Review
"This exquisite book offers guidance to us all."
— Alice Walker
"This is the real article, brought to us by streetwise bodhisattva, Anne Herbert, who authored the phrase you see on walls and bumperstickers, and Margaret Pavel, word wizard, systems thinker and global therapist, along with Dharma artist Mayumi Oda, whose wondrous frogs remind us that this time we awaken with all beings. Good things come in small packages. About as long as the Heart Sutra, it distills all we need to know right now in order to let our lives count in building a sustainable world."
— Joanna Macy
“Wow! This book is amazing. The message is so important and relevant! I believe that we all have the power! I love the way this book sends this message of goodness to children. Children are the future and this book conveys HOPE! It is rich in language, thought provoking and positive.”
—Marla Conn, Common Core Curriculum Standards assessment specialist

Anne Herbert (born 1952) is an American writer and a past assistant editor of CoEvolution Quarterly, a precursor to the Whole Earth Review. She is perhaps best known for being the person who coined the phrases, "Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty." and "Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries."
An article in the December 1991 issue of Glamour about the history of the "random kindness" phrase described Herbert as "tall, blonde, and forty" and as living in Marin County, California.
Having known Anne Herbert in the 80s, Kevin Kelly wrote (in 2012) about her writing: “…it was telegraphic, lyrical, abbreviated, evocative, extremely personal and mystical. She wrote in short bursts. Like proverbs from a secret bible…It was not like any writing I had encountered… She was decades ahead of her time…”
Syndicated columnist Sally Schneider notes that Herbert's writing is "often like haiku (without the constraints): tiny meditations that caste a unique light on everyday things."

wonderful

This was a wonderful, spectacular book with beautiful illustrations and a wonderful message. with simplistic yet poetic words and a perfect theme, you cant go wrong with this book. Definitely one of the first books I will expose my children to. It depicts beauty, exposes the horrors of violence, and shows children how they can be leaders. Truly an amazing book.

A Classic, perfect gift for self or others
By Richard Page
Prophetic, hard hitting, incisive. Inspired by the life and work of the co-authors, I am no less enchanted by their book every time I read it. I cannot keep it on the shelf, it is my favorite book to share with people I want to reach from activists and opinion leaders to close friends and colleagues. Disarming in its beauty, devastating in its indictment of our current historical situation - buy this book if you want to Occupy your life, your community, our world with renewed vitality and conviction, a manifesto for our age.

A Transcendent Beauty is Born
By Owl
World-renown artist Mayumi Oda has illustrated the text by Margaret Pavel and Anne Herbert twice: in 1979 and in 2014. The 1979 edition is in red and black, the pages folding out like a scroll. If you can find this edition, now out of print, cherish it!
The 2014 edition of "Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty" was begun in 2011 when Mayumi was in Japan, working with a traditional scroll maker and is based on the 12th century scroll, "Birds and Animals Frolicking." My review describes the 2014 edition. Readers will need to be mindful of which edition they are purchasing.
The Story: Anne Herbert was the originator of the now widely quoted saying, "Practice Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty" inspiring the story by writer Margaret Paloma Pavel. The story describes how violence grows from senseless acts that begin to make the senseless whole of terrible wars, while harmony grows from senseless acts of kindness that can make a whole of environmental & human caring. Pavel emphasizes that we are powerful when we act: "the steps we take now decide what kind of earth that will be."
Mayumi Oda's vision brings to heart-breaking life the path where bunnies advance with rifles and and froglets are drenched in the deadly black rain that fell after Hiroshima. Her graceful art creates the path where cat, snake, monkey, rabbit, frogs, elephants, foxes, deer, and chipmunks feast, dance, and together grow the flowers, trees, and foods by which all are nourished.
The colors leap off these pages, the details deepen the meaning as the reader notices (for example), the snake joining the joyful dance is a rattlesnake and the skeleton dome behind the flames of senseless violence is that of Hiroshima. This 2014 edition is graced not only by Mayumi Oda's sure artistry but also a by a foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
A beautiful gift for children, for those loving Mayumi Oda's art, and in thanks to those whose lives exemplify random acts of kindness. Most highly recommended.
