the first third is all background info) and showed my that there are some pretty awesome things you can do with the allowed ingredients. One recipe that blew my mind was "Cauliflower Rice." While it's not the main dish by any means, I had never even considered taking cauliflower to a cheese grater and using it in a different form. Beyond that, the level creativity exhibited in all the recipes in this book is phenomenal and it gets me actually excited to try them out. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone currently practicing paleo and looking for new exciting ideas as well as anyone like me who has considered paleo but has been afraid to give it a try.

*I received this product complimentary in exchange for my honest opinion.

If you are looking to make a lifestyle change and start a Paleo diet, this is the book to read.
    By Domesticvixen
If you are thinking this is a typical diet book, it is not !! Paleo isn't really a diet per se I say its a lifestyle change that you are willing to commit. You have to be willing to commit to give up processed meats, you will have to give up refined sugar. One of the benefits of going Paleo is how healthy you will be eating and how much you will feel better. One of the biggest issues I have had is lack of energy. Following a Paleo diet will help you feel more energetic and you can sometimes see physical signs of healthy eating such as clear skin and way more energy and just feeling well overall.
One of my major dilemmas is find good recipes, worry not because this book has great recipes and it includes beautiful pictures which I love. I am a very visual person and being able to see what my food is supposed to look like helps me out so much. I love that the recipes are easy to follow and I absolutely love the authors enthusiasm through out the book.

Great for a beginner and very informative read
    By Raina Smith
I personally have never heard of the Paleo diet. This was something a lot different to me and my family. I like trying new things so I gave it a chance.

This book is definitely a great introduction to the Paleo diet. It starts our telling you alot about Paleo eating. Then it has a well written weekly food calendar which is useful. Finally it comes with a weekly grocery list. It really like how it goes over how we shouldn't eat processed foods, how bad they are and the importance of organic foods. This book is just full of valuable information that was useful to me. Great for the beginners like myself. I like how it has 28 days worth of recipes it's almost a full month of different meals to try. On the front it said 4 weeks, 5 ingredients, 130 recipes. Though know not every recipe is a handful of ingredients. The recipes are easy to read and follow. Some are even really simple. It also has snacks for those cravings that happen between meals. These recipes do require ingredients that maybe you already have in your cabinets. I however used the grocery list that was provided - guess I'm just not like other people.

Overall; This is a great beginner book for the Paleo lifestyle. It lacked photos and that's something that I usually use to draw me into trying the meals. However it was a very informative read.

Tortilla Flat (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics), by John Steinbeck

"Steinbeck is an artists; and he tells the stories of these lovable thieves and adulterers with a gentle and poetic purity of heart and of prose."—New York Herald Tribune

Adopting the structure and themes of the Arthurian legend, John Steinbeck created a “Camelot” on a shabby hillside above the town of Monterey, California, and peopled it with a colorful band of knights. At the center of the tale is Danny, whose house, like Arthur’s castle, becomes a gathering place for men looking for adventure, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging—men who fiercely resist the corrupting tide of honest toil and civil rectitude.

As Nobel Prize winner Steinbeck chronicles their deeds—their multiple lovers, their wonderful brawls, their Rabelaisian wine-drinking—he spins a tale as compelling and ultimately as touched by sorrow as the famous legends of the Round Table, which inspired him. This edition features an introduction by Thomas Fensch.

John Steinbeck knew and understood America and Americans better than any other writer of the twentieth century. (The Dallas Morning News) A man whose work was equal to the vast social themes that drove him. (Don DeLillo)"

    About the Author

John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel,Cup of Gold(1929).

After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books,The Pastures of Heaven(1932) andTo a God Unknown(1933), and worked on short stories later collected inThe Long Valley(1938). Popular success and financial security came only withTortilla Flat(1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class:In Dubious Battle(1936),Of Mice and Men(1937), and the book considered by many his finest,The Grapes of Wrath(1939).The Grapes of Wrathwon both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.

Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker withThe Forgotten Village(1941) and a serious student of marine biology withSea of Cortez(1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-noveletteThe Moon is Down(1942).Cannery Row(1945),The Wayward Bus(1948), another experimental drama,Burning Bright(1950), andThe Log from the Sea of Cortez(1951) preceded publication of the monumentalEast of Eden(1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history.

The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books includeSweet Thursday(1954),The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication(1957),Once There Was a War(1958),The Winter of Our Discontent(1961),Travels with Charley in Search of America(1962),America and Americans(1966), and the posthumously publishedJournal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters(1969),Viva Zapata!(1975),The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights(1976), andWorking Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath(1989).

Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.

John McDonough's reading of this marvelous Steinbeck novel is not without its flaws, but they don't much diminish the charm of the performance. Tortilla Flat follows the exploits of Danny and his paisano friends, who live in squalid poverty and blissful idleness near Monterey, California. McDonough does not overact, and his gentle touch is well suited to the story. His accents and voices, however, are strangely inconsistent, as if he eventually tires of giving each character his own. Nonetheless, McDonough makes it work by bringing out the novel's humor and poignancy in all the right places. D.B. AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright AudioFile, Portland, Maine

    An Arthurian Marvel
    By David A. Wend
Tortilla Flat was an actual place in Carmel that John Steinbeck placed in Monterey. He took some stories about the paisanos (a mixture of Spanish, Indian, Mexican and Caucasian bloods) that lived in this marginal place consisting of shacks and, using the style of the Arthurian legends, spun these tales about Danny and his friends. They are meant to be humorous and serious at times, and the characters are larger than life. Certainly, no one could live as Danny, Pilon, Jesus Marie, Big Joe Portagee and the Pirate, consuming wine by the gallon, eating whatever they can steal and taking up and whoring with any woman they want, but this is hardly the point. The tales have an epic proportion to them like Malory's knights of yore but from the vantagepoint of the New World. This makes Tortilla Flat an entertaining and cleverly written book.
Danny is the central character of the book and the anchor that holds his group of friends together. They may be vagabonds but they have a moral code. An example: the Pirate lives with five dogs in a chicken coop. He takes some kindling wood into town each day and receives a quarter for it. He does not spend the money but hoards it. The paisanos estimate it to be $100 and think of stealing it, but are unable to follow the Pirate to where he has hidden the money. To get around this problem they invite the Pirate to live with him and try to discover the whereabouts of the money by suggesting it could be stolen quite easily. The Pirate eventually brings the money to the paisanos and discloses why he is saving it: the money is to fulfill a promise made to St. Francis to present a golden candlestick to a church in the saints honor. Why? Because the saint cured an illness one of his dogs had. Once the paisanos know the money is for a religious purpose they guard it diligently. The chapter in Tortilla Flat when the Pirate's vow is fulfilled is one of the most beautiful and memorable in the book.
This is a beautifully written book filled with humor and pathos. Mr. Steinbeck was criticized in writing this book by some readers who could not enter into the spirit of the book thinking he was glorifying the free and easy lives of Danny and company. This was not his intention; he was only telling stories inspired by the free spirits of the paisanos. Unfortunately for us, this criticism was bitter and Mr. Steinbeck never undertook such a book again. It is our loss that he could not give us another Tortilla Flat.

    Wine, women, song and tears
    By jmh
I highly recommended this short novel but I would not do so for everyone. First of all, you must appreciate the novel being written in 1935 and the language spoken by the characters reflect that time period, rightly so. It only takes a short while to adapt and I found the story moving along at a nice pace as the personalities began to assume colorful portrayals.
Steinbeck presents a group of men, or paisanos living in Monterey, California after the first World War. These are poor men, not especially motivated to work for a living and have a thirsty, never ending longing for wine. They circle around Danny, the fortunate one in the group, who inherited 2 small houses from his grandfather. Having no steady job, it makes sense to him to "rent" to his buddies. His buddies don't have jobs or revenue, either, so the compensation that takes place is in the form of companionship and the collective sharing of all foods begged from the back doors of groceries and restaurants. The hawking of whatever goods they come upon that can be bartered for the prized gallon of wine serves to be their highest priority. While seemingly desperate and pathetic, these men go to no end to rationalize their predicaments, twist truths and events to be self-serving and ultimately rewarding their endeavors by securing enough wine to satisfy them all. This can be quite a challenge, and the lengths they go to to fulfill their thirsty desires are hilarious. That the reader finds love and goodness in these fellows is reflected by the skill of John Steinbeck's writing.
The book is a quick read and it was not long before I became fond and wiped away a few tears of sorrow and joy for each of them and the circumstances these men find themselves. The practise of their Catholic religion is random; they use it when they need it, commit small crimes in the name of it and dismiss the many restrictive "Thou shall not's" when seized in the throes of passion or inebriation. A greater sense of loyalty knits these men to each other. While women acquaintances come and go, the paisanos rely on each other and faithfully commit to one another. In spite of the inevitable drunken fights and arguments, the following morning beckons another day. All the sins of the previous day are (literally) forgotten and forgiven. In the dawn of the new day anything is possible, and the adventures these men get themselves into is pure comic entertainment.

    Old recipe, ethnic infusion.
    By W.U.
If there was ever a writer that understood how people's fates were inextricably tied to their land, it was Steinbeck. The familiar setting of Monterrey county introduces us to a new cast of characters, pulled together by the gravity of their birthplace. Early on, one gets that feeling that the misadventures in which Danny and his friends partake, could take place in Tortilla Flat, and nowhere else.

Like Mallory’s story of King Arthur and the knights of the round table, Tortilla Flat has its heroes, quests, damsels, and holy grail. That is the original recipe. Add beans, paisanos, “lively” women, and a whole lot of wine. Simmer and reduce. The result is a rich, yet simple and savory tale; literary comfort food for those who have visited this land before through Steinbeck’s prose. Those that long for it.

Who knew that this one valley in California would be the well to spring forth the tragic drama of the ‘Grapes of Wrath’, the biblical struggle of ‘East of Eden’, the love and friendship of ‘Cannery Row’, the Arthurian romance of ‘Tortilla’ and…well, the man himself.

And no, I am not putting the ‘cart before the horse’. These tales, these elemental forces were there long before Steinbeck allowed his artistic sensibilities to be threaded by them. And will continue to roam this land, perhaps in different finery, but eternal all the same.

Carnival time in The Rover is a period when prohibitions are temporarily removed, privileges and rank suspended, and women - from convent girls to courtesans - take the initiative. Featuring multiple plot lines, which deal with the adventures of a group of love-struck Englishmen in Naples, Aphra Behn's play explores issues of love, trickery and deception, forced marriage, male power, fidelity, and the excesses of sexual passion. Hers is a male-dominated society, but one with a clear-sighted portrayal of the female predicament.

The play is widely taught on A Level courses as well as on undergraduate literature and women's writing courses. This new edition contains a completely new introduction, and takes into account important criticism from the past decade, as well as a new understanding of the nature of theatre in Behn's time, and the significance of her contribution to English drama.

    The Rover
    By louise lowe
Virginia Woolf said that all women together should let flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn - for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds - well, within the Rover, her sexual politics are personified through the character of Angelica Bianca : and it makes for an intriguing read! Brandishing swords, embracing rape and finding their own individual identities in a society that veiwed women as second class subject, this remained the most frequently performed play right up until 1800!

This book edited by Herbert Kessler for a popular audience, distills Demus's lifelong study of San Marco. It chronicles each stage in the gestation of the beloved church-the handiwork of Greek artists and the contributions of local mosaicists from the eleventh to the thirteenth century and the misguided attempts to refashion and repair it after the fifteenth century.

excellent photo prints, very well organized, insightful views
    By designered@earthlink.net
The author organizes his thoughts of the Venetian mosaics on a room by room basis. Insightful comparisons are made with other eras of mosaic cultures. An excellent book for students of mosaic art who want to study this particular, worthy genre.
Perhaps the book's strongest appeal is the choice of color plates (photographs) the author chose to include in this book. All color plates are reproduced in a stunning high qualty for the price you pay. The number of color plates, however, are somewhat limited and leave you hungry for more. Perhaps that's caused by the subject matter. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this purchase.
